BTS Hung Out With H.E.R. At Dave & Busters After Their White House Visit

It’s been a busy week for the Bangtan Boys as they visited the White House to close out Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. The visit with Joe Biden was to discuss the rise of anti-Asian hate in the US and the importance of Asian representation in business, media, politics, and pop culture. And while the visit drew some predictable derision from conservative circles, BTS themselves were far too busy doing more important things to notice — things like taking R&B star and fellow Asian heritage representer H.E.R. on a group outing to Dave & Busters.

J-Hope caught much of the fun on his Instagram Story, which found the group shooting hoops — H.E.R. and Jungkook tied, according to the R&B star’s own Instagram Story — and Jungkook giving H.E.R. some friendly advice on protecting her wrist on the arcade’s boxing machine. It looks like everybody had a blast, even with the language barrier.

The outing was also likely a chance for H.E.R. to get a much-needed break from her day job opening for Coldplay on their Music Of The Spheres Tour. Considering how much effort she puts into her live performances — playing multiple instruments while belting out virtuoso vocals on songs like “We Made It” — the chance to relax and unwind appears to have been much appreciated. Having great company is just icing on the cake.

Young Dolph’s Alleged Killers’ Court Date Was Moved After New Evidence Was Discovered

Memphis’ FOX13 News reports that the court date for Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith, the two men accused of killing Young Dolph, has been moved per their attorneys’ request. Both men appeared in court on Friday, May 27, where their attorneys requested a reset to July 1 due to some new discovery that they say will be vital to the judge setting Smith’s bond. July 1 will also be Smith’s new bond hearing.

Smith’s attorney, Michael Scholl, said, “We are receiving more information and I want to take a look at it. One of the factors that go into the bond is the likelihood of conviction. Other factors are [whether the accused is a] flight risk.”

Johnson was identified by police as a suspect in the case around two months after Dolph was shot to death outside a local Memphis bakery, Makeda’s cookies. A warrant for Johnson’s arrest was issued in January and he was arrested shortly thereafter in Indiana.

Meanwhile, Smith was identified and arrested when the car used in the murder was linked to another shooting in the immediate aftermath of Dolph’s death. A third suspect, Shundale Barnett, was arrested in January but was mistakenly released, while two other men, Devin Burns and Joshua Taylor, were also named as persons of interest in the case.

NYC’s Governors Ball Is Still Growing Alongside An Ever-Changing City

While the average festival attendee might not recognize the names of Jordan Wolowitz, Tom Russell, and Yoni Reisman, they have proven to be pivotal to New York City’s history. After founding the production company Founders Entertainment as 20-somethings with an immense passion for live music, they also crafted the idea to host a music festival on Governors Island in 2011.

The sounds of the city were still drawn to the Indie Sleaze movement, and so, the festival’s single-day lineup reflected that — with electronic artists Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, and Empire OF The Sun headlining that year. That decision to cater to a generation of fellow early adults paid off immensely, as the aptly-titled Governors Ball’s debut drew the highest attendance for any event on Governors Island. “As many area festival attempts often fall flat due to poor execution, the Governors Ball was a pleasant exception to the rule, leaving us looking forward to its return next year,” Flavorwire wrote about the festival.

Building upon their success, the founders expanded Governors Ball to a two-day festival the following year, moving the location to Randall’s Island to better accommodate the growth — which included popular city food vendors (Luke’s Lobster, Wafels & Dinges) and a variety of outdoor games. Beck, Kid Cudi, Passion Pit, and Modest Mouse were on 2012’s top billing.

Despite the momentum, the third year was not a charm for Governors Ball, as disaster struck in the form of Tropical Storm Andrea on day one — the start of weather that would prove to be a common struggle for the founders in years to come. By 9 pm, the entire festival was canceled, with local paper Gothamist publishing a slideshow of the conditions. Crowds in colorful ponchos dispersed, just trying to avoid being drenched in mud.

“It was a heck of a storm: a lot of rain and high winds. When you have 40,000 people on your festival site, which is grass, and you have five to six inches of water descend upon that site within an eight-hour period, the result is a field of mud,” Russell told INC about that year. “There’s not much you can really do to combat that. We laid down plywood, sand, and landscaper’s hay, but everything just sank. Around 8 p.m. on Friday, when we started getting 40 mph wind gusts, we knew we had to cut the show.”

Throughout the years, weather complications have continued to be a common theme affecting Governors Ball. In 2019, Sunday attendees were stuck on Randall’s Island, until an 8:30 pm announcement officially canceled The Strokes and SZA’s nighttime performances. With severe thunderstorms, ticket buyers walked back across the RFK bridge to get home.

Still, Governors Ball planned to get back to normal. The original 2020 lineup continued the cross-generational appeal by featuring Tame Impala, Missy Elliott, Flume, and Vampire Weekend as headliners; it was eventually canceled due to the pandemic. After taking a-year-and-a-half hiatus until returning in September 2021, much like the rest of the world, the festival made some major changes. As for whether these will prove for better or for worse is to be determined.

Upon their return, Governors Ball announced they would be moving the permanent location to Citi Field — with stages set up just outside of the Mets stadium. Last year marked my first time attending the festival, so it’s difficult to compare to past locations. However, crowd control seemed to be a significant issue. Given the stages are spaced quite closely together, a lot of the audiences blended into one giant crowd, with very minimal lamp posts or clear exit signs. About six months later and in the wake of Astroworld, it seems to be a potential safety issue.

Still, Governors Ball has the opportunity to smooth out any roadblocks for their second year at Citi Field. At the very least, they have an all-star lineup — one that leans heavily into aiming for a younger demographic instead of keeping one headliner your Gen X mother might recognize.

Saturday’s headliner, Halsey, is one of the most exciting artists on the bill. They sought out their musical heroes — Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails — to eventually began crafting an industrial-inspired pop record together. The result was their cinematic fourth studio album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. While the writing process began before Halsey’s pregnancy (and first child), it conceptually began to wrap around all the various aspects of motherhood.

Rapper J. Cole will close out the festival as Sunday’s headlining performer. Last year, he released his Grammy-nominated sixth album, The Off-Season. “The Off-Season symbolizes the work that it takes to get to the highest height,” he told Slam magazine last year. “The Off-Season represents the many hours and months and years it took to get to top form. Just like in basketball, what you see him do in the court, that shit was worked on in the summertime.”

Hip-hop continues to play a heavy part in Governors Ball’s main acts: Friday headliner Kid Cudi, Jack Harlow, British MC Skepta, Coi Leray, Roddy Ricch, and many more. As a fun surprise, basketball player Shaquille O’Neal is scheduled to perform on Saturday under the stage name DJ Diesel.

For those looking for rising indie acts, Samia is one of the solo artists not to miss. The singer-songwriter released her first full-length record, The Baby, in 2020. She has since followed that with a handful of equally strong singles, from the somber, piano-driven “Desperado” to capturing feelings of love, and acceptance on “As You Are.” Last year, Samia also teamed up with a handful of prominent indie artists to reimagine songs from her debut album, including Bartees Strange, Christian Lee Hutson, Palehound, and many more.

The past year has also been a record-breaking one for Michelle Zauner, who fronts the Philly-based indie band, Japanese Breakfast. Between releasing a Grammy-nominated album, Jubilee, and becoming a New York Times bestselling author with her debut memoir, Crying In H Mart, Zauner has continuously distinguished herself as a talented artist — no matter what the medium is.

In all, Governors Ball has the chance to redefine itself for this new decade, evolving as necessary, and representing its city as the flagship festival offering.

Rae Sremmurd Teases ‘Sremm4Life,’ Their Upcoming Fourth Album: ‘Bout To Get A Dose Of This Sremmy’

It’s been quite a while since Rae Sremmurd gave the world a full body of work. To find that, you’d have to go back to 2018 when the rap duo composed of Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi released their third album SR3MM. The project arrived as a triple-disc with one side being a 9-track Rae Sremmurd release, and the remaining two discs being 9-track solo efforts from Swae and Slim. The rappers have shared some tidbits about their fourth album over the years, but music has yet to arrive from it. All of that could change soon as they teased the project once again from their social media accounts.

The rap duo posted an image of the number four of fire to the Rae Sremmurd Twitter page with the caption, “SREMM4LIFE.” In a second tweet that Swae Lee shared from his personal account, he added, “Bout to get a dose of this Sremmy.” Slim Jxmmi also chimed in with his own tweet, writing, “Time for that 4 foe four for phor.” All of the aforementioned posts seemingly confirm that new music from the project should arrive much sooner than later.

In an interview with Essence back in 2019, Rae Sremmurd seemingly confirmed that their upcoming fourth album would be set up like 2018’s SR3MM. For what it’s worth, that interview was more than three years ago, so it remains to be seen if that is still the plan for the duo.

Nicki Minaj Is The New Creative Director Of Maxim

Nicki Minaj is busy, but she’s about to get busier as the new creative director of Maxim. The rapper has entered a multi-year, global partnership with MaximBet and will work with them on “merchandise, parties, partnerships, fan experiences and branding all designed to bring together entertainment, sports, celebrity and betting,” as per the website’s statement.

It also adds: “Minaj, who categorically disrupted the male-dominated industry of rap music, is doing the same with sports betting by bringing her style and ethos to MaximBet to illustrate the lifestyle components of the brand while vastly broadening its audience, including inviting more women into the fold.”

Minaj has many opinions that she’s often open about; she recently took to Twitter to discuss her thoughts on menswear. She had lots of advice that entertained her fans. If men wanted to be more attractive, she encouraged them to “wear gray sweatpants. Everyday. Well if they want some ass that day. With crispy sneakers.” However, there’s a downside, as well. The rapper warned, “If I see one scuff ima put my p*ssy back in the drawer.” She also mentioned light blue jeans, although it’s unclear which category those fall into: “Getting ass” or “back in the drawer.”

Pharrell Announces A New Collaboration With Tyler The Creator And 21 Savage

In the next few weeks, Pharrell will kick off the second edition of his Something In The Water music festival. He first debuted the showcase back in 2019 in his hometown of Virginia Beach, and while he intended to hold it again in the years that followed, some outside forces caused a second edition to be delayed until this year. The COVID pandemic forced cancellations in 2020 and 2021, and towards the end of the latter year, he announced that the festival would no longer be held in Virginia Beach due to the city’s “toxic energy” following their response to his cousin’s murder by a police officer.

Months later, Pharrell announced Something In The Water would bring its warm energy to Washington DC, and now, it appears that he may also perform a new song for the first time there. That’s because just a week before the festival kicks off, Pharrell will release “Cash In Cash Out,” his upcoming collaboration with Tyler the Creator and 21 Savage. The song is set to arrive on June 10 and Pharrell shared the news about it in an announcement that also provided a pre-save link for fans. The post also comes complete with artwork that presents animated versions of Pharrell, Tyler the Creator, and 21 Savage.

Pharrell’s announcement comes after Tyler won a Grammy for Best Rap Album for Call Me If You Get Lost earlier this year. As for 21 Savage, it comes after he brought his talents to the Coachella stage last month.

Lil Nas X Is Teaming Up With M&M’s For A Sweet Partnership That Promises Treats For Fans

Lil Nas X has had a few unique collaborations in his career, especially those that take place outside of music. He partnered with MSCHF for their “Satan Shoes” collaboration, which was a customized Nike Air Max 97, and that resulted in a lawsuit from Nike which the two sides later settled. He teamed up with Maury for a fictional episode that continued the storyline from his “That’s What I Want” video. There’s also Lil Nas’ upcoming possible collaboration with the Teletubbies. His trend of these types of collaborations will stay alive thanks to the announcement of his partnership with M&M’s.

Together, Lil Nas and M&M’s aim to use the power of “music, art & entertainment” to bring fans together and build connections through initiatives that they will debut later this year. “M&M’s is iconic and I’m a huge fan of the brand,” Lil Nas X said about the partnership in a statement. “I’m excited to work with them on some really cool projects this year that are as colorful as they are.”

Allison Miazga-Bedrick, Mars Wrigley’s Senior Brand Director, said the partnership aligns with M&M’s commitment to “inspiring moments of connection and fun by encouraging a deeper sense of belonging.” Miazga-Bedrick added, “Music is one of the most powerful tools to bring people together. Santana, who only started rapping professionally in 2019 after working as a makeup artist for City Girls, has already seen his star rise tremendously as a result of TikTok-favorite singles like “Walk,” “Material Girl,” and “Shisha,” but his next single, “Booty,” has the potential to be his biggest yet for three reasons.

Reason number one: Santana teased the single on TikTok and Twitter just hours ago, and he’s already trending, with fans calling “Booty” the song of the summer despite only having 15 seconds to go on. That’s influence, people.

Reason number two: Booty samples one of the biggest hits in one of the most storied discographies in the recording industry. It’s not subtle either; the sample of Beyonce’s breakthrough solo single “Crazy In Love” blares out of an unseen speaker in Santana’s teaser as he twerks and pops to the particularly sticky hook.

Reason number three: There’s a mystery guest, and Santana is at that stage in his career where it could be someone huge. His hiding the name makes it all the more likely since it implies it’s someone he hasn’t worked with already, who you might not expect him to work with, but who will totally make sense when you find out who it is. There’s also that collaboration that Lil Nas X teased a few months ago…

Jaylen Brown Is Reportedly Joining Kanye West’s Donda Sports

Jaylen Brown is on his way to the first NBA Finals of his career, as the Celtics finally broke through the Eastern Conference Finals ceiling on their fourth visit in the six years Brown has been on the roster, as he has developed into the Celtics second star alongside Jayson Tatum.

The former No. 3 overall pick has steadily improved over the course of his career and is now among the best two-way wings in the NBA, and as he prepares for an increased profile off of a Finals run, he’s making an off-court move to capitalize. TMZ reports Brown has signed with Kanye West’s Donda Sports, although it’s not abundantly clear what the exact relationship will be between the budding agency and the NBA star. Brown is currently on the second year of a four-year, $106 million deal with the Celtics that was negotiated by agent Jason Glushon.

Brown joins Aaron Donald with Donda Sports, as the NFL star announced his partnership with the agency this week — although he noted it was a partnership focused on off the field endorsements and ventures. Whether Brown is leaving Glushon Sports Management in total for Donda Sports or if he is joining them, like Donald, for off-field management remains to be seen, but either way it’s clear he’s getting ready to expand his brand with a new agency.
