KennyHoopla Rips His Performance Of The Pop-Punk Hit ‘Estella’ For ‘UPROXX Sessions’

Anyone with eyes on the musical landscape in 2021 may have noticed a familiar sound beginning to re-emerge from the nostalgic era of the 2000s: Pop-punk is officially back. As artists like MGK, Olivia Rodrigo, and Willow Smith embrace the once-dormant genre, its face is also starting to change thanks to newcomers such as KennyHoopla, who stopped by Uproxx Studios to perform his 2020 Travis Barker-produced standout “Estella” for this week’s episode of UPROXX Sessions.

Kenny Hoopla, who hails from Cleveland, OH, was part of the 2016 wave of breakout artists who built massive followings on SoundCloud. He released his major-label debut EP How Will I Rest In Peace If I’m Buried By A Highway? in 2020, following up with Survivors Guilt: The Mixtape in collaboration with Barker earlier this month, led by the single “Hollywood Sucks.” Later this year, he’s billed to tour both the US and the UK with MGK and Yungblud, respectively.

DDG Sings A ‘Hood Melody’ In His Melancholy New Video

A day after featuring on XXL‘s 2021 Freshman list, DDG releases the latest single from his Die 4 Respect mixtape with hitmaking producer OG Parker. “Hood Melody,” which features a rattling, melancholy beat and contemplative, observational lyrics from the Pontiac native, backgrounds a video that finds DDG obsessing over all of the violent ends he can meet.

Although the song features a guest verse from perpetually troubled Baton Rouge rapper Youngboy Never Broke Again, the man himself was not available for the video shoot as he’s currently in custody after being arrested for felony firearm possession in Los Angeles in March. Youngboy was denied bail after prosecutors successfully argued that he would be a danger to the community and a flight risk. He was previously arrested on similar charges in his native Louisiana and has been connected with a fatal shooting in Miami in 2019, as well as avoiding prison time for kidnapping and aggravated assault after being caught on camera attacking his then-girlfriend at a hotel in Georgia.

DDG, on the other hand, has a bright future ahead of him thanks to appearances with Dame D.O.L.L.A. on the NBA star’s “Stuntin On You‘ video and the extended rollout of the Die 4 Respect mixtape, which included the Coi Leray-featuring “Impatient” video.

HER Strives For Independence On The Loungy Single ‘My Own’

Four-time Grammy Award-winning singer HER is just days away from the release of her highly anticipated album Back Of My Mind. The 21-track effort features collaborations with the likes of Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Baby, and DJ Khaled, but with her new single “My Own,” HER exemplifies her powerful solo songwriting.

The subdued beat on “My Own” gives HER the chance to showcase her emotive vocals. A reverberating bass underscores her sultry delivery as HER sings of the difficulty of getting over an ex while also recognizing the self growth that inevitably comes with it.

Just ahead of the new song’s release, HER sat down for a cover interview with Variety, where she talked about how she incorporated elements of rock into the album’s sound:

“I didn’t wanna pull out all my tricks at once. My first few [releases] were just a small piece of who I am musically, and it was a matter of time before I could reveal others. I’ve always been a huge fan of Coldplay and Led Zeppelin and Radiohead and alternative and rock and blues, but it wasn’t until this album that I started digging into those other elements and bringing them to R&B.”

Listen to “My Own” above and check out HER’s full conversation with Variety here.

Back Of My Mind is out 6/18 via MBK Entertainment/RCA Records. Pre-order it here.

Polo G Doesn’t Care About “Hall Of Fame” Sales Projections

This past Friday, Hip-Hop fans were treated to two huge album releases, as Polo G and Migos unleashed Hall of Fame and Culture III, respectively. Days after the arrival of the two long-awaited albums, early sales projections started rolling out, with Polo G predicted to move about 165K-175K album-equivalent units and Migos slated to push about 125K-135K on their end.

As this week has progressed, however, what started off as a landslide victory for Polo G quickly turned into somewhat of a sales battle between the sensational “Rapstar” artist and the beloved Atlanta rap trio, as Polo G’s sales projections experienced a massive dip in about 40,000 album-equivalent units. Now, in a newly released Instagram Live interview with Elliot Wilson, Polo G talks about his perspective on album sales.

During the interview, Elliot Wilson prefaces his question by remarking on how Polo G is practically in a position to compete with himself considering his newly released album will be going head to head with Culture III, on which he makes a guest appearance. Wilson then asks Polo G, “I’m sure you want to be number one. How competitive are you when it comes to stuff like that?”

Surprisingly, Polo G reveals that his focus is never on the numbers. “I’m only competitive talent-wise. I’m never competitive when it comes to numbers because that’s moreso a perception type of thing. I’m only ever competitive as far as how hard I’mma go or how good that I am at doing what I do. But I never get competitive number-wise.”

Polo G concludes, saying, “If it pans out that I get a number one, then so be it, but if I didn’t, then I wouldn’t be losing sleep about it.”

With the time frame for Migos and Polo G’s first-week sales calculations nearing its end, fans of the artists will soon see who ends up victorious in the sales battle. While we all await the official numbers though, what do you think about Polo G’s attitudes towards first-week sales and chart positions?

Billie Eilish Under Fire For Allegedly Using Anti-Asian Slurs & “Blaccent”

Seven-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish is facing the heat over a video that allegedly shows her saying the Asian slur “ch**k” and putting on a “blaccent”.

In the first seconds of the alleged evidence, the “bad guy” singer is seen supposedly mouthing the Asian slur under the guise of an internet challenge as the video is captioned, “if u can name every song in this i will pay you”, leaving lots of room for interpretation.

The middle of the clip is a little more incriminating, as you can hear Billie switch her tone and even hear her producer-brother Finneas ask her, “why are you talking like that” in the background of a longer version of the clip.

The most damaging evidence is presented at the end of the TikTok, showing Billie yelling in what appears to be an attempt to offensively mock Asian languages

Tiktok user @icxvy set the match to the fire when they posted the video on Monday with the caption “#billieeilishcancelled lol”.

Since Monday, the video has garnered millions of views and over 13K comments. Social media erupted with reactions claiming that this is just another example of Billie’s insensitive behavior.

Some fans claim the video is dated, possibly going back to 2015 when Billie was 14 years old and less aware of the impact of her actions. One TikTok commenter said, “yall so soft” and another commented “oh god she’s a CHILD. people make mistakes. people change.”

Billie has yet to comment on the video or set the record straight. She’s also been under fire for her alleged boyfriend’s homophobic and racist comments online, which you can read about here.

BRS Kash Samples Viral TikTok Song For “Oh No”

BRS Kash went viral on TikTok with his ultra-raunchy single “Throat Baby,” which went crazy after DaBaby and City Girls jumped on the remix. The Atlanta-based rapper, who is signed to Love Renaissance, is officially back with potentially his next big hit, sampling a popular sound from TikTok and catching onto the algorithm for his new track “Oh No.”

The dance banger was released today exclusively as part of the Madden 22 soundtrack, which was unveiled this week. The football-referencing smash will get your toes tapping and your mind ready for the gridiron.

This is the first new music from BRS Kash since his Kash Only mixtape earlier this year, despite some one-off appearances, including one for the LVRN cypher a few weeks ago. What do you think of the new record?

Quotable Lyrics:

Bust the defense, open runnin’ through somethin’
I don’t know no plays on the field, I just freeform
Caught it with the left but I’m better with my right arm
When they call Blitz, hit stick don’t mean no harm

Billie Eilish x Air Jordan 15 Teased For This Fall: First Look

Billie Eilish is among some of the biggest pop stars in the world right now and while she might be embroiled in some controversy amongst her young fans, it seems like she is unbothered. The singer-songwriter has a lot of brand deals going on right now and just last week, it was revealed that she would now be working with Jordan Brand. In fact, a highlighter yellow Air Jordan 1 KO colorway surfaced online shortly after the announcement, and it has already led to a large debate amongst sneakerheads.

Now, according to the Instagram sneaker insider @zsneakerheadz, Billie will also be getting her very own Air Jordan 15, and the mock-up for it can be found, below. As you can see, the shoe has an all-over creamy beige color, which fits with the monochrome aesthetic of the Air Jordan 1 KO which got shown off at the beginning of the week.

It has been revealed that the shoe is set to drop on September 9th, however, this date is subject to change. Once again, this is another polarizing model although considering it’s Eilish, we wouldn’t expect anything less.

Let us know what you think about this new shoe, in the comments section below.

Chris Brown & Wale Are Shooting A Music Video

It has been a while since we’ve last seen an official release from R&B singer Chris Brown, who has been missing since his early 2020 mixtape Slime & B with Young Thug. You’d have to go back even further to two summers ago for his most recent solo album, Indigo. With that in mind, fans have got to feel excited to see that the 32-year-old is shooting a music video for an upcoming single with rapper Wale.

According to The Shade Room, the music video that was being shot on Tuesday night is for the D.C rapper’s upcoming single called “Angles.” This was subsequently confirmed by an Instagram post from the singer himself, teasing the new track with interactive cover art and a brief glimpse of the song itself.

Brown notoriously has left his comments off all throughout his Instagram page, but his posts still receive an immense amount of support despite the generally cryptic captions. In teasing “Angles,” Brown had little to add to the post caption beyond the eyes and fire emojis. On the flip side of the coin, Wale has been more direct in promoting the upcoming single, drumming up hype for it on Twitter.

The two artists are mutual collaborators and have worked together multiple times in the past. Brown last featured on Wale’s “Heaven On Earth” off of his 2017 Shine record. Wale featured on Brown and Tyga’s Fan of a Fan collaborative album in 2015 on the song “It’s Yo Sh*t.”

Check out the behind-the-scenes look of the upcoming music video below and let us know if you’re excited for the song’s official release.
