Van Lathan Believes The Internet Gets People Killed

As the host of Hip Hop Homicides, Van Lathan receives an inside look at some of the culture’s most notorious deaths. From King Von to Pop Smoke to XXXTentacion, production sits down with loved ones and investigators to attempt to reconcile Hip Hop tragedies. The podcaster recently caught up with VladTV for an extensive interview, and during the chat, Lathan was asked about the most shocking thing he’s learned from being attached to the series.

“How much the internet is getting people killed,” he said. “Without a doubt.”

The rising influence of social media has been picked apart by professionals. Investigators reportedly claimed that Pop Smoke’s killers were able to find his location after the rapper posed in front of the home he was renting.

“I was profoundly changed by doing Hip Hop Homicides,” Lathan continued. “I talked to eight mothers, a father, I talked to several people’s kids.” Further, he added, “I just see the pain that a lot of this stuff causes.”

“So, for me, the reason why I say the internet is because there’s scorecards now,” said Lathan. “And in a lot of our cases, if the internet wasn’t a suspect, it was an accomplice. It was the place where everybody was goading one another, it was a place where you would get the clout. It was the audience that pushes your buttons to go and do something or have something done to you.”

He additionally clarified that he wasn’t “blaming the internet for the demise of these artists. Lathan recognized that the issues that lead to violent acts such as these existed long before the world wide web.

“What I’m saying is, I really didn’t realize how much we would be talking about tweets. How much we were gonna be talking about people that dropped their location.”

The men responsible for Duck’s murder were apprehended and charged with murder in October 2021. However, Memo wasn’t one of them. FBG Duck died after being shot in the chest, groin and neck.  A trial date for his murder has been set for October 2, 2023.

50 Cent has yet to respond to the legal threats. The Power creator has been gearing up for new seasons of his hit STARZ shows, BMF and Power Book II: Ghost. 50 recently used the arrest of BMF star Demetrius ‘Lil Meech’ Flenory Jr. to promote season two of the highly anticipated hit series. “What the fvck,” the hip hop heavyweight wrote. “LIL Meech didn’t hear them say cut. BMF returns Jan 6 Black mafia Fridays.”

Meech Jr. was arrested in Florida last week after a gun was found in his luggage. He was released hours later after posting a $2,500 bond. BMF returns Jan 6 on Starz. As for Memo, he deleted his post threatening to sue 50.

50 Cent’s latest television project, Hip Hop Homicides, focuses on the killings of some of the biggest names in the game who met violent fates, such as fallen Chicago rapper FBG Duck. The show’s content has created backlash from people mentioned in the FBG episode, including OTF rapper Memo600.

The latest episode of HHH delves into Ducks August 2020 murder, which points out those allegedly involved in the rapper’s murder; Christopher “C Thang” Thomas, Marcus “Muwop” Smart, Tacarlos “Los” Offerd, Kenneth “Kenny Mac” Roberson, and Charles “C Murda” Liggins. Memo600 was also named as a suspect in Duck’s murder, in which Memo had some choice words for Mr. Jackson.

Memo600 said, “@50Cent I’M SUING YOU FOR DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER.” The rapper also reiterated he wasn’t involved in Duck’s death, saying, “I DONT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT SOMEBODY BETTER EXPLAIN SOMETHING U PAID THE WRONG INVESTIGATORS DONT PUT ME IN NO MURDERS FAM CHASING CLOUT!!”

The tweet from Memo has since been deleted.
