‘Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby’ Set to Hit Prime Video This August

Lil Baby

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby, directed by Karam Gill and produced by Quality Films, MGX Creative, and 4PF, will be available exclusively on Prime Video. On Saturday, the feature-length documentary had its international premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, which was followed by a performance by Lil Baby.

“I’m blessed to be able to tell my story and have people care to hear it,” said Lil Baby. “This film is a real look into my journey, and if it inspires even one person to believe that they can get through hard stuff and dare to follow a dream, then it was worth every penny spent and hour worked. My story is many people’s story and I’m excited to share it.”

Lil Baby has become one of the most prominent artists in the world since his debut in 2017. Untrapped is a documentary that delves into his life and chronicles his meteoric rise to the top of the rap game. Baby, also known as Dominique Armani Jones to friends and family, was one of the most well-known people on the streets of West Atlanta until he was taken to prison.

Following his release in 2016, he was confronted with a difficult decision: return to the streets for quick cash, or take a chance on his charisma and unproven talent as a rapper. His second album, My Turn, was the best-selling album of the year in all genres of music in 2020. Lil Baby is now a loving father to his two young sons and an outspoken advocate for racial justice and police reform. Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby follows the meteoric rise of a solitary artist and activist while also delving into the structural oppression that prevents far too many people of color from achieving the American Dream.

Producers of Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby include Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones, Pierre “P” Thomas, Kevin “Coach K” Lee, Karam Gill, Daniel Malikyar, Andrew Primavera, and Blase Biello.

“I’m blessed to be able to tell my story and have people care to hear it,” said Dominique “Lil Baby” Jones. “This film is a real look into my journey, and if it inspires even one person to believe that they can get through hard stuff and dare to follow a dream, then it was worth every penny spent and hour worked. My story is many people’s story and I’m excited to share it.”

“This project has been in the works for several years now, during some of the most difficult times our country has faced,” said Karam Gill. “I couldn’t be prouder of the entire filmmaking team and the continued collaboration between Quality Films and MGX Creative to create another meaningful project that sheds light on larger societal issues. Lil Baby is someone who truly defied the odds, and I hope his story can bring positivity into our world.”

“With this documentary we got to highlight the obstacles and all the deep work that had to happen to get to where Lil Baby is now,” said Pierre “P” Thomas. “This raw footage is a powerful way to see that, and to see the negatives that were turned to positives. People will be beyond inspired.”

“Baby, like so many in this country, went through so many obstacles that could have thrown him into many bad places in life. To watch him come through to such a positive side is essential for people to see,” said Kevin “Coach K” Lee. “This documentary has the ability to change lives if viewers can believe just like he did.”

Untrapped: The Story of Lil Baby will debut on August 26.

Jennifer Lopez Documentary Trailer Teases Tensions Surrounding 2020 Super Bowl Performance

Jennifer Lopez Super Bowl

Just weeks before the entire world shut down in 2020, superstars Jennifer Lopez and Shakira shared the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show in Miami, in what was generally praised as a successful performance. However, the new documentary Halftime, appears to portray a darker side of the event with Lopez airing her grievances with many things surrounding the performance.

Lopez blatantly states that it was “the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl.” The two performers were only given 12 minutes total and she and Shakira were reportedly expected to “weave” their songs together in that 12 minutes. Lopez and Shakira agreed to split their stage time right down the middle. Lopez states that she believe they should have gotten 20 minutes total.

She also states that she wanted to give the audience “something with substance” and not the two performers “just out there shaking our f***ing asses.”

The documentary also showcases behind the scenes footage of the hours of grueling practice and prep work that went into creating the halftime spectacle, showing everything from the dancers practicing to the elaborate set design creation.

According to an official statement about the film:

“Halftime offers an intimate peek behind the curtain revealing the grit and determination that makes Jennifer Lopez the icon she is, from her performances onscreen and on stages around the world, to her Super Bowl Halftime show, to the recent Presidential inauguration. The documentary focuses on an international superstar who has inspired people for decades with her perseverance, creative brilliance and cultural contributions. And it’s only the beginning. Halftime serves as the kickoff to the second half of Lopez’s life, as she lays bare her evolution as a Latina, a mother, and an artist, taking agency in her career and using her voice for a greater purpose.”

Halftime premieres on Netflix on June 14. The trailer can be seen on YouTube here.

GAMECHANGEGAME POSTER 1 1 1

On June 14, 2022, the documentary Game Change Game will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Following the film’s premiere, journalist Marc Spears will chair a discussion with CJ McCollum, President of the National Basketball Players Association, and the filmmakers.

The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), a player-led union representing the 450 professional basketball players in the NBA, produced Game Change Game. The film was created in the summer of 2020 when the epidemic and the question of social justice dominated the national conversation. The documentary chronicles how NBA players came together and decided that “sitting on the bench was not an option” as they confronted and addressed social justice issues in America through personal footage shot by players and interviews with a variety of thought leaders, recording artists, and journalists.

Along with icons Julius Erving, Oscar Robertson, and Jerry West, the video features players CJ McCollum, Jaylen Brown, Andre Iguodala, Malcolm Brogdon, Garrett Temple, Donovan Mitchell, JaVale McGee, Danny Green, Rudy Gobert, Matisse Thybulle, and Tobias Harris. Doc Rivers, an NBA coach and former player, is another notable guest. Stephen A. Smith, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Marc Spears, Killer Mike, social justice advocates, and victims of police violence are among those who attended. The cast is completed by members of the NBPA leadership, who provide an insider’s view on the events of a basketball season unlike any other.

Christina Norman, head of content for the NBPA’s THINK450 Innovation Engine, created the film, which was produced by Norman, Jonathan Lia of Good Company, and Whitney Jackson. Spike Jordan and Maxime Quoilin, noted for their high, thought-provoking conceptual direction and ability to generate dynamic, groundbreaking images, collaborated on Game Change Game.

Aunjanue Ellis recently dazzled movie screens and received rave reviews after she starred opposite Will Smith’s Oscar performance in King Richard. Speaking in an exclusive to Variety, Ellis proclaims her bisexuality.

The Academy Award nominee previously said “Queer” on her sleeve when she appeared at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event but wondered why no one paid it attention.

“I was thinking, ‘Why didn’t more people pay attention to that?’ And I was like, they probably thought it said ‘Queen,’” Ellis said to Variety. “It wasn’t that I was expecting any sort of major reaction or anything like that. One of my family members noticed, but nobody else did.”

Ellis also detailed how her family and friends in Mississippi expressed being “hurt” by her decision to have the word on her arm.

“I am a work in progress, and my family and my community are works in progress. I really believe that that is important to say because I’m not alone. We see people on the other side of it, where everybody’s good and fine: ‘Love is love.’”

Ellis would detail that she didn’t acknowledge her bisexuality until she entered her 30s, reflects on her current relationship, and more in the full feature available here.

New Elvis Movie to Feature Major Hip-Hop Stars including Doja Cat and Eminem

Doja Cat Elvis

Elvis may be known for the blues, but the new movie about his life will feature some of hip-hop’s hottest names including Doja Cat, Eminem, CeeLo Green, Tame Impala, Swae Lee, Diplo, Jazmine Sullivan, and more.

The biography about the famous late artist aptly titled Elvis, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival this week. The biopic is directed by Baz Luhrmann (The Great GatsbyRomeo & Juliet) and stars Austin Butler in the lead role as Elvis. The movie also stars Tom Hanks and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The soundtrack, which will be released on June 24, the same day the movie hits theaters, is already getting almost as much hype as the film itself, namely for its eclectic mix of artists, many of whom have integrated his music into their own original works.

While the soundtrack itself is still under wraps, Doja Cat already teased her piece at Coachella last month. She performed her song “Vegas,” an interpolation of Elvis’s 1956 hit song “Hound Dog,” receiving rave reviews from the audience and critics alike. A sample is available on YouTube.

The other artists have not yet teased their work on the album, but it appears based on an Instagram post that Eminem and CeeLo Green have a collab on the soundtrack. In addition to the previously mentioned hip-hop artists, other notable names on the soundtrack include 70’s icon Stevie Nicks, Europe’s Måneskin, country artist Kacey Musgraves, new rapper Nardo Wick, Australian dance music trio Pnau, and other emerging artists.

In addition to gracing the album of what is already likely to be one of summer’s hottest films, Doja Cat has a busy summer coming up as she prepares to embark on The Weeknd’s Dawn FM arena tour.

Elvis Presley, often dubbed “The King of Rock and Roll” or sometimes just “The King,” was born in 1935 and died on August 16, 1977.
