Halle Bailey Recalls The ‘Agony’ Of Being Apart From Her Sister Chlöe While Filming ‘The Little Mermaid’

For much of her life, singer and actress Halle Bailey has worked creatively alongside her older sister Chlöe. From making YouTube videos, to getting signed to Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment label as Chloe x Halle, to acting on Freeform’s hit TV series, Grown-ish, the two have been a dynamic duo.

Over the past two years, the two have embarked on separate endeavors. They are both working on solo music and movies of their own. In 2019, Halle was announced to play Ariel in the live adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Production was often delayed, but took place during late 2020 and early into 2021. When the film wrapped last summer, Halle immediately went to film her parts for a remake of The Color Purple, in which she will play Nettie.

The Color Purple contains darker themes than The Little Mermaid, however, Halle revealed to Variety that while filming The Color Purple, she drew from the pain of being in London filming The Little Mermaid, and not being able to see Chlöe, who was in the US for much of that time.

“She couldn’t visit me; everything was on lockdown,” Halle said, “and it was that agony, that pain of being pulled away from something that’s like your arm, so I was pulling from that.”

The Little Mermaid will arrive to theaters on May 23, 2023 and The Color Purple will premiere on December 20, 2023.

DDG Says His Girlfriend Halle Bailey Inspires Him: ‘She Honestly Motivated Me To Be Better’

Last week, rapper DDG stopped by DJ Akademiks’ Off The Record podcast to highlight his career. Over the course of the nearly three-hour-long episode, DDG discussed his big hit, “Moonwalking In Calabasas,” landing on the coveted XXL Freshman list, and his relationship with singer Halle Bailey.

When talking about the singer and The Little Mermaid actress, DDG said that Bailey has been a source of inspiration from him.

“She honestly motivated me to be better and work harder and get to certain levels,” DDG said. “I look up to her in a sense…’cause I feel like I’m always the motivator, I’m the inspirer. I’m the muthaf*cka inspiring muthaf*ckas to do better.”

DDG also said that when he’s in the headspace of feeling inspired, it challenges him, but not in a way that results in him feeling burnt out. Rather, it is out of a pure desire to elevate his craft.

“It’s like I’m in a different mode now where I’m getting inspired by somebody. I feel like it’s healthy in that way for me ’cause it’s like a weight off my shoulders. It’s like, ‘Ok, I need to work harder.’ It’s challenging in a good way. It just makes me want to go harder versus feeling overwhelmed or some shit.”

Yes, That DDG Line About Him And Gunna On A Double Date Is About Exactly Who You Think It Is

One of the most fun parts of hip-hop music is deciphering rappers’ bars, unraveling their cryptic references and tongue-twisting wordplay to uncover hidden meanings or clever turns of phrase that tell us more about them past their boastful personas. One bar that captured fans’ imaginations came from Michigan rapper DDG on his viral hit “Elon Musk.” DDG hints that he and his costar on the song, Gunna, went on a double date, but doesn’t say with whom; fans naturally took the license to speculate on the rappers’ respective romantic partners, given who they’ve been seen hanging out with in recent months.

Now, thanks to Uproxx’s Cherise Johnson, we have confirmation: That line is about exactly who fans think it is. Sure, it wasn’t that hard to figure out, but it’s nice to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak. “I think it’s self-explanatory,” DDG elaborates. “I think the world knows that me and Gunna have a mutual situation with people that are related. Gunna got a Maybach, I got a Maybach — he got the truck, I got the car. One day, he was on a date, I was on a date, we pulled up at the same time.”

For those who don’t know, both rappers had been seen in the company of the sister duo, Chloe X Halle — Gunna with Chloe Bailey, and DDG with the younger sibling, Halle. Although the two R&B stars have been coy, and even Gunna denied that things were serious, DDG’s admission puts both relationships on Front street. You can watch DDG explain his bar above.

Gunna is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Halle Bailey Covered Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ On TikTok — Including The Howling Breakdown

It’s Chloe x Halle‘s world, we’re just living in it. And that “we” includes Radiohead, apparently. In a refreshing crossover moment, Halle Bailey, who is mostly known for her work in the R&B genre — oh, and for starring in the soon-to-be-released live action remake of The Little Mermaid — delivered a great indie cover on TikTok recently, revealing her love for Thom Yorke and co.’s best-known song, “Creep.”

@hallebailey

my version of creepppp this song was in my head all day i had to sing it to get it out ! 🥰🤣

Sitting alone with an electric guitar, Halle delivered a stripped down version of the song that showcases her excellent voice with flourishes and trills that most artists who take on this cover could never pull off. But the best part is when she launches into the wordless vocals that Yorke employs to accompany the song’s breakdown, and though her version is decidedly different from his, it’s definitely on par! “My version of creepppp this song was in my head all day I had to sing it to get it out !” she captioned the clip.

Kudos to Halle for showcasing her ability to pull off songs in all different kinds of genres, and maybe we’ll get a few more indie covers during the rest of the holiday season? I wouldn’t mind hearing her take on some Killers — whose melodies go great with female vocalists, as that recent Phoebe Bridgers mashup revealed — or maybe something by The Strokes?

Then again, she did go a bit indie earlier, with a take on Coldplay’s “Fix You,” check that out below as well.

because i couldn’t get this song out of my head… 💜#fixyou #coldplay #fyp
