Barack Obama’s (Brat) Summer Playlist Includes Fan Favorites From Billie Eilish, Charli XCX, And Shaboozey

Former President Obama has shared his latest summer playlist, and of course, he’s all-in on Brat Summer too. This year’s list includes new fan favorites from the likes of Billie Eilish, Shaboozey, and of course, Charli XCX, but it also has quite a few throwbacks, as well. “No Diggity” from Blackstreet makes an appearance, as does “Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting” from jazz great Charles Mingus and “How Do U Want It” from the late, great Tupac Shakur.

But, a big part of Obama’s appeal has been that he’s an older guy who keeps up with the times, and as per usual, he certainly does seem to have his ear to the streets — or at least, the algorithms. From Billie Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard And Soft, he’s got “Chihiro”; from Charli XCX’s unlikely political favorite, “365.” Shaboozey’s J-Kwon-sampling “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is a no-brainer, as is Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.”

However, there are also some surprises here. Rising British rapper Enny appears with her 2023 single “Charge It,” as does Saweetie’s newest single, “My Best.” R&B stars H.E.R. and Cleo Sol both appear (both songs are throwbacks from their catalogs, with “Process” and “Why Don’t You” representing their respective artists). But lest you think that golden ear is turning to tin, Tems’ “Love Me Jeje” also appears to keep things up to date.

You can see Mr. Obama’s full summer playlist below.

The 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony Will Reportedly Feature Snoop Dogg (Of Course), Billie Eilish, HER, Red Hot Chili Peppers, And More

In July, the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics had some firepower, featuring performances from Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, and Gojira. Now, the event is nearing its end, as the Olympics are set to wrap up this Sunday, August 11.

There’s going to be a closing ceremony, too, and now we’re starting to get word about which musicians will be involved in that spectacle.

A new report from Variety that cites “multiple sources” indicates that Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to perform. The performances will reportedly take place in Los Angeles (the host of the 2028 Olympics) and will be a combination of live and pre-taped performances.

Meanwhile, People also reports that HER will participate as well, by singing the United States National Anthem. Her performance will take place in Paris, live from Stade de France.

This follows reports that French bands Phoenix and Air would also perform during the closing ceremony, and there will apparently also be a large-scale stunt from Tom Cruise. Variety has since confirmed the reports of Phoenix and Air’s performances.

The 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony is set to broadcast on NBC, and stream on Peacock, on August 11 at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT).

H.E.R. to Deliver National Anthem Performance at the 2023 World Series

H.E.R. is expanding deeper into Hollywood with an upcoming Majorettes-inspired HBCU film set being developed at 20th Century Studios. But get this: H.E.R. is teaming up with The Color Purple. producers Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders on this high-profile project.

The versatile artist, who marked her entrance into feature films with the acclaimed “The Color Purple” last year, is set to take on a triple role in her upcoming project: developing, producing, and starring in the film. Inspired by the influence of majorettes on Black culture, H.E.R. brought the concept to Winfrey and Sanders following their collaboration on The Color Purple.

The production will collaborate with H.E.R., Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Sanders’ Scott Sanders Productions. Lauren Ashley Smith, known for her work on A Black Lady Sketch Show, will handle the film’s writing duties. Carla Gardini and Mara Jacobs are producing with H.E.R. Winfrey and Sanders.

Here’s the official synopsis:

The story follows an introverted ballet dancer from L.A. who defies her parents by putting her thriving dance career on hold to go to college. There, she joins her HBCU’s struggling majorette team and attempts to overcome culture shock, her stuffy dance background, and fierce rivals to help return the team to its former glory. “The intent is to make a funny, joyous celebration of authentic HBCU life told through the point of view of a majorette who, through experiencing HBCU life for the first time, will start to tap into who she really is,” states The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive report. “Majorette traditions, which combines marching band, dance, and gymnastic elements, has emerged in the last 50 years as a major cultural touchstone in college and Black culture.”

NxWorries Reveals Star-Studded Tracklist For New Album “Why Lawd?”

NxWorries are a versatile duo. Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge have worked with tons of musical titans since they released their debut album in 2018, so it should come as no surprise that they called in some of their famous connections for the follow-up, Why Lawd?. It was already going to be exciting to see how .Paak and Knxwledge interacted given the gap between releases, but throwing in legends from the R&B, hip-hop and comedy (!) world is bound to attract curious listeners.

Why Lawd? runs 19 tracks, which is the same length as the first NxWorries album, Yes Lawd. The first album had no guest features, however, whereas Why Lawd? kicks off with an introducing featuring none other than Dave Chappelle. The tracklist gets wilder from there, as Thundercat drops by on “KeepHer”, H.E.R. pops up on “Where I Go,” and Snoop Dogg splits the bill on “FromHere.” Nobody expected to see an Earl Sweatshirt and Anderson .Paak collab anytime soon, yet that’s exactly what fans are going to get on the penultimate track, “WalkOnBy.” Why Lawd? will also feature two appearances by Rae Khalil. Rae is an R&B artists who recently signed to Def Jam through .Paak’s Apesh*t label.

.Paak discussed his decision to revive NxWorries during a recent interview with The Root. He asserted that he wants to constantly challenge himself as an artist, and pushing himself to try new things with Knxwledge was an exciting prospect. “I don’t like to be comfortable,” the singer explained. “I like to push for different sounds and I feel like me and Knxwledge’s sound, NxWorries, is really needed right now.”

What are your thoughts on this tracklist for NxWorries’ Why Lawd? Do you think it will top their first album? Who will have the best appearance on the record? Will this be the best release for each member of the duo? We would like to hear what you have to say, so be sure to tell us in the comments below. Who Performed With Usher At The Super Bowl Halftime Show?

Usher 2024 Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show

Usher has been a premier showman for decades now, so it’s not surprising that he put on quite the performance for his Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show yesterday (February 11). Some surprises, though, came via the guests that Usher recruited to join him on the field. So, let’s run through who Usher performed alongside for his big moment (aside from the hundreds and dancers and backing musicians who were also involved).

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Alicia Keys

Usher started off solo, performing at least portions of “Caught Up,” “U Don’t Have To Call,” “Superstar,” and “Love In This Club.” Then, Alicia Keys emerged as the first guest, playing piano as she and Usher sang “If I Ain’t Got You” before transitioning into their chart-topping 2004 duet “My Boo.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Jermaine Dupri

Next was “Confessions Part II,” which featured an introduction from Jermaine Dupri.

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: HER

Usher ran through “Nice & Slow” and “Burn” by himself before HER played guitar (and absolutely shredded) on “U Got It Bad” and “Bad Girl.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: will.i.am

Immediately after HER was will.i.am’s turn, who emerged for a quick portion of “OMG,” his and Usher’s No. 1 hit from 2010.

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Lil Jon

Then it was onto Lil Jon, whose distinctive gravely yell introduced a snippet of his and DJ Snake’s “Turn Down For What.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Ludacris

Lil Jon stuck around for the next song as the performance headed into the finale. “Turn Down For What” transitioned into “Yeah!,” so naturally, this was Ludacris’ turn to pop up.

Usher’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance Got The Crowd ‘Caught Up’ On 25 Years Of Excellence

It feels a bit ridiculous to even type these words, but going into Usher’s Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show performance, there was a certain amount of skepticism about whether he was a “Super Bowl caliber” artist from some fans (you can probably guess which ones). Of course, once the veteran hitmaker hit the stage, he obliterated all doubts about his worthiness for the moment, reminding those fans that he’s got 25+ years of pop-R&B excellence under his belt.

The results of Usher’s preparations were on full display as he performed pop culture mainstays like “Caught Up,” “U Don’t Have To Call,” and “Superstar” over the course of the 15-minute set. After coming out to “Caught Up” flanked by dancers dressed in Roaring ’20s regalia, he ran through a progression of 2000s hits before bringing out Alicia Keys for a rendition of their duet “My Boo.” Usher then launched into a retrospective of his slow-burners like “Nice & Slow” and “U Got It Bad.” Naturally, he came out of his shirt during the latter. H.E.R. joined him onstage to play the guitar solo, he broke out the roller skates for a breakdown, and Lil Jon played part of “Shots” before they went into everybody’s favorite Usher song, “Yeah,” joined (of course) by Ludacris.

And just in case the performance itself wasn’t enough to turn those fans‘ expectations around, the inevitable streaming bump that’s sure to follow certainly should. After last year’s performance, Rihanna topped the streaming charts. The year before, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s 1999 hit “Still D.R.E.” reached over a billion views on YouTube, and in 2019, even the meme-baiting stunt performance of Spongebob Squarepants‘ “Sweet Victory” prompted a 500% increase in streams for the cartoon’s soundtrack.

Usher And H.E.R. Share New Music Video For “Risk It All”

Earlier this month, two R&B superstars Usher and H.E.R. teamed up for a sensual new song. The track is called “Risk It All” and it comes from the soundtrack to the recently released reimagined version of The Color Purple. The soundtrack also includes tracks from stars like Alicia Keys, Jorja Smith, Mary J Blige, Halle Bailey, Coco Jones, Megan Thee Stallion, Black Thought, Shenseea, and many more. “Risk It All” performed well on streaming and has racked up more than 600k streams in the three weeks since it dropped.

Now, the song is getting its own sleek Dave Meyers directed music video. The visual itself is already racking up tens of thousands of views in just its first few hours and it’s easy to see why. The intimate visuals feature the mostly-nude artists showing off their sensual choreography D’Angelo-style. It’s a dark and undeniably erotic video that matches the vibe of the song perfectly. Check out the full music video for “Risk It All” below.

Usher And H.E.R.’s Newest Video

Usher has had a pretty substantial 2023. His Las Vegas residency was well received by everyone in attendance. That included the numerous celebs who made headline news for showing up. It was also the inciting point for one of the biggest public scandals of the year. The drama between Keke Palmer and Darius Jackson began at one of Usher’s shows. The R&B legend himself was pretty comedic in his observation of how the events unfolded.

Usher also got tapped to perform at next year’s Super Bowl halftime show. He will take to the stage in Las Vegas in February of next year for the final game of the NFL season. He is also planning on releasing his brand new album on the same day. The album’s lead single “Good Good” features 21 Savage and Summer Walker. The song has performed very well since it dropped earlier this year racking up 27 million streams and still ranking on this weeks Hot 100. What do you think of the sensual new music video from Usher and H.E.R.? Let us know in the comment section below.

On Christmas Day, The Color Purple is set to dazzle another generation of filmgoers. In the new adaptation of the musical version of Alice Walker’s beloved novel, Fantasia will reprise the role she played on Broadway. But the all-star cast doesn’t stop there. Halle Bailey, Jon Batiste, HER, Ciara, and more will appear. Given the film’s musical legacy, the soundtrack has enormous shoes to fill.

On Monday, November 27, it was revealed that a jam-packed lineup of musicians set to appear on the album. Two of the film’s stars, HER and Halle Bailey, will lend their voice to the soundtrack, which is executive produced by Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders. It will also include Alicia Keys, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Megan Thee Stallion, Jennifer Hudson, Keyshia Cole, Jorja Smith, Coco Jones, Ciara, Mary Mary, and Missy Elliott.

The soundtrack’s first taste came from Alicia Keys’ song “Lifeline.” You can listen to the single below. The soundtrack will be shared on December 15 via WaterTower Music and Gamma.

Walker’s novel was first filmed by Steven Spielberg in 1985, with a cast that included Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, and Margaret Avery. It was a hit that earned 10 Academy Award nominations.

The Color Purple will hit theaters on December 25.
