Dee Barnes Comments On Jay-Z Winning Grammy Named After Her Abuser Dr. Dre

Jay-Z just won the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award at the 2024 Grammy Awards, an accolade with a difficult history to reckon with. That’s what Dee Barnes pointed out on Twitter upon hearing of the win, as she is the award’s namesake’s abuse victim. As such, this achievement does come with some baggage and a wider conversation on platforming these individuals, but it didn’t play out in the way that you would expect. As she suggests, she does not hold these actions against any one recipient of the Global Impact Award, especially not Hov, and expressed more concern with how the producer’s legacy erases his actions.

“The @RecordingAcad does not care about #ViolenceAgainstWomen,” Dee Barnes wrote of Jay-Z winning the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. “#JayZ received an award named after an #abuser and defended his wife in his speech while his daughter stood by his side.” As such, she seemed to suggest that the New York rapper actually fought back against the implications of this award by championing the females in his journey. While this is no easy fix for abuse or the tough discussion around these topics, it’s certainly something to focus on and emphasize, especially in a year in which almost every General Field nominee was a woman.

Dee Barnes Speaks On Jay-Z’s Dr. Dre Global Impact Award

However, some folks on Twitter weren’t buying Dee Barnes’ interpretation, for one reason or another. Sure, some will always dismiss “cancel culture,” but those who condemn Dr. Dre’s actions think Jay-Z’s speech wasn’t enough to make up for them. “Another reason I’m unmoved by that speech,” a user replied to her aforementioned tweet about the Roc Nation mogul. “Nah, it gave what it was supposed to give,” Barnes responded, and it’s unclear whether this is a fully genuine take or sarcastic disappointment.

Still, her next tweet was definitely more clear in this aspect. “It wasn’t a slamming it was a call out! They gave him the mic and he rightfully caled them out. You can’t do that from home on the couch. FORGIVE HIS BROOKLYN!” For more news and updates on Dee Barnes, Jay-Z, and Dr. Dre, stay posted on HNHH.

Mariah Carey Called Out For Not Helping Stevie Wonder At Black Music Collective Event

Mariah Carey is facing backlash on social media for not assisting Stevie Wonder at The Recording Academy Honors presented by The Black Music Collective (BMC) on Thursday night. Wonder paid tribute to Carey, who was receiving the Global Impact Award, but appeared to have trouble navigating the stage afterward as she addressed the crowd.

“Every time we meet and talk, it’s like having a brand new day,” Wonder said. “I thank you for your friendship, your heart and the consistent spirit of love that you show.” In response, Carey remarked: “I will never not get excited to be in the company of your greatness!” Despite the kind words, fans on social media weren’t entirely happy with the interaction. “Mariah was wrong as hell for that,” one user remarked when The Neighborhood Talk shared the clip. Another added: “He was thinking about her but she wasn’t thinking about him. I don’t like this.”

After the awkward incident, Carey reflected on her career in the music industry. “When I first started in the music business, I was often told to conform to certain expectations,” she explained. “I wasn’t encouraged to focus on my love for Black music. It took countless arguments, endless tantrums and mostly unwavering determination. But eventually, I was able to reveal my authentic self, as they say, and create music that came from my heart … I discovered a newfound sense of freedom and fulfillment. As I accept this award, I do so with gratitude for all of you here and every person who has supported me along this journey; the fans that have stood by me through thick and thin.”

Janet Jackson Didn’t Receive Grammys Global Impact Award Due To Super Bowl Scandal: Report

Amid Dee Barnes’s op-ed condemning the Grammys for honoring Dr. Dre, news about Janet Jackson has surfaced. The music icon has received just about every honor someone in her position could hope for. However, TMZ now reports that Ms. Jackson was initially slated to receive the Global Impact Award this year. Instead, the title went to Dre, and the outlet detailed what they learned happened, forcing the switch.

The Global Impact Award was bestowed courtesy of The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective during a private ceremony. Dre, Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, and Sylvia Rhone were lauded, but according to some, the award was supposed to include Janet Jackson. Reports state higher-ups didn’t know how to navigate the fallout of her Super Bowl scandal.

In 2004, Jackson took to the halftime stage and was joined by Justin Timberlake. It was then that he ripped off her top, exposing her breast to a global audience. Immediately, Jackson was vilified, and her career even took a hit. People chastised her for blemishing the wholesome sports event, but it would take years for the truth to surface. It was later learned that Jackson wasn’t at fault, and, after years of condemnation, Timberlake apologized to Jackson.

Additionally, Jackson didn’t attend the private Grammys ceremony because she had something else scheduled. There were conversations about the singer receiving the award from another location, as negotiations about CBS publicly apologizing were also entertained. TMZ reported they were unable to come to an agreement, so Jackson lost out on the honor altogether.

Dee Barnes was a music journalist who interviewed several hitmakers in the late 1980s and early ’90s. It was back then that she aired a segment that would ruffle Dr. Dre’s feathers as Ice Cube was in a beef with his former group N.W.A. Barnes reportedly ran into Dre at an event, and she claimed he slammed her head into a wall and kicked her after she fell to the ground. In her op-ed for Rolling Stone, Barnes not only detailed the assault but she called out The Recording Academy for giving an “abuser” his own award.
