Deion Sanders Confident Colorado Will Improve, Other Coaches Aren’t So Sure

Several college coaches are skeptical that things will improve for Deion Sanders and Colorado in 2024. Six coaches spoke anonymously to The Athletic. All six cast doubt on Sanders’ notion that the Buffaloes are headed in the right direction. Many of the coaches pointed to Sanders’ recruiting as a major sticking point. While Sanders did well recruiting at the skill positions, both the offensive and defensive lines were some of the worst in college football. Colorado gave up the second most sacks in the country with 56. Furthermore, as one coach noted to The Athletic, the transfer portal will contain around 30 “Power 5-caliber” offensive linemen. However, 65 Power 5 schools are vying for their commitment. Furthermore, the same coach noted that consistency was one of the most important qualities of an offensive line. Swapping out starters every year while also not developing recruits is not a recipe for success.

Furthermore, many coaches noted that Sanders has not been good to his coaches. He demoted offensive coordinator Sean Lewis after a 3-1 start because the Buffs were blown out by Oregon. Lewis has since left to become the head coach at San Diego State. The coaches who spoke with The Athletic predicted an exodus of coaching talent out of Colorado, with Sanders struggling to attract the game’s top assistants. For his part, Sanders has so far teased that former NFL star Warren Sapp will be joining his coaching staff next season. Sapp has no coaching experience at any level. However, he is the sort of headline-grabbing name Sanders has chased throughout his time at Colorado.

Is Colorado Ready For The Big 12?

Next season, Colorado joins the Big 12. Alongside them comes Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State. All three schools either beat Colorado or lost by less than a score this season. Traditional Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma will be gone. However, Colorado is by no means expected to suddenly become a title contender. Nine of the conference’s teams finished with a better record than Colorado this year. So did all three of the other Pac-12 teams also moving to the conference.

Shedeur Sanders is expected to return under center for the Buffs, but is that really the right move? Sanders missed the final game of the Buffs due to a back fracture. With no real improvement on the offensive line expected, Sanders can expect to take another pummelling behind the line next season. Not only will that affect his draft stock, but it could also impact his innate ability to play. However, the “Deion Doubters” will have to wait until commitment days, the portal, and the 2024 season itself to see if Sanders sinks or floats in Year 2.

Tuohy Family To Remove Public References Claiming They “Adopted” Michael Oher

As part of the ongoing legal battle between Michael Oher and the Tuohy family, the Tuohys have told a judge in Tennessee that they will be removing any reference to “adopting” Oher from their public materials. An attorney for the family said that the contentious claim will be removed from the family’s website and their public speaking materials. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Tuohys had never legally adopted Oher. Instead, they had placed Oher into a conservatorship. Furthermore, they allegedly went as far as to tell Oher that it was essentially the same thing as an adoption.

It’s the first major update in the trial since the Tuohys claimed that Oher, contrary to his claims, had been paid for The Blind Side. Earlier this month, Attorneys for the Tuohy family claim that Michael Oher made $138K in profits from The Blind Side between June 2007 and April 2023. According to documents, these payments ranged from $117 to $31,500. “By agreement between the family members including Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, their children SJ and Collins as well as Michael Oher. The book and movie proceeds were to be split five ways. These funds represent funds paid to Mr. Tuohy and the portion paid over to Mr. Oher,” the family’s attorneys argued. Oher’s team has since disputed this. This week, they stated that at least $2.5M is missing from the financial report submitted by the Tuohys.

The Blind Side Author Blames Oher’s NFL Career For Current Lawsuit

However, Oher’s ongoing lawsuit has been blamed on CTE by the original author of The Blind Side book. Michael Lewis, the man who first brought Oher’s story to the national spotlight, made some bold claims about why Oher had taken the Tuohys to court. “What we’re watching is a change of behaviour. This is what happens to football players who get hit in the head. They run into problems with violence and aggression,” Lewis told Samanth Subramanian of The Guardian. Lewis also made some wild claims about Oher’s ability. “He insisted that Oher wouldn’t have made it to the NFL without the Tuohys’ support. And that Oher did not, in fact, know much about playing football when the Tuohys first met him. On a football field, “he was not useful”, Lewis said,” Subrmanian’s article also noted.

However, Lewis’ claims of CTE and subpar talent are nothing more than a smokescreen. Lewis is a close friend of Sean Tuohy. The two grew up together and had a relationship before Lewis chronicled Oher’s journey in the blindside. The claims of CTE try to distract from the horrific allegations tying a white family to manipulating a Black teenager. Meanwhile, the talent allegations are meaningless. This is given the facts of Oher’s story as well as the fact that Lewis felt the story notable enough to dedicate most of a book to it.

I’m a virgin.’ Defendant Marcellus Wiley laughed and responded, ‘Relax, relax, wow! I don’t mean like that! I’m just going to come by there to get food from Grandma’s [Restaurant], so I’ll just come up to say hi before I head back.’ Defendant then joked that ‘nobody liked having sex with virgins.’”

Subsequently, the plaintiff allegedly apologized to Wiley, informing him that she just wanted to be upfront with him. She did this so that “he would not feel misled” about her intentions and what she was willing to do. Afterward, Wiley allegedly responded, “Ain’t nobody tryna have sex with no virgin! Don’t worry, I got you. Just coming to hang out while I eat. I don’t even have condoms on me.”

Following their conversation, Wiley eventually joined the woman in her single room, according to the lawsuit. In short, soon after his arrival, he allegedly sexually assaulted the plaintiff and raped her multiple times. The lawsuit further alleges that “[Wiley’s] actions were intentionally designed to cause plaintiff severe emotional distress or were taken with reckless disregard of the significant and/or substantial probability of causing plaintiff severe emotional distress.” In addition, the lawsuit states that “the following spring, while on mandatory leave, plaintiff attempted suicide. Plaintiff was admitted to a locked hospital ward for two weeks before being released.”

Marcellus Wiley’s Response

Soon after the lawsuit was filed in court, Marcellus Wiley addressed the topic on his YouTube channel. While he admitted to spending the night in the plaintiff’s dorm room, the former Buffalo Bills player denied the allegations of rape and assault. On his channel, he claimed that he was invited to her room and that she had to sign him in and out on his arrival and departure. Additionally, he insisted that although they “did mess around,” they “did not engage in intercourse.” No further information has been provided yet about the case.
