On this date in 1992, Bun B and Pimp C put out their first studio release Too Hard To Swallow and began their extremely successful career as Underground Kingz.

With UGK (short for Underground Kingz) being one of the first rap groups to come out of Texas to be regarded nationally, it’s easy to see how important it is to the South. At this time in the early 90s, there wasn’t much coming from anywhere other than New York or California. The only southern rappers that had hits were fellow Texas natives Geto Boys and Miami-based rappers 2 Live Crew. When this album dropped, it opened up a door for a whole new wave of southern rap to emerge.

Unlike the funkier, sample-heavy beats that UGK became known for rapping over later in their career, this album is true to its name as far as its production. The beats are a lot more aggressive and so is the lyricism. Nevertheless, this album is full of hits that are considered classics of the group’s catalog. These three tracks are “Something Good”, “Use Me Up” which hails a Bill Withers sample, and “Pocket Full of Stones”, which appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 hood classic, Menace II Society.

The album was recorded over a year period from 1991 to 1992 and released on November 9th, 1992 under Jive Records, the early 90s powerhouse label hosting acts such as E-40, A Tribe Called Quest, R.Kelly, and the late Aaliyah. The album has so far sold 369,511 copies and peaked at 37th on the Billboard US R&B Charts. After this album, UGK went on to put out five albums until the untimely passing of member Pimp C in 2007.

Actress Rosie Perez recently spilled some fascinating 1990s tea, revealing her unexpected role as the matchmaker for one of the most unlikely celebrity pairs of that era: Madonna and Tupac Shakur. Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show this week, Perez shared how a last-minute mix-up at the 1993 Soul Train Music Awards led to her playing cupid between the pop icon and the hip-hop legend.

Perez explained that her original date had canceled just half an hour before she was set to leave for the awards show, citing concerns over being seen by his girlfriend. Frustrated, Perez was about to leave dateless until her close friend Tupac called. After she explained the situation, the rapper immediately volunteered to step in as her date, even joking that her ex would be filled with regret when he saw them together.

As fate would have it, Tupac’s gallant gesture caught the attention of Madonna. When she spotted the pair at the event, Perez recalled, Madonna approached her directly, curious about her relationship with the “How Do You Want It” rapper. Perez assured her they were just friends, to which Madonna responded, “Hook me up.” Without hesitation, Perez agreed to play cupid.

It’s a little-known Hollywood connection that has fascinated fans for decades, adding another layer to the complex and legendary lives of Madonna and Tupac. Thanks to Perez’s impromptu matchmaking, the two superstars were linked for a time in the early ‘90s, a moment Perez looks back on with fond amusement.

Tory Lanez Seeks Mental Health Records in Civil Suit Over Alleged Hit-and-Run

Tory Lanez

Tory Lanez

Two years after rapper Tory Lanez was sued for allegedly sideswiping a car containing a pregnant passenger and then fleeing the scene, Lanez is now demanding access to the mental health records of the plaintiffs, Krishna and Jesse Grullon. The lawsuit, initially filed in Miami in 2022, accuses Lanez of causing the January 1, 2021, accident, which reportedly left both passengers injured. Lanez, however, denies being involved in any collision on that date.

According to court documents obtained by In Touch, Lanez and his legal team are pushing the court to approve their subpoena, which would require Krishna Grullon’s medical provider to release her comprehensive medical records, including psychiatric and psychological information. Lanez’s legal team claims that Krishna has been slow to authorize the release of her medical information, which they argue is necessary for their defense.

Lanez’s request for these records is intended to assess any psychological or emotional impact she may have attributed to the alleged accident. While he continues to deny involvement in the incident, the outcome of this motion could shape the course of the civil suit. So far, the court has not ruled on whether Lanez’s subpoena will be granted, leaving the next steps in this legal battle uncertain.

Today in Hip Hop History: A Tribe Called Quest Released Their Third LP ‘Midnight Marauders’ 31 Years Ago

midnight marauders

On this day in Hip Hop history A Tribe Called Quest Released their third studio album Midnight Marauders. As the group’s most popular work, this album marked the height of Hip Hop’s Afrocentric/hippie movement.

Aside from content, this album’s cover is it’s most distinctive quality. It features a full frontal portrait of the same black, green, and red woman from the The Low End Theory cover as well as head shots of some of the more well known rappers of the time, including: Dr. Dre, Afrika Bambaataa, Busta Rhymes, Chuck D, Ice-T, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Del the Funky Homosapien, P. Diddy, Heavy D, Too $hort, The Pharcyde, The Beastie Boys, and more.

With this album, Tribe took a slight step away their heavy jazz influence to perpetuate a funkier vibe. Ali Shaheed Muhammad‘s production sounded more on this album like something you would hear on the radio in the early 90’s (with a Tribe twist of course). The largest change however came in the realm of lyricism. Over their four year quest, Q-Tip and Phife Dawg picked up linguistic skills that come full circle on this album. Their cadence, flow, and diction all show signs of improvement along with the length and depth of their metaphors. Although this album features less subject specific tracks than their previous work, the two show that they have finally figured out how to intrigued the minds of both the Hip Hop faithful and everyday music listener.

Commercially, Midnight Marauders is the A Tribe Called Quest’s highest selling album. The album sold over 1,000,000 copies within it’s first year, making it a platinum hit. It also peaked #70 on the UK album charts, #8 on the Billboard 200, and took the top spot Top R&B/Hip Hop chart.

A lot of the album’s success is due to its timeless classic of a single “Award Tour” which peaked at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s influence has spanned decades with the track being referenced by the likes of Wale, Kanye West, Common, Azealia Banks, and Justin Timberlake.

Today In Hip Hop History: Wu Tang Clan Dropped Their Debut Album ‘Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)’ 31 Years Ago

NYC Mayor to Proclaim Nov. 9 as 'Wu-Tang Day' on 30th Anniversary of 'Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers'

NYC Mayor to Proclaim Nov. 9 as 'Wu-Tang Day' on 30th Anniversary of 'Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers'

On November 9th, 1993 rap music was changed forever. On this day, 9 Gods from the slums of Shaolin, who together form the Wu Tang Clan, released their first studio LP entitled Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
.
This album was recorded from 1992 to 1993 at Firehouse Studio in New York City. The album was recorded on Loud Records and distributed by RCA Records. It cost a total of $36,000 to complete.

The album’s concept was inspired heavily by the group’s love for Kung Fu flicks, particularly the 1978 Liu Chia-Liang film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, a story about a man who set out to become the master of all 36 chambers of kung fu and reach a form of enlightenment. In the movie, the 36th chamber of kung fu is to bring the knowledge and wisdom of kung fu to the people of the entire world. For Wu-Tang Clan, that was the goal with this album.

The project was entitrely produced by the group’s leader, RZA, through the art of sampling. The beats consisted of a lot of soul And martial art samples along with sounds from early hip hop synthesizers. Lyrically, this album was nothing like anything that came before it or would come after it. I was a change from the afrocentric “boom-bap” that was prevalent in New York. It was edgy and street while remaining intellectual in content. The Wu-Tang Clan was able to synchronize their hustler mentality with the wisdom of an ancient martial arts master. Well known singles from this album include, but are not limited to, “Protect Ya Neck”, “Method Man”, and “C.R.E.A.M.”
Upon its release, in an article for The Source, The Ghetto Communicator wrote “This record is harsh, but so is the world that we live in. For B-boys n’girls who come from the core of the hard, this is the hip-hop album you’ve been waiting for”. The rest is history.

Joe Budden Slams Drake Over DeMar DeRozan Taunts: “That’s weak. You a b***h”

Screen Shot 2024 11 08 at 4.08.12 PM

On the latest episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, things got spicy as they tend to get. Joe Budden and his co-hosts took shots at Drake over his recent taunts aimed at DeMar DeRozan during the Sacramento Kings vs. Toronto Raptors game. Marc Lamont Hill, who was a guest on the show, was particularly critical of Drake’s “tough guy” behavior courtside. “It was the corniest sh*t I’ve ever seen,” Hill said. “Drake’s not wrong for feeling a way. If I think we’re cool and suddenly see you Crip walking in a video that calls me a pedophile, I have a right to feel a way about that. But if I’m going to address it, I actually have to do something.”

Budden did not disagree. The rapper turned podcaster called out Drake’s approach to the conflict. “I’m not mad at [Drake] for feeling a type of way; he should,” Budden remarked. “It’s not about the conflict; it’s about how you handle it. But all that standing at the game, mumbling, and cutting his eyes—that’s weak. You a bi**h. I’m not unpacking anything further.”

Gotta admit, Joe spends a lot of time on Drake but I guess that’s his job, right? Talk about “the culture.” As long as we all agree Drake IS a part of the culture. Because he is.

Anyways … Budden’s comments follow Drake’s appearance courtside at the Nov. 2 Kings vs. Raptors game, where he seemed intent on provoking his former friend, DeRozan. Throughout the game, Drake stared DeRozan down and took verbal jabs from the sidelines.

Get this, Drake’s taunts didn’t end there; in a post-game interview, he boldly stated, “If you ever put up a DeRozan banner, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself.” And after DeRozan missed a three-pointer, Drake was seen mouthing, “Fk outta here, puy,” as the Raptors clinched a 131-128 victory.

Now when it comes to DeRozan, he didn’t engage. Instead he responded on social media by sharing a scene from Friday on his Instagram Stories, where Smokey acts tough only when Deebo’s back is turned—a fitting reference for DeRozan, who was once nicknamed “Deebo” for standing up to a bully in high school.

The tension between Drake and DeRozan reportedly began after the former Raptors star supported Kendrick Lamar’s Drake diss, “Not Like Us.” DeRozan, a Compton native mentioned in the song, publicly showed his loyalty to Kendrick by appearing in the song’s music video and attending the Pop Out concert.

LeBron James, Ja Morant On Court Rivalry Heats Up

Screen Shot 2024 11 08 at 3.59.14 PM

The Memphis Grizzlies took down the Los Angeles Lakers 131-114 at the FedExForum on Wednesday night, in a game that saw LeBron James and Ja Morant back on the court together for the first time in a while. While fans were thrilled to see the two stars face off, some extra drama added to the excitement.

ICYMI, during the game, Morant and James exchanged “too small” gestures after scoring against each other. Morant started it off after scoring in the paint against Lakers guard Gabe Vincent, bending down and holding his hand just above the floor—holding the taunt longer than usual for added emphasis.

James responded on the next possession, banking a shot off the glass while guarded by Morant. He mimicked Morant’s gesture, lowering his hand to the floor but with a quicker motion.

That part.

On the following play, Morant answered with another shot over James and went right up to bump him, earning himself a technical foul in the process.

It went there.

This was Morant’s first matchup against the Lakers in a while, but he still harbors some lingering tension from their intense postseason rivalry a couple of years back. “I don’t like them,” Morant admitted. “They knocked me out of the playoffs. And then last year, they came here and popped it on our home floor while I was in street clothes. I wasn’t tonight.”

Tension for real. Is it playoffs already?

Lakers coach JJ Redick chose not to comment on the interaction, cutting his media availability short.

To be honest, coach has more important things to worry about. Like winning.

Kendrick Lamar Earns 7 Grammy Award Nominations With ‘Not Like Us’ Racking 5 Noms

Screen Shot 2024 11 08 at 3.48.32 PM

The Kendrick marathon continues. On Friday, November 8, the Recording Academy revealed the full list of nominees for the 67th annual Grammy Awards, set to be held in February 2025. Kendrick Lamar emerged as hip-hop’s leading contender with a remarkable seven nominations. His hit single, “Not Like Us,” has been recognized in five major categories: Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Record of the Year, and Best Music Video. Additionally, Lamar’s feature on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That” earned two more nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.

What’s crazy is Kendrick’s Grammy haul comes despite not releasing a new album over the past year. Instead, he made headlines by being part of some of hip-hop’s most significant moments, including his impactful return on “Like That” in March, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His track “Not Like Us,” which climbed the charts and topped them amid his high-profile feud with Drake, further solidified his place in the spotlight.

The 2025 Grammy Awards will take place on February 2 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

As K Dot looks to expand his Grammy legacy, Kendrick Lamar hopes to mirror the success of Killer Mike, who swept the 2024 Grammys’ rap category. The Atlanta rapper claimed multiple awards, winning Best Rap Album for Michael and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Scientists and Engineers,” his track featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane.

Good luck Kendrick.
