Drake Joked About His Grammys Beef While Honoring Lil Wayne At The 2023 Recording Academy Honors

Drake has a strained relationship with the Grammy Awards. For instance, he dissed the Grammys onstage at the Grammys in 2019 and he later withdrew his 2022 nominations. Now, he has made light of the situation while honoring Lil Wayne at a Recording Academy event.

Last night (February 2) was the Recording Academy Honors Presented by the Black Music Collective at Hollywood Palladium, where Wayne and Missy Elliott were given the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Drake honored Wayne with a video message, which he started, “Good evening, Grammys. Well, I haven’t gotten to say that since 2016.”

He continued, “Lil Wayne… I love you so much. I know I probably get annoying with saying how much you mean to me and my family, but I think I speak on behalf of everybody when I say that our careers, our cadences, our melodies, maybe our face tats or our outfits or our decisions in general would not have been the same without your natural gift to just be yourself.”

Wayne gave a touching speech of his own, saying in part, “I want you all to know that I don’t get honored. Where I’m from, New Orleans, you’re not supposed to do this. I walked into my mama’s room when I was 14. She asked me for a kid because my dad was killed. And her son had just blown up and went on his first tour. When I came home she said, ‘Son, I can’t live in this house by myself. We’re going to have to figure something out.’ “I’d like to thank Antonia Johnson [his first child’s mother] for reasoning with me and my mom, and my life. I’d like to thank every single one of my kids and every single one of their mothers.”

Deion Sanders also honored Wayne with a video message and 2 Chainz, Swizz Beatz, and Tyga closed the show by performing some Wayne songs.

Drake Drops New Bars On IG After Urging Spotify To Pay Bonuses To Artists

Drake might have new music coming soon. During his performance at the Apollo Theater, he suggested that a follow-up to Her Loss could arrive this year. However, he provided fans with a glimpse of what he was working on. The rapper took to Instagram where he shared a slew of new photos along with a lengthy caption that previewed unreleased bars.

“Introduced myself to consistency &we fell in love
Ever since then we’ve been stuck &can’t get enough
@ this rate the going rate to see the one they rate isn’t luck
Easy to see your hard work just ain’t hard enough because look @ them &look at us
I’m just an observer who has seen enough
My mouth is becoming like the doors I opened for you I should have kept it shut
Wish I could explain what happens in person to these guys acting tough
Basically I let them keep dreaming and make believing til i decide to wake them up”

Consistency is clearly on Drake’s mind heavily these days. This week, Spotify revealed Drake as the first artist to surpass 75 billion streams on its platform. Though a historical milestone in Drizzy’s career, he doesn’t seem keen on receiving more accolades but instead, a bonus. He shared a statement explaining that platforms like Spotify should reward artists who rake in massive streams with cash incentives for streaming achievements.

“We should get bonuses like athletes to motivate the future artists to be consistent and competitive,” he captioned the post. “So feel free to send me a LeBron-sized [cheque]. I have enough dinner plates @spotify,” he added. The rapper previously shared a video of himself eating pasta out of a Spotify plaque after “In My Feelings” hit 1B streams.

Besides his streaming achievements, Drake will be hitting the road this year alongside 21 Savage. Tour dates leaked online but the two artists have not formally announced the tour. Hopefully, that information comes soon, as well as new music from both artists.

Drake Becomes The First Artist To Surpass 75B Streams On Spotify; Says He Wants A Lebron Sized-Check To Mark Occasion

Drake Has An Idea About Spotify Giving Bonuses To ‘Motivate’ Artists, But It Might Just Mostly Benefit Major Players Like Himself

Music fans love Spotify, as they’ve made it the most-used music streaming platform in the world. Artists, though, often have mixed feelings about it, mostly due to the platform’s often-criticized payment rates. Now, Drake has come up with an idea to inspire other artists on the streaming front.

In an Instagram Story posted last night (February 1), Drake shared a news story about being the first artist to pass 75 billion streams on the platform. He also wrote, “We should get bonuses like athletes to motivate the future artists to be consistent and competitive…so feel free to send me a Lebron sized cheque I have enough dinner plates [crying laughing emoji] [heart emoji] @spotify.”

That’s certainly an idea. While Drake would certainly benefit from an arrangement like that since he’s one of the platform’s most successful artists, it’s hard to envision a world where rolling out a system like what he described wouldn’t lead to backlash from smaller artists, sitting on the sidelines as they watch the rich get richer.

Indeed, Spotify has helped make Drake rich: In 2021, it was estimated that Drake had earned over $52 million in Spotify royalties thanks to 21.5 billion streams. Given that he has many more plays than that now, he’s likely earned much more than that estimate.

Drake Pushes Spotify To Pay Artists “Bonuses”: “Send Me A Lebron Sized Cheque”

This week, Drizzy became the first artist to surpass 75 billion streams on Spotify. It’s another major feat for an artist who basically broke every other streaming and sales record imaginable. However, Drake isn’t necessarily keen on celebrating the win with another plaque.

Just as athletes get bonuses, Drake would like artists to receive similar compensation from streaming services. The Canadian rapper stated artists should receive compensation, especially as they generate significant revenue for DSPs. He explained that financial compensation would ultimately motivate artists to deliver quality music.

“We should get bonuses like athletes to motivate the future artists to be consistent and competitive,” he wrote. In this case, Drake would certainly be getting bigger payouts from the labels. “So feel free to send me a Lebron sized cheque I have enough dinner plates,” he added with a laughing emoji and a heart.

Drake’s suggestion comes at an interesting time when major labels and streaming services want to shake the algorithm. Universal Music Group and major streaming services are in talks to develop a new model that would pay artists better. According to the Financial Times, UMG’s in talks with the major streaming platforms, including Spotify and TIDAL, to develop a plan to combat the growing number of bots and 31-second clips that qualify as a stream.

“You have a quantity over quality challenge right now,” said Michael Nash, Universal Music’s chief digital officer. Spotify currently sees 100,000 new songs uploaded to their platform daily.  “That’s making it harder for new artists to establish themselves, for new releases to come through.”

Of course, Drake doesn’t necessarily suffer from these issues as much as new and independent artists. Drizzy’s latest project, Her Loss, alongside 21 Savage reached one billion streams just after Christmas day – less than two months after its release. In 2021, he earned 500 million Spotify streams alone. Certified Lover Boy also broke the single-day streaming record on the service.
