This is not how things go in a battle. Well, at least in Hip Hop.

Drake has taken his feud with Kendrick Lamar to a new level by filing a petition against his own label, Universal Music Group (UMG). On Monday, the rapper accused UMG and Spotify of launching what he described as a “campaign to manipulate and saturate the streaming services and airwaves” with Lamar’s global hit diss track, “Not Like Us.” The song, celebrated as a modern classic, topped charts worldwide and has become a cornerstone of Kendrick’s discography.

In his filing, Drake claimed that the overwhelming success of “Not Like Us” directly harmed him financially. “UMG’s choice to saturate the music market with ‘Not Like Us’ comes at the expense of its other artists,” the petition stated, notably emphasizing Drake’s own career impact. As the owner of his entire catalog’s copyright through his own company, Drake alleged that the label’s actions led to “economic harm” and diminished opportunities for his music to thrive.

The petition further argued that streaming and licensing operate as a “zero-sum game,” where the success of one song inevitably limits the success of others. Drake also accused UMG of retaliating against his inner circle, claiming the company terminated employees associated with or perceived as loyal to him. His legal team referred to the promotional tactics employed by UMG and Spotify as “schemes,” asserting that these efforts unfairly prioritized Lamar’s song at his expense.

Drake’s decision to pursue legal action has sparked controversy within the music industry. Critics and insiders have mocked the move, suggesting it validates Kendrick Lamar’s critiques in “Not Like Us.” Charlamagne tha God shared his thoughts on social media, calling the lawsuit a weak response to losing a rap battle. “Because you lost a rap battle? Come on, man,” Charlamagne wrote.

Meanwhile, Lamar’s affiliates, including Rapsody, Mustard, and TDE’s Punch, joined the chorus of criticism, accusing Drake of exhibiting behavior fitting of the song’s title. “This is exactly what ‘Not Like Us’ was talking about,” one commented.

As the legal drama unfolds, the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar appears to be reigniting on both personal and professional levels, adding a new layer of intrigue to their storied rivalry.

Kendrick and Drake’s beef has become so historic within the culture, that some bright minded entrepreneur created the idea of packaging the entire series of diss tracks between Drizzy and K.Dot on a cassette tape and selling it as a collectible item for authentic Hip Hop aficionados.

X(formerly Twitter) user @3ternalsirenity posted a pic of the attractively packaged cassette on X yesterday(June 11) complete with a $199.99 price tag, but it was discovered that Tape Head City is selling it on their website for $16 (plus shipping).

The Certified Lover Boy bombed first with “First Person Shooter” featuring J. Col last year with a subliminal shot at Kendrick, who hit back with a feature verse of his own on Metro Boomin’ and Future’s “Like That”. Drake’s second effort was “Push Ups(Drop And Gimme 50)”, which was succeeded by Dot’s “Euphoria.” Soonafter, “Family Matters,” “Taylor Made Freestyle” and “Meet The Grahams” were just prequels to Kendrick’s monstrous smash “Not Like Us”, which seemed to have ended the battle.

Drizzy’s “Taylor Made Freestyle” is no longer available online as the 6 God had to remove it from all platforms after the Tupac estate issued a cease and desist letter to the former Disney star for his unauthorized use of ‘Pac’s voice.

Thus far, the last offering from either side was Drizzy’s “The Heart Part 6.”.

There is no doubt that Big Daddy Kane is one of the most prolific and respected emcees within the culture of Hip Hop. He’s probably your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper. So it definitely came as a surprise that BDK’s perspective of the Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar battle would put the blame of the battle going stale on Drake’s fans.

In anb exclusive interview with Art Of Dialogue, the Brooklyn rap legend stated that he lost interest in the recent battle between Drizzy and K.Dot, citing that Drake’s fans being more concerned about fact checking rather than bars and the rhyme delivery spoiled it for him.

“It’s not a competitive thing about who spit the better bars it’s a thing about fact checking to see if this person told the truth,” Kane stated. “If the line is dope and he dissed you, it’s dope man. It’s that simple. He bodied you with what he said.”

Tried and true on the battle grounds of emceeing, Kane contends that battles were fundamentally different during Hip Hop’s “Golden Era”, stating, “In my days of battling people I said stuff that wasn’t true.”

Kane doesn’t, however, blame Kendrick or Drake for how their fans weigh and judge the competition aspect. “Enjoy the music for what it is,” he said. “If that’s the way the younger generation looks at battles, good for them. It’s not about Kendrick or Drake. Their comments and their views, they make it unenjoyable for me.”

Kane Did say that in his opinion, the best of the “Big Three”, J. Cole, abandoned the battle to his disappointment.  “I think he is,” Kane honorably mentioned. “Like he’s my personal favorite.”
