J Cole Claims That Jay-Z Once Told Drake To Give Cole A Hit Single

J Cole and his manager and Dreamville cofounder Ibrahim Hamad continue to bring fans a compelling experience via their Inevitable audio series chronicling the former’s career. They brought fans a lot of interesting reflections and revelations so far, with one alleged interaction in particular driving a lot of fan interest. Moreover, the North Carolina rapper and Ib claimed that Jay-Z once told Drake to give Cole a hit single. This was at Hov and LeBron James’ Two Kings dinner during NBA All-Star Weekend in 2011, and Cole wanted to find a hit single before the release of his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story.

“We having a conversation. Me, Cole, Drake, Future [The Prince],” Ibrahim Hamad said of Jay-Z and J. Cole. “I don’t know who else but there were a couple more people. So then Jay walks in and he sees all of us together. He goes ‘Yo!’ and he looks at Drake and he says ‘Yo, give the boy one,’ points at Cole like basically ‘give him a hit.’ We’re all like ‘what?’ I even remember Future’s face being like, that’s embarrassing.”

“He’s looking at Drake and pointing at me and going, ‘Give him a hit, give my boy a hit,’ basically,” J. Cole remarked during the new episode. “What I do remember is being at the dinner after that and I’m just looking at Cole and he looks pissed,” Ib added. How they spoke on the meaning behind all this is that the two MCs were at a highly competitive point and had just collaborated on the song “In The Morning.” Not only that, but Cole had allegedly failed to put out a hit single before this album cycle despite previous attempts like “Blow Up” and “Higher.”

Apparently, J. Cole actually confronted Jay-Z about this situation later into the night, claiming hypocrisy over this demand for a hit single when Reasonable Doubt didn’t have that expectation. What’s funny is that not only did Cole World: The Sideline Story become his biggest album at that time, but “Work Out” proved to be a massive hit. So it all worked out in the end…

Joe Budden Explains Why Kanye West, Jay-Z & Rihanna Have More “Leverage” Than Drake, Lil Wayne & Nicki Minaj

The Joe Budden Podcast recently discussed the long-standing and complex rivalry between the Roc-A-Fella and Cash Money camps, plus their ensuing protégés and branched-off cliques. Specifically, the program’s titular host doesn’t want folks to compare Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj to Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna for a few reasons. He posited that Hov was able to form necessary industry relationships and then leave to lead his own endeavors, although cohosts Ice and Ish suggested that the New York rapper entered the game with much more independence and autonomy than someone like Drizzy did. Specifically, this is in regards to owning his material.

While Joe Budden disagreed and suggested that Jay-Z worked to get out of an exploited position, all agreed that there was still a big level-up that Jay took to become so massive, something that the Cash Money (specifically Young Money) camp has yet to do in their eyes. One factor they presented was domination in the industry and from a product standpoint – in this case, music. Ish also brought up Hov’s marriage to Beyoncé and his move into other side ventures that generated a lot of money.

The Joe Budden Podcast Compares Jay-Z’s Moves To Drake’s

Overall, this contributes to The Joe Budden Podcast‘s notion that people like Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna have more “leverage” than Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj due to their extracurricular projects and streams of massive revenue that land them in a top-tier industry spot. “Y’all not the only people that feed me,” Ish characterized the Roc family’s position of negotiations with the music industry. Of course, all of this ties back to the OVO mogul’s moves against UMG and Spotify in the legal space.

Elsewhere, Joe Budden doesn’t think there’s a blueprint to this process, and that it’s up to each artist who makes it in the industry to find their exit out of it. It’s all a debate around how to manage your money and power, especially if you want to stay true to your own goals. The Jay-Z/Drake debate has a new angle now thanks to this legal action, and that exhausting conversation will just keep on going.

Joe Budden Podcast Debates If Drake Is In A Position To Go At JAY-Z

Overall, 2024 is a year to forget for Drake. He was publicly embarrassed by Kendrick Lamar and some of his output is some of the worst of his career. However, it seems like he may be heading into 2025 with another titan in his sights. At the top of the week, Drake interestingly posted the infamous 2014 elevator quarrel between JAY-Z and Solange to his Instagram Story. It was a weird and inexplicable debacle that seems to not be an issue for anyone that was involved. Even with that being known, there’s some speculation going on that is suggesting that Drizzy’s trying to use it as ammunition against Hov.

Some think that this has something to do with Jay selecting Kendrick for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, but it’s murky. Overall, Drake has had issues with the Roc Nation boss previously, so it’s not too surprising in that regard. However, it is in that same breath because The Boy tried to take down K. Dot and it fired back in a pretty devastating fashion. Of course, there’s also the Pusha T takedown from a few years ago as well.

The Joe Budden Podcast Debates Drake & JAY-Z

Some of these points were made on a recent episode of The Joe Budden Podcast while debating whether or not Drake should go at one of the G.O.A.T.s. One person on the panel thinks because he’s been so dominant in terms of sales and plays, his ego is clouding his judgement and it’s causing him to lose to the “big dogs.” They also brought up Hov’s past battles with a Nas, for example. Joe Budden thinks Drake should take the Nicki Minaj approach and go for the corporations (Roc Nation in this case) that he feels are sabotaging him. Both are pretty sound arguments, so we need to hear your answers to the following questions.

What are your thoughts on Joe Budden and the panel debating whether or not Drake should start feuding with JAY-Z? Whose argument do you agree with more and why? Do you think Drizzy was calling out Hov a few days ago? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Drake, JAY-Z, and Joe Budden. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.
