DatPiff Announces New Internet Archive Partnership

DatPiff is easily known as the last relic of the blog era. A bridge between the blog era and the streaming era if you will. DatPiff has one of the most important musical databases that date back to the last decade. Without the mixtape platform, we lose tons of music that couldn’t make it to DSPs. That means all of you Meek Mill fans would lose all the early tapes if DatPiff were to shut down. It’s an absolute staple within the culture.

Since its servers crashed back in mid-March, the music platform has had to fight off many rumors that it would be shutting down for good. Furthermore many thought they would be saying goodbye to DatPiff after the crash. Additionally, since March users were unable to use the platform to download old mixtapes or any music for that matter. This caused a frenzy on the internet. However, DatPiff had a message for all the naysayers and scared fans alike.

DatPiff Sets The Record Straight

The mixtape downloading service dispelled all the rumors and speculations with a well-worded tweet. Despite all the rumors, DatPiff says they are happy to report that they will still be “supplying you with all the mixtapes you love.” Moreover, the platform elaborated that they’ve been, “working through technical issues on our site and app.” However, they noted that they still are active on their YouTube. After dispelling all the rumors and commotion, DatPiff left a sentiment thanking everyone for their concerns. “Thanks for all the love and concerns but we promise, we are still here,” said the platform.

In other news, reports surfaced that is “working away” on the next generation for the mixtape platform. On their site, they have a message plastered on the front in all caps saying “EMBRACE THE NEXT GENERATION OF DATPIFF.” The message reads, “We’re evolving beyond our website and app to take Datpiff to the next generation!” “While we’re working away on the next iteration of Datpiff, we’ve partnered with Archive.org to continue to make the Library accessible!” The music platform ended the cryptic message saying they’ll share more in time, however, the response from fans has been explosive. Since announcing that they’re archiving their database, fans are excited to know the bridge between the blog era and the streaming era will not be broken.

DatPiff Clarifies That It Isn’t Shutting Down

DatPiff has confirmed that it is still up and running but dealing with technical issues on its website and app. In the meantime, the company will continue to update its YouTube page. The clarification came on Twitter after a number of users began reporting that the platform was closing down. The rumor is believed to have started with the circulation of a popular post on the subreddit r/hiphop101. In response to the story, tons of fans came forward to reflect on the impact of DatPiff as well as some of their favorite projects released through the site.

“Despite the rumors, we are happy to report that we will still be supplying you with all the mixtapes you love,” the statement from DatPiff reads. “We’re working through technical issues on our site and app, but still actively update our youtube! Thanks for all the love and concerns but we promise, we are still here.”

DatPiff Current Situation

“I haven’t used DatPiff in years but if the site is really gone then RIP, a lot of history was made there and changed a lotta artist’s lives,” one user wrote in response to the rumors. Another added: “RIP Datpiff — who probably has the most important archive of music from the past 10-15 years anywhere on the internet. It was a bridge between the blog era and the streaming era — and a hub for projects that will never see the light of day on DSPs. Thank you for your service.” “Pioneers of the mixtape era,” another Twitter user said of the platform. “Thank you for shaping the culture in the 2000s and changing the music industry forever. Long live Biggy Jiggy Mixtapes. So many classic tapes from Weezy and Gucci Mane. A launching pad for Drake, Wiz, and so many more.”

DatPiff launched in 2005 and quickly became a staple in the hip-hop community. It hosted a number of classic mixtapes from countless iconic artists including A$AP Rocky, Big Sean, Drake, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and many more. Check out the responses to its previously rumored shutdown below.

Twitter Mourns DatPiff

No, DatPiff Didn’t Shut Down, Despite What Online Rumors Suggested

Hip-hop fans were dismayed to learn that long-running mixtape streaming site DatPiff — whose existence even predates that of more mainstream DSPs like Spotify — had shut down yesterday, leading to a period of mourning on social media for one of the pillars of the modern-day internet.

That is until DatPiff’s Twitter account popped up with a message reassuring users that the service was still alive and well. “Despite the rumors, we are happy to report that we will still be supplying you with all the mixtapes you love,” it read. “We’re working through technical issues on our site and app, but still actively update our youtube! Thanks for all the love and concerns but we promise, we are still here.”

So, what gives?

Well, you know how I’m constantly harping at you all about making sure you get your news from trustworthy sources? Yeah. Reddit.com is not a trustworthy source. Apparently, a subscriber of the subreddit r/hiphop101 interpreted some of these technical glitches as a sign that the company had completely folded. That post was then shared widely among hip-hop heads on social media — there’s an Instagram screenshot of the Reddit screenshot in the tweet below, courtesy of Complex — and it seems everyone pretty much ran with this story without confirming it via any legit news publications or first-person accounts.

DatPiff, which hosts mixtapes from both megastars and up-and-coming artists, holds a unique place in hip-hop history. Because it was easier to upload a new tape to the site directly than going through Apple Music (formerly iTunes, the only real name in the streaming game at the time), many artists got their start by sharing DatPiff links with their fans in the early days of social media. That includes names like ASAP Rocky, Big Sean, Drake, J. Cole, and Kendrick Lamar, among others (I wrote about some of them here). The entire blog rap era basically ran on DatPiff (and illegal file-sharing sites like ZippyShare and MegaUploads), and fans were quick to acknowledge its importance while (mistakenly) eulogizing the site.

Of course, with the reveal that the site wasn’t shutting down (yet), it seems that those flowers, while warranted, were premature. If the site can itself back up and running, now might be a good time to download all your favorite tapes for posterity — just in case. If not, well, there’s always LiveMixtapes.

DatPiff Eases Rap Fans Minds After Rumors of Shut Down: 'We Are Still Here'

Fans were holding a funeral for legendary mixtape platform Datpiff a little bit too soon. Fans noticed the site was down, leading to rumors that the mixtape hub had run its course.

Hitting Twitter, Datpiff revealed they are still around, just working through tech issues.

“Despite the rumors, we are happy to report that we will still be supplying you with all the mixtapes you love,” Datpiff’s official Twitter wrote. “We’re working through technical issues on our site and app, but still actively update our youtube! Thanks for all the love and concerns but we promise, we are still here.”

A post from Reddit claimed the site was no longer responsive after months of acting slowly. Turns out it is just in update mode. The iOS web app is currently experiencing bugs and the Android version is currently not available.

Thankfully, Datpiff is still around.
