Today in Hip-Hop History: Black Moon Dropped Their Debut Album ‘Enta Da Stage’ 31 Years Ago

On this date in 1993, Buckshot Shorty, the 5 Foot MC amd DJ Evil Dee released their first full-length album, Enta Da Stage, in 1993 on Nervous Records. This is undoubtedly one of the most pivotal albums to the sub-genre now coined as “backpack rap”.

With total in-house production from Evil Dee and The Beatminerz’ Mr. Walt, Enta Da Stage tells the narrative of the gritty streets of Crown Heights, Brooklyn from the perspective of young, Black teenagers submerged in that environment. With a very cinematic feel, the album captures the essence of the unforgiving streets while maintaining its conceptual focus of using the music to magnify the environment. The album also introduced fans to the poetic, weed-puffing duo Smif N Wessun and Heltah Skeltah, the origin of the late, great Sean Price.

Recorded entirely in the world-renowned and now-defunct D&D Studios, tracks that propelled the project include songs like “I Got Cha Opin”, “How Many MCs”, which was powered by a KRS-One sample, and the lead single, “Who Got The Props?”, the track that would forever etch Black Moon in Hip Hop history.

Salute to Buck, Evil Dee, 5Ft., Mr. Walt, Dru Ha, and the rest of the Duck Down/Boot Camp Clik family for this timeless classic!

Da Beatminerz Are Not Suffering From “Stifled Creativity” On Their First LP Two Decades Later

“We started working on this album in 2009… the focus was to stick to our core sound. We just wanted to bring back our traditional way of attempting a classic album. Everybody has their own type of hip-hop that they love. Well, this is ours”. Those were the words of Mr. Walt, one half of the producing tandem, Da Beatminerz, speaking about their album, Stifled Creativity, according to The Source.

Mr. Walt and DJ Devil Dee have been in the business for about 30 years at this point. So, the former’s comments about what type of rap they love and what they like to stick to are accurate. Across the 22-track escapade, you are going to hear what this duo has perfected up until this point. From stellar sample flips and disc scratching, Da Beatminerz are just further cementing their talents here. Even taking 20 years off in between albums cannot stifle their creativity. If you want to check out their insane boom-bap beats, as well as lyrical genius KRS-One, Ras Kass, and more, see the links below.

Da Beatminerz Tap De La Soul, Pharoahe Monch And Others For “My Year” Single, Accompanied By Animated Video

While Da Beatminerz have come to define a very specific sound in Hip-Hop over the course of their illustrious career spanning more than three decades, the bulk of their production work is credited on albums by other artists. Their recent output, however, has been focused on their own proper full-length album, Stifled Creativity. On Friday (5/10/2024), the seminal Hip-Hop production duo, also known as the “Boom Bap Ambassadors”, shared the album’s second single “My Year“, with verses from De La SoulPharoahe MonchRasheed Chappell, and Corey Glover (of Living Colour). Today (5/14/2024), the song’s vibrant Anthony Edwards-animated music video debuted on YouTube.

Been friends with De La since 88 and Monch since 87 so the relationship  was already there. I met them all at the record store I worked at (Music Factory in Jamaica, Queens) and this is the second song I did with both (De La “The Hustle” & Monch “Tight [REMIX]”, explains Mr. Walt of Da Beatminerz). “My Year” was one of the first songs we worked on when we started the album and the order you hear them in is the order we made. It took a minute to get Dave’s vocals because of his health. When we got them, We were so grateful and  appreciative. He didn’t have to do the song but he came through & that the world to me.I met Rasheed through Kenny Dope. When I heard him, I automatically wanted to work with him, so when we put the blueprint together for the song, I knew he would fit perfectly. The icing on the cake was Corey Glover (Thanks to Guy Routte). Everything came together just how we wanted.

While Da Beatminerz were responsible for all production on Black Moon‘s well-received 2019 comeback album Rise of Da Moon, it’s still been nearly 20 years since brothers Mr. Walt & DJ Evil Dee released their own proper, full-length album. Earlier this month, the “Boom Bap Ambassadors” turned the tides by officially announcing their forthcoming album Stifled Creativity and releasing the project’s lead single “Seckle”, featuring the “Blast Master” KRS-One.

Speaking on this legendary collaboration, Mr. Walt says, “We have had the privilege to work with the great KRS-One for over 20 years now and this is the song we always wanted to make with him. It is an honor and a pleasure.”” Black Moon’s DJ Evil Dee adds, “It’s always dope working with KRS-One. We always make those dope Boom Bap Joints with him. Word!

Da Beatminerz Return with Boom Bap Anthem "Seckle" Featuring KRS-One

After nearly two decades since their last full-length album, Da Beatminerz, the renowned “Boom Bap Ambassadors,” make a triumphant return with the release of “Seckle.” The new single, available on all digital streaming platforms via Soulspazm, features the legendary “Blast Master” KRS-One. This marks Da Beatminerz’s first proper album since their well-received production work on Black Moon’s comeback album “Rise of Da Moon” in 2019.

“Seckle” serves as the lead single from Da Beatminerz’ upcoming album, “Stifled Creativity.” The track, produced by brothers Mr. Walt and DJ Evil Dee, captures the essence of boom bap with its infectious beats and features a nod to KRS-One’s opening verse on the Boogie Down Productions classic “My Philosophy.” As pioneers of the hip-hop production scene, Da Beatminerz continue to showcase their enduring influence on the genre with this highly anticipated release.
