Cordae Announces The Release Date For His New Album, ‘From A Bird’s Eye View’

When Cordae released his debut album, The Lost Boy, in 2019, it was as a newcomer who was then best known as a member of the YBN crew. Now, two years and a name change later, we know the release date for the album’s long-awaited follow-up, From A Bird’s Eye View. Preceded by the well-received singles “Super” and “Sinister” featuring Lil Wayne, From A Bird’s Eye View is scheduled for release on January 14, 2022. It’s also available for pre-order here.

On a Zoom listening session for the album ahead of the announcement, Cordae revealed the reasoning behind the album’s title, comparing it to The Lost Boy and pointing out his evolution stylistically since 2019, saying that on his first album, he felt reluctant to leave behind his old life and embrace stardom, while on his new one, he’s taking stock of how fame has affected hiim. He also shared that life changes, such as his first trip to Africa, losing a dear friend, and having to ride out a pandemic all contributed to his growth. The new album will have high expectations; despite being his debut, The Lost Boy was nominated for a Best Rap Album Grammy Award at the 2020 Grammys, as well as a Best Rap Song award for “Bad Idea” with Chance The Rapper.

Cordae And Lil Wayne Lead Well-Orchestrated Revolution In Their Video For ‘Sinister’

While it’s been two years since Cordae released an album, the DMV rapper has made the wait for his next full-length release more than bearable. Between a collection of strong singles and guest features, Cordae has supplied his fans with plenty of music to ease the wait for his second album, From A Birds Eye View. That streak continues with his latest single, “Sinister.” The track pairs the young spitter with a hip-hop veteran, Lil Wayne, as the two strike fire for an impressive lyrical onslaught.

The new track arrives with a matching visual that sees Cordae and Wayne lead a well-orchestrated revolution. Similar to what the likes of Malcolm X and Fred Hampton might have done back in the back, the two rappers stand in front of fellow group members to lead a charge against the oppressor. Through it all, Cordae and Wayne deliver very sharp verses that only build anticipation for what will appear on From A Birds Eye View.

“Sinister” arrives after Cordae lent a verse to Nas’ “Life Is Like A Dice Game” and a remix of Eminem’s “Killer” with Jack Harlow. Cordae also dropped off his Just Until EP with Young Thug and Q-Tip earlier this year.

Hit-Boy Teases A New Cordae Song He Produced Featuring Lil Wayne

It looks like Lil Wayne has made good on his promise to feature on Cordae‘s upcoming sophomore album, according to a teaser of the music video posted by Hit-Boy, who produced the track. Hit teased the new song with a tweet featuring a clip taken during the video’s shoot from just off-camera, in which Cordae and Wayne wear matching peacoats and rap to the camera surrounded by a crew of men in outfits nodding to the Black Nationalist movements of the 1970s.

Lil Wayne first expressed interest in appearing on Cordae’s new album back in May of 2020, when Cordae appeared as a guest on Wayne’s Young Money Radio podcast. Wayne told Cordae, “All you gotta do is text me the song, I’ll murder it and send you the finger so you know it’s dead.” At the time, Cordae was just working on songs for the project, saying, “I’m like 50 songs in. I’m just trying to cut it down.”

A year — and a name change — later and Cordae seems to be gearing up for the eventual release, dropping a freestyle to Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy” telling fans they are “not ready” for it, dropping a new single, “Super,” showing off his sharpened pen game, and appearing on Desus & Mero to kick off his press promotion. Judging from the snippet shared by Hit-Boy, it’s going to build on the blueprint laid down by his debut The Lost Boy, with a renewed focus on both bars and smooth production from some of the most notable names in the game.

Cordae Explains Why He Thinks ‘Squid Game’ Is ‘Oversaturated’ On ‘Desus & Mero’

Sunday night, Cordae dropped by Desus & Mero to talk about his new music and his recent physical transformation posts on social media, but because it’s Desus and Mero, the conversation was quickly sidetracked into NSFW discussions about adult film, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, and of course, the inescapable juggernaut of popularity that is Netflix’s Korean drama Squid Game, which Cordae thinks is “oversaturated.”

“That’s like a head ass, now,” Cordae said of the show when asked whether he’d watched it recently. “N****s overdid Squid Game so much.” While he allowed that “a lot of n****s did some dope sh*t with it,” he adamantly rejected Desus’ suggestion that he make an album based on the show. He did, however, seem interested in a parody of the show mentioned by the host. “I gotta check that, just for curiosity,” he quipped.

On a more serious note, Cordae explained how he lost so much weight in the photos he recently posted. He admitted that “I was just eating terrible. This is my first time getting money like this and we eating steaks, going to Mastro’s every day, getting chefs to pull up.” He says that he was able to shed the extra pounds by “just staying disciplined.”

Terrace Martin’s New Album ‘Drones’ Will Feature Cordae, Kendrick Lamar, And Ty Dolla Sign

Although Terrace Martin’s last solo full-length collection came out four years ago (2017’s criminally overlooked Sounds Of Crenshaw Vol. 1 with The Pollyseeds), the Los Angeles producer has nevertheless remained busy throughout the past year, co-producing a number of EPs including They Call Me Disco with Ric Wilson and joining the jazz supergroup Dinner Party with 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington, and Robert Glasper. However, today he announced his solo return with Drones, a new album coming out this Friday, November 5.

Included on the album’s 13 tracks are appearances from a veritable who’s-who of hip-hop luminaries including Cordae, D Smoke, Kendrick Lamar, Smino, Snoop Dogg, Ty Dolla Sign, and YG. Martin’s Dinner Party bandmates Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper are also set to appear, along with a genre-hopping collection of rising stars and well-known hitmakers including Arin Ray, Celeste, Channel Tres, Hit-Boy, James Fauntleroy, Kim Burrell, and Kim Burrell.

In his press release for the new album, Martin teases the eclectic mix of sounds he intends to display throughout: “There are touches of R&B, touches of jazz, touches of hip-hop, touches of classical, Cuban music, West African music, house music,” he says. “You’re going to hear all elements of Black music within this record. It’s not one element I can leave out if I call myself a true Black artist.”

Drones is due 11/5 via Sounds of Crenshaw / BMG. You can pre-order here and check out the lead single, “Leave Us Be,” above.
