Usher Refutes Claim That R&B Is Dead, Says The Idea “Sounds Crazy”

Usher paid tribute to the next generation of R&B artists during a new cover story for Billboard and says that anyone suggesting the genre is dead, “sounds crazy.” The comments come after SZA, Victoria Monét, and Coco Jones, among other artists were recognized at the Grammy Awards, last weekend.

“I’m very happy that there’s a new installation of R&B artists who care to be authentic to what they are creating, inspired by artists of the past,” he told the outlet. “Everybody who has ever said to me that R&B is dead sounds crazy. Especially when I know the origins of R&B are in all other genres of music.”

The legendary singer continued: “My point is, I never felt like R&B was dying. I think it just needs expansion. We’re moving toward a standard where people are looking at snippets — TikTok, Instagram and other things — and when fans get it, they take it and do something with it. But if we start to think of it that way and create from that place, the standards for R&B will change. You won’t be able to compare it in an old-versus-new way. It’ll just be what it is.” He added that the genre needs more spaces similar to the Lovers & Friends Festival. “It’s about creating commerce in other spaces. Lovers & Friends is a successful R&B festival that gives you a place to go and celebrate the songs that we make,” Usher said. “We need things that you associate with R&B that you can buy into. Like with hip-hop — glasses, clothes, cars, jewelry, sneakers … ancillary things that people can access. R&B needs and has the potential to have those things as well.”

Usher And Pheelz Find Themselves In ‘Ruin’ Over Women On Their Globally-Inspired New Single

We are just over a week out from Usher‘s sure-to-be iconic Super Bowl performance. On the same day, the illustrious singer will drop his new album, Coming Home. Ahead of the album, Usher has shared a new single, “Ruin.”

The Afrofusion-influenced song features Usher smitten over a special woman. So much so, he can’t imagine the idea of answering the phone to someone else, or giving any of his time to another.

“Wake up in the mornin’ / A different girl be on my line / Constantly be callin’ every day, I still decline / See? This exactly what you did / You ruined me for everybody / You ruined me for everybody,” sings Usher on the song’s chorus.

Nigerian singer Pheelz gives the song a bit of international flair with a verse of his own, wondering how he became taken over by love.

“I be learnin’ tricks where you put the money / ‘Cause back then I was very lonely / I still am, I’m just tryna find peace every day / My heart is on holiday,” sings Pheelz on his verse.

You can listen to “Ruin” above.

Usher Announces Release of Ninth Album ‘COMING HOME’

Usher Announces Release of Ninth Album 'COMING HOME'

Usher has set the stage for a grand return with the upcoming release of his ninth studio album, COMING HOME, scheduled for Feb. 11, 2023. The album includes the already popular hit single “Good Good,” featuring 21 Savage and Summer Walker. Notably, the track stormed to #1 on Billboard’s R&B Digital Song Sales Chart upon its release and has continued to make waves at Urban, Rhythm, and Top 40 radio stations.

Good Good” also secured prominent placements, gracing the covers of Spotify’s Are & Be for a week and Apple Music’s R&B Now for two consecutive weeks. It further rose to the #1 position on Shazam in cities like Atlanta, Memphis, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and more.

Usher didn’t stop there. He surprised fans with “Boyfriend” and a mesmerizing video featuring the Emmy Award-winning entertainer Keke Palmer, creating a viral sensation that left an indelible mark on pop culture.

“We’ve put a lot of thought and creativity into this new album to tell a story that is open to interpretation and that will connect with people in different ways. I know this has been a long time coming for my fans and what I’ll say is that all good things come to those who wait. I hope you enjoy it once you hear it,” said Usher.

“USHER is one of the greatest superstars of our time. His undeniable talent, work ethic and charisma has sustained an incredibly successful career for over 30 years in the business, an achievement not to be taken lightly,” L.A. Reid adds. “Our history of working with each other made putting this body of work together a true passion project and I’m proud to be by his side as he reveals it to the world on February 11.”

The album will be launched under “mega,” a music collective founded by Usher and L.A. Reid, in collaboration with “gamma,” the artist-first multimedia platform led by CEO Larry Jackson and President Ike Youssef. This partnership will see gamma exclusively handle the distribution and marketing of all music released by mega.

“I’ve known USHER since we met as teenagers in 1997. I’ve counted him as a friend since then.  I’ve also watched him work indefatigably hard over the past thirty years to turn into the global superstar that he is today. Now, I could not be more excited to welcome him and the legendary L.A. Reid to gamma. with mega! USHER left the conventional system, bet on himself, and signed himself to himself.  Wow.  I hope that it’s an example for other major artists to come. USHER and L.A. are true music pioneers and their attention to detail for creative excellence is exceptional. We’ve been having so much fun already and I am truly excited for what’s to come.  It’s amazing to see the new music explode onto urban and pop radio in the U.S., and globally as well,” says Larry Jackson.

In conjunction with the album’s release, Usher’s Las Vegas residency, “Usher My Way,” celebrated its second sold-out year, setting social media abuzz with unforgettable moments. To add to the excitement, “Usher: Rendez-vous à Paris,” his European residency at La Seine Musicale, will kick off on Sept. 24 and run until Oct. 5.

Where Is Usher’s Super Bowl Halftime Show?

On Sunday, September 24, Usher simultaneously confirmed that his next album is called Coming Home and unveiled himself as the Super Bowl LVIII Apple Music Halftime Show performer. The cover art shows Usher holding a Georgia peach over the back of his neck.

“I’ve been coming home in a lot of different ways — the choice of music and reconnection to some of the people that I’ve worked with from my past and always wanted to work with,”Usher told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, adding, “In a sense, I’m coming home because I’m in that comfortable space. When you’re at home, you’re comfortable.”

Usher has become very comfortable in Las Vegas during his Usher: My Way The Vegas Residency, so, of course, he is performing Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024.

“It’s happening,” Usher told Lowe. “It has happened, ladies and gentlemen! Yes! We made it. […] It’s been a lot to keep secrets from my own kids at home. A very, very close-knit group of people knew, and we’re really excited about the entire thing. Obviously, a legacy, but more than anything, the fact that this is the most grand stage to ever play on.”

For fans who can’t bear to wait until February to see Usher, there are still plenty of Usher: My Way The Vegas Residency dates before it closes on December 2.

Coming Home will be Usher’s ninth LP and first original album release since Hard II Love in 2016. So far, the only released track is “Good Good” featuring 21 Savage and Summer Walker from August.

Coming Home is out 2/11/2024 via Mega/Gamma. Find more information here.
