Travis Scott Approves Of Coldplay’s Surprising “Goosebumps” Cover

Coldplay occupy an interesting place in the music world. They were once the biggest band in the world, and were afforded the critical acclaim that came with it. They were praised by fans and critics alike, and spent a brief moment in the mid-2000s as hip hop favorites. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin had songs with both Kanye West and JAY-Z, and remains close friends with the latter. Notable though these ties may be, nobody was expecting the British outfit to cover Travis Scott during a recent show.

Chris Martin took song requests during a live performance, and one of the fans in the audience asked him to sing “Goosebumps” by Travis Scott. “Goosebumps” is about ten billion light years away from the sound and lyrical content of most Coldplay music. Especially in the 2020s, when the band has settled in as the softest of rockers. Still, Chris Martin and company gave it a go. Martin ran around the stage and the rest of the band delivered a rousing, guitar-driven rendition of Travis Scott’s 2016 hit with Kendrick Lamar. Coldplay’s “Goosebumps” spread like wildfire on the internet, and Scott decided to weigh in on the cover via social media.

Travis Scott Dubbed Coldplay A “GOAT” Band

Travis Scott hopped on Twitter to confirm that he was a fan of Coldplay’s reimagining. “This got it,” he wrote, along with an emoji of a goat. Coldplay’s cool points may not be as plentiful as they were back in the day, but to have Scott co-sign them is a pretty big endorsement in 2024. The combination of Scott and Coldplay may sound odd in theory (or even in practice), but this is not the first time they have been musically linked.

Chris Martin told USA Today that his teenage daughters have been instrumental in keeping him plugged in to contemporary music. He credits Moses, 15, and Apple, 17, with exposing him to sounds that help to keep Coldplay fresh and musically adventurous. Travis Scott was one of the artists that Martin cited with regards to influence. “It’s cool when your kids start getting you into things,” he explained. “That’s how I got into Travis Scott or The 1975 or Olivia Rodrigo or whoever it may be.” Scott is currently working on a new album, so maybe fans will get to hear a proper Coldplay collab in the future.

JAY-Z Recalls Coldplay’s Chris Martin Convincing Him To Perform Iconic Glastonbury Set

JAY-Z says that he was initially hesitant to perform at Glastonbury back in 2008, when the festival was still known for being exclusively rock. Speaking with Gayle King for a new interview on CBS Mornings, the legendary rapper explained that Chris Martin of Coldplay convinced him to go through with the groundbreaking set. When the lineup when announced, JAY-Z’s inclusion was met with widespread criticism, including from Oasis’ Noel Gallagher. In response, Hov famously learned to play the band’s hit “Wonderwall” on guitar and performed it on stage.

“At one point, I was like why am I going there,” JAY-Z recalled. “If they don’t want me there, I don’t want to go. And Chris from Coldplay was instrumental on [convincing me to play]. He was like, ‘Jay, they love you. It’s just the old guard, they don’t know. It’s always been a rock festival.’ They didn’t have anything against me personally, it was just like, this is a rock festival, this is what it is. The world was changing.”

Elsewhere in his conversation with Gayle King, JAY-Z weighed in on the long-standing hypothetical debate as to whether a dinner with him or $500,000 is more valuable. “You gotta take the money,” he said confidently. “What I’ma say? You got all that [wisdom] in the music for $10.99! That’s a bad deal. I wouldn’t tell you to cut a bad deal. Take the $500,000, go buy some albums and listen to the albums — it’s all there! If you piece it together and really listen to the music for the words, for what it is, it’s all there. Everything that I said was gonna happen, happened. Everything that I said I wanted to do, I’ve done. There’s the blueprint. The blueprint, literally, to me and my life and my journey is there already.”

Lil Nas X, Demi Lovato, And Others Helped Pay Tribute To Elton John At The 2021 iHeartRadio Music Awards

Elton John has achieved a lot during his lengthy and illustrious career, so he was a natural choice to be given the iHeartRadio Icon Award at the 2021 iHeartRadio Music Awards last night. iHeartRadio went all out with honoring the legend, too, as they pulled out all the stops.

The award was presented to John by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who ran through some comedic fake facts about John. Lil Nas X then joined in to pay tribute. After the award presentation, there was a tribute performance from Demi Lovato, HER, and Brandi Carlile. HER started by playing “Bennie And The Jets’ at a piano, when then segued into Carlile performing “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.” Lovato wrapped things up with a rendition of “I’m Still Standing,” and John himself even joined in during the song’s climax.

Ahead of the performances, John also gave an acceptance speech and thanked the aforementioned artists for paying tribute to him. He also spoke about how stunned he was by American radio early in his career, saying, “When I first came to Los Angeles in 1970, radio was so important. I’d never heard radio in America before because I had never been here before, but it was just incredible to me. In England, we had one station. Over here, you’d have music coming out of the radio in all sorts of formats, all sorts of styles… I was a pig in sh*t, basically.”
