Bill Belichick Says Balls Were Underinflated For Patriots-Chiefs

Bill Belichick has confirmed that the balls used for placekicking during Patriots-Chiefs last weekend were underinflated. “We don’t have anything to do with it. Were we aware of it? Yeah, definitely. As I understand it, they were all the same. I don’t know what the explanation is. It was the same for both teams. You’d have to talk to the league about what happened on that. That part of it, they control all that,” Belichick said during his weekly press conference. The news was first reported by MassLive but any parallel to the infamous Deflate-gate scandal were dismissed as the issue affected both teams.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who missed his first field goal of the season in the first half against the Patriots, said he was informed of the deflation at halftime. “[They told me] the balls were a little deflated [and] they just let me know they pumped [them] up,” Butker said. Furthermore, he didn’t blame his miss on the state of the ball. “I think it was technique, one of those misfires that you wish you had back. My second kick of pregame warmup, I had a 38-yarder middle, and it kind of sliced off to the right like that. So it showed up, kind of, in warmup. I made a lot of big kicks with flatter balls, and shoot, even in college, I kicked a lot of flat balls,” Butker added.

Chiefs Kicker Explains Deflated Ball Situation

The NFL has declined to comment on underinflated kicking footballs in the first half of the Chiefs-Patriots game.

Furthermore, Butker revealed that a kicker can tell the different between balls in various states of inflation. “I didn’t notice anything on that opening kickoff and then second half, once you make that [field goal], you have the kickoff and you can feel the ball. And it was noticeably more pumped up. But again, cold weather is going to make the inflation go down. I’ve even had games where the bladder of the ball might pop or something, and maybe you feel it on kickoff and then you just ask for a different ball. So stuff like that happens and you just roll with it. I’ve made decent kickoffs with balls that maybe aren’t perfect 13 PSI indoor room temperature, but it’s just kind of the nature of the game. Sometimes that stuff happens,” Butker explained.

Despite Butker also calling the process “routine”, the situation has called back memories of Deflate-gate. The Belichick-led Patriots were fined $1M, docked two draft picks, and lost QB Tom Brady for four games after it was determined that they purposefully underinflated balls to gain a competitive advantage in the 2015 AFC Championship Game.

Patrick Mahomes Visibly Furious After Kadarius Toney’s Latest Gaffe

Patrick Mahomes was furious with Kadarius Toney after he the Chiefs’ wide receiver dropped a crucial pass that led to an interception during the team’s win over the New England Patriots on Sunday. The incident comes after Toney infamously surrendered a late-game offsides penalty in their 20–17 loss to the Bills in Week 14 that cost them the win. Mahomes was notably irritated with the officials after that game.

With 9:20 to play in the fourth quarter of this Sunday’s game, Toney dropped a wide-open pass and popped the ball up into the air where it was easily intercepted by a Patriots defender. At the time, Kansas City held a 27–10 lead. The game finished with the Chiefs winning 27-17.

Earlier in the weekend, the NFL fined Mahomes $50,000 and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid $100,000 for their complaints about officiating following Toney’s previous offsides mistake. Taylor Swift turned 34 in style, celebrating with close friend Blake Lively at various iconic locations in Manhattan. After arriving at The Box nightclub, the event became a bona fide A-list affair. However, conspicuously absent was Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce. Kelce was unable to get away from practice with the Chiefs, especially as the reigning Super Bowl champs have dropped three of their last four games.

Despite this, Kelce had previously said that he was planning something special for the singer’s birthday. “He’s arranged a very intimate, romantic dinner just for the two of them, and is also trying to pull off a semi-surprise party with the help of some of her closest friends,” sources told Page Six last week. It remains to be seen when and where that surprise will take place.

Instead, he traveled home with Swift in her white security van.

However, not everyone is as happy as the couple was during their party. The wild night out came just a few hours after the Chiefs lost 20-17 to the Bills. For some fans, it is not a good look for their QB and star tight end to be out partying after a tough loss. However, the loss didn’t appear to put a damper on the party, which was held at the Main Street Christmas Bar. Patrick Mahomes ranted about the officiating to Josh Allen following the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. While approaching him for a handshake on the field after the game, he yelled: “Wildest f*cking call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides in that moment, man. F*cking terrible.”

The complaints came after the game came down to an offsides call on Kadarius Toney in the final minutes. He had just scored what appeared to be, at the time, a game-winning touchdown after catching a lateral from Travis Kelce, but the refs called it back. Instead, the team lost 20-17 and fell to 8-5 on the season. They’ll have to fight for home-field advantage in the playoffs in the coming weeks.

Later in the night, Mahomes elaborated on why he was so upset while speaking with reporters. “I’ve played seven years (and) never had offensive offside called,” Mahomes said, as noted by ESPN. “That’s elementary school (stuff) we’re talking about. There was no warning throughout the entire game. Then you wait until there’s a minute left in the game to make a call like that? It’s tough. Lost for words. It’s tough. Regardless if we win or lose, just the end of another game and we’re talking about the refs. It’s just not what we want for the NFL and for football. What you want as a competitor is you practice all week to go out there and try to win and you want it to be about your team and that team and see what happens. You don’t want to be talking about this stuff after the game. I’m not worried about if there was a flag on the next player or whatever, not a flag. I want to go out there and play and then see what happens at the end, see what the score is and then I can live with the results.”

However, is this still the case? Swift has now attended five Chiefs games. The team has gone 4-1 in those games. Furthermore, Kelce has 513 yards and two touchdowns. However, it should be noted that more than half of Kelce’s yardage in these games stems from monster performances against the Broncos and Chargers.

In comparison, Kelce has just 274 yards in the five games Swift didn’t attend since they went public. While he also put up two touchdowns in that run, the Chiefs only went 3-2. So yes, Taylor Swift is still making Travis Kelce a better player. However, as mentioned above, his Swift-attended appearances are somewhat skewed by some absolutely huge single-game performances. The Chiefs are next in action against the Bills this weekend.

Meanwhile, Swift might be having other effects on Kelce too. A jersey worn by Kelce during a 2019 game in Mexico City has been sold at auction for $37K. “This is an all-time record for a Travis Kelce game-used item. He has always been popular but the success of the Chiefs, as well as the publicity he’s gotten around his relationship with Taylor Swift, has added to his popularity and awareness among collectors,” Goldin Auctions owner Ken Goldin told TMZ.

Elsewhere, MGK recently offered Kelce $500,000 to move back to Cleveland. “I’m sure you get asked this question behind closed doors a lot, but I would be remiss if due to the nature of our friendship and just as a Clevelander if I did not insert this question personally. It’s far from the first time Taylor Swift has attended one of Travis Kelce’s games this season. She first made an appearance at the Chiefs’ blowout win over the Bears back in September. Additionally, the star tight end recently traveled to Buenos Aires to attend the singer’s Eras Tour show in November. On stage, Swift switched up the lyrics to her hit song, “Karma,” to shout out her new boyfriend. The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians have condemned the behavior of a young boy who wore a ceremonial headdress and face paint to a Chiefs game last weekend. “We are aware that a young member of our community attended a Kansas City Chiefs game in a headdress and face paint in his way of supporting his favorite team. Please keep in mind that the decisions made by individuals or families in our community are their own and may not reflect the views of the broader tribal community. As a federally recognized tribe, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians does not endorse wearing regalia as part of a costume or participating in any other type of cultural appropriation,” Chairman Kenneth Kahn said in a statement to Front Office Sports.

The boy, who has not been named in media reports, was spotted wearing a headdress as well as black-and-red face paint to the Chiefs win against the Raiders in Las Vegas. While it was initially erroneously reported that the child was doing blackface, a great deal of outrage has been leveled at the child. Furthermore, many have turned against the Chiefs, who have chosen to remain silent on the incident.

The Chiefs, who have done work in recent years to try and steer their fanbase away from harmful stereotypes of Indigenous Peoples, have not commented on the matter.

Viral fan aside, the Chiefs were able to notch their eighth win of the year against the Raiders. Mahomes threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns while Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce combined for nearly 200 receiving yards. However, the Raiders, behind rookie QB Aidan O’Connell, kept things close for three-quarters of the game. However, despite trailing by just four entering the fourth quarter, the Chiefs took over, scoring ten unanswered points to take a 31-17 win. It was the bounceback that was needed after KC fell to the Eagles on Monday Night Football the week before.

Furthermore, Taylor Swift was spotted back in Kansas City for the first time in over a month. She was seen linking up with Travis Kelce after the conclusion of her tour stops in South America. However, Swift was not in attendance at the Raiders game, which was played in Vegas. Despite this, perhaps Swift will make her NFL return when the Chiefs return home for a game against the Bills on December 10. This week, the Chiefs travel to Wisconsin to take on Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers.
