Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN” Reaches 300 Weeks On Billboard 200

Kendrick Lamar’s 2017 album, DAMN, has spent 300 Weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, according to Chart Data. The album has never left the chart since its release.

Lamar dropped the project back in April 2017. It features production credits from James Blake, Steve Lacy, BadBadNotGood, Greg Kurstin, The Alchemist, and 9th Wonder, among others. As for guest vocals, Rihanna, Zacari, and U2 are all featured on the album.

DAMN debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with 603,000 album-equivalent units earned in its first week. It finished the year ranked as the number-one album on the Billboard 200 for 2017. Its popularity continued through the following year when it remained the thirteenth most popular album for 2018. The Recording Industry Association of America has since certified the album triple platinum.

The most popular tracks from DAMN include “Humble,” “DNA,” and “Love.”

The success of DAMN follows in line with the rest of Kendrick Lamar’s commercially successful work. His project, good kid, m.A.A.d city., recently became the first hip-hop studio album to spend 10 years on the Billboard chart. Additionally, his latest release, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, topped the Billboard 200 chart, opening with 295,000 album-equivalent units. The album also landed Lamar a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards.

Fans of Lamar will be able to catch him at Governor’s Ball, later this year. The iconic New York festival announced its full lineup for 2023, earlier this month. Other artists include Lil Nas X, Rina Sawayama, Pusha T, Lil Uzi Vert, Snail Mail, and more.

SZA’s “SOS” Hits 5th Straight Week At No. 1 On Billboard 200

SZA has reached a historic milestone with the success of her newest album, SOS. The project has now dominated the Billboard 200 for a fifth consecutive week, making it the first album to spend its first five weeks at No. 1 since Adele’s 30.

For the latest week, SOS moved 125,000 equivalent US album units. The figure represents a dropoff of less than 1% from the previous week.

The top five of the chart was rounded out by Taylor Swift’s Midnights (No. 2), Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains (No. 3), Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss (No. 4), and Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti (No. 5).

Additionally, SOS hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Songwriters chart for the first time. The achievement was made possible due to 15 SOS tracks charting on the Hot 100 chart. SZA responded to the impressive feat in a tweet shared on Saturday.

“I appreciate every milestone and accolade but THIS?” SZA tweeted. “As a writer [this] means so fucking much to me. I aspire to be a better writer everyday thank you WOW.”

Further promoting SOS, SZA recently released a new music video for the track, “Kill Bill.” Additionally, SZA will be embarking on the S.O.S. Tour next month alongside Omar Apollo. She’ll be kicking things off in Columbus, Ohio on February 21. The shows will wrap up in Los Angeles on March 22.

SZA released SOS back on December 9, 2022. The project features several high-profile guest appearances from Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers, Travis Scott, and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

NBA YoungBoy’s “I Rest My Case” Sells 30K Copies In First Week

One of hip-hop’s most prolific artists continues to rake in numbers with each new release. NBA YoungBoy’s latest album, I Rest My Case, sold 30,000 copies in its first week according to HITS Daily Double. While some fans thought it was too derivative to be considered great, there’s no denying it made a splash. In other sales news, Coke Boys 6 by French Montana and DJ Drama sold 21,000 units. Meanwhile, Real Boston Richey’s Public Housing, Pt. 2 sold 15,000 copies.

These albums joined the charts amid some of last year’s most enduring hot releases. SZA’s SOS still sits comfortably at the top, with smash hits like Midnights by Taylor Swift and Heroes & Villains by Metro Boomin close by. I Rest My Case cracked the top 10 at No. 9, falling between Lil Baby’s It’s Only Me at 8 and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House at 10.

Moreover, these numbers are relatively consistent with YB’s project output and the sales he makes from them. His previous mixtape Ma’ I Got A Family garnered 39,000 sales in its first week. While I Rest My Case netted three quarters of that, it also dropped during the holiday season with not as much promotion or hype behind it. However, it represents YB’s lowest sales since his career got off the ground. Through songs like “Black,” however, the Louisiana rapper definitely switched things up on this album with some new experiments in rage. So, even if it isn’t YoungBoy’s peak, he’s always pushing something forward with each project.

Also, it seems the 23-year-old took even more steps to change. Recently, he hopped on a FaceTime call with Kodak Black, seemingly squashing their beef. In addition, he reportedly got a marriage license with Jazlyn Mychelle, with whom he shares two children. As one of the most enigmatic, divisive, but undeniably influential rappers working today, seeing his career evolve is more gratifying than ten million copies.

What do you think of these first-week numbers from NBA YoungBoy, French Montana, and Real Boston Richey? Whatever the case, let us know in the comments down below. Also, as always, check back in with HNHH for the latest releases, discussions, and numbers in hip-hop.

SZA’s “SOS” Reaches Historic Milestone On Billboard 200

SZA has become the first female R&B singer to have their album spend its first four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in nearly 30 years. Her new project, SOS, is the first to do so since Janet Jackson’s janet in 1993.

The milestone was reached after SOS sold 125,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending January 5.

Outside of just R&B, SOS is also the first album by a woman to spend its first four weeks at No. 1 in a year, since Adele’s 30 was on top for its first six weeks.

SZA released SOS back on December 9, 2022. The project features guest appearances from Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers, Travis Scott, and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. It debuted with 318,000 equivalent album units sold. The project is SZA’s first album since 2017’s Ctrl.

One collaboration on the album that stood out for SZA was her work with Lizzo on “F2F.” While she’s not credited with a feature, Lizzo earned a writing credit on the track.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, SZA said of her time with Lizzo: “We just have so much fun together. And I feel like she gets me. She’s another person who has hella music tastes and doesn’t fit in anybody’s box of anything. She makes it seem like she doesn’t even care like she just does whatever she wants. And I just love being with her, just as a friend and hanging out. So whenever she comes to a studio, I just feel like, ‘Let’s drop into some bullshit.’”
