Shannon Sharpe Tears Into Kobe Bryant’s Parents For Selling Championship Rings

Shannon Sharpe has voiced his disgust that Kobe Bryant’s parents sold the late NBA legend’s championship rings. Sharpe found the decision distasteful, greedy, and disrespectful. Furthermore, Sharpe noted that his mother “wouldn’t get another dime from me ever again” if she sold any of his memorabilia. However, Sharpe finds himself at the opposite end of the issue to Gilbert Arenas. Arenas has defended the parents of Kobe Bryant from critics, such as Sharpe, who have taken issue with their decision to sell their son’s championship rings. “They broke. They got no money. You can’t be mad because they’re selling the rings. The money wasn’t left to them. They tryna eat,” Arenas argued. While Kobe’s will has never been made public, it is believed that almost all of his money went to his wife Vanessa.

Of course, that decision in itself has been criticized online. Dr. Umar took aim at Vanessa last year for not spending the money she inherited on the Black community. Umar pointed to a “sports initiative” that Bryant recently started with “six predominantly white colleges”. Umar’s anger came as a result of Bryant not “choosing a single HBCU”. Umar was referring to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation. In September, the foundation announced partnerships with UConn, USC, Kentucky, Oregon, Duke, and LSU. Of note – UConn was seen as the frontrunner in the recruitment of Gigi Bryant before her death.

Kobe Bryant Statue Outside Crypto.Com Arena Revealed To Contain Glaring Typos

Elsewhere, the recently unveiled statue of Kobe Bryant outside Crypto.com Arena has been revealed to contain several egregious typos. German basketball journalist Andre “Dre” Voigt published photos on social media showing that the engraving of the box score for Kobe’s 81-point game was riddled with errors. Jose Calderon’s name is misspelled as “Calderson”. Von Wafer’s name is misspelled as “Vom”. Finally, an instance of Coach’s Decision is misspelled as “decicion”. A subsequent report by ESPN noted that the Lakers had been made aware of the errors and would rectify them in the near future.

The statue, just the eighth in Lakers history, was unveiled on February 8 as part of a larger celebration to commemorate the team legend. The Lakers also wore their Kobe-designed Black Mamba jersey variant for the first time since Kobe’s death in early 2020.

Erica Donald, Wife Of Rams’ Aaron, Commissions Custom Super Bowl LVI Ring

Erica Donald, wife of LA Rams’ defensive star Aaron Donald, has made waves with what she hopes will become a new trend. Donald recently showed off a custom ring that is meant to emulate her husband’s Super Bowl LVI ring. Aaron’s ring comes the Super Bowl which he won back in 2021. Erica commissioned Moe Diamonds back in 2022 with the idea and the jeweler is more than happy with the results.

Per TMZ, “Moe says the ring is filled with VS-VVS diamonds, yellow and blue sapphires matching Rams colors. It also has an F-color marquise center diamond that looks just like a football. The iced-out item also features Donald’s initials, his No. 99 jersey number, the letters SBLVI, and palm trees to represent Los Angeles.” Both Moe and Erica are hoping that more partners of Super Bowl winners jump on the trend. Erica’s creation cost about $17,000 and includes around three carats of diamonds. “I created a lady’s Super Bowl ring,” Moe said. “Aaron Donald’s wife was the first person to receive it for the Super Bowl the Rams won.”

Can Donald Inspire More Bling In 2023?

2023 is a bounce-back year for Donald and the Rams. They went all-in to win the Super Bowl in 2021 and predictably collapsed in 2022, going 5-12. However, the team didn’t add a ton of talent in the offseason, with the most notable addition being TE Hunter Long. They have rookie starters at LG (Steve Avila) and OLB (Bryon Young). Additionally, they added a rookie backup for Matthew Stafford in Stetson Bennett.

For Donald, 2023 marks his age-32 season. He was limited to 11 games last season, the fewest games he has played in during his career. He still managed to record 49 tackles and five sacks. However, not many people have faith in the Rams. Bookmakers have the team winning around six games, with only the Cardinals performing worse than them in their division. Despite this, the steadily aging team will be eager to prove that their 2021 Super Bowl was not merely a flash in the pan and that they can in fact be an NFL contender.

Lakers Announced Championship Ring Policy

The NBA doesn’t have an official policy on who gets a Championship ring when a team wins the NBA Finals. Each franchise is allowed to determine its own rules of eligibility. While players may not be officially credited as an NBA champion by the league, getting a ring is the decision of the team.

This is important as it defines whether players cut or traded during the season are eligible to receive a ring if that team wins it all. The Lakers are currently having a great playoffs. They have already taken down the two-seed Grizzlies and sit one game away from eliminating the Warriors. But the Lakers also swung some pretty big trades this season. That leaves the question as to whether those players get rings.

All Lakers, Past And Present, Will Get Rings

The Lakers traded eight players during the regular season. The most notable departures were Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverly. Westbrook was dealt to the Jazz in the three-team trade that brought Jarred Vanderbilt to the Lakers. The same day, Beverly was sent to Orlando in a four-team trade that saw the Lakers acquire Mo Bamba. In total, the Lakers had nine players who are no longer on the roster. While eight were traded, a ninth player spent time on the Lakers’ roster before being sent to the team’s G-League affiliate.

However, the Lakers have confirmed that all players who played for the Lakers during the season would be eligible for a ring if the Lakers win the Finals. That would mean the Lakers would be giving out 26 player rings in the event that they win the Finals. Championship rings are valued at around $20,000 to $30,000. That means that to fulfill this promise, the Lakers will have to spend a minimum of $520,000 to ensure that everyone gets a ring. The end estimate sees that number balloon to $780,000. Do you think every player should get a ring? Let us know in the comments below. Follow all the latest sports news here at HotNewHipHop.
