It goes without saying that the January 6 Capitol Attack was a major moment in American history. According to Noah “40” Shebib, however, it may have also impacted the release of one of Drake’s albums. In an old clip featuring Drizzy’s frequent collaborator, he discusses the 2020 election, predicting that it’d be chaos if Biden won. For this reason, he said that he’d advise Drake to push back the release of Certified Lover Boy.
“I think it’s better almost for music if Trump wins because then life just sort of goes on as we know it right now, as terrible as that is,” 40 says in the clip. “But if Biden wins, then Trump has six weeks to get out of the White House. If Trump drags his feet getting out of the White House, that six weeks of him pardoning all of his boys, packing up his sh*t and leaving f*cking Washington? That’s gonna be the cr*ziest sh*t we’ve ever seen. And it might go south.”
“To drop an album within that six weeks to me is cr*zy,” he also added. “The attention on all that sh*t is so grave and it’s of grave importance, and it’s gonna be a pretty serious time in American history… I wouldn’t really want to get in the way of that.” Weeks after the January 6 Capitol Attack, Drake took to social media to announce that the release of Certified Lover Boy would be pushed back.
At the time, he told fans that “between surgery and rehab [his] energy has been dedicated to recovery.” It was eventually released several months later in September of 2021. What do you think of 40 seemingly predicting the January 6 Capitol Attack impacting Drake’s Certified Lover Boy release in a resurfaced clip? By now, everyone should know that Drakewas a busy man on Tuesday. Overall, this is because he came through with some new music for his fans. He dropped off three tracks and loads of unreleased behind-the-scenes footage. There was about 100 GB of footage, and as you can imagine, fans were excited. However, there have been some clips and pieces of media that have made some hip-hop observers less than enthused.
Case in point, we have the image below. It is an illustrated album cover for Certified Lover Boy. This is one of the options Drake had in mind, however, he ultimately went with the pregnant emoji cover instead. In the alternate cover, Drake can be seen operating a studio that is filled with naked women. It is a bit of a crudely drawn illustration, and as it turns out, fans are not feeling any of this, one bit. In fact, most fans are bringing up some of Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics from “Meet The Grahams.”
In the tweets down below, you can see various screenshots and quotes from the now infamous diss track. Others were simply astonished that Drizzy would want to make something so distasteful his album cover. Furthermore, there were some who were baffled that Drake would even want us to know this. Regardless, it is clear that the artist has been making some polarizing decisions as of late. Sure, the new songs are good. However, the BTS footage has left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

While not everyone needs to take a side in the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, it took over too many corners of pop culture for folks not to ask everyone they could about it. Apparently, the battle even captivated automated A.I. tech, because even Siri took somewhat of a stance on the showdown between these two MCs. Moreover, various clips have gone viral as of late of people asking Siri to play Drizzy’s Certified Lover Boy on Spotify, and instead playing K.Dot’s “Not Like Us” due to its… Well, you know the line it’s referencing. Still, this writer tested it out and it went right to CLB‘s opener “Champagne Poetry,” so either it’s an inconsistent response or someone fixed this glitch ASAP to not implicate Apple in the rap battle.
Jokes aside, it’s curious to see all the creative ways in which the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef has been referenced by other media and communities. For example, following Canada’s loss to Argentina, the Latin American fútbol team posted some social media content referencing “Not Like Us.” Speaking of sports, USA Basketball also played the West Coast banger after they beat Canada, so it looks like the country’s in for a surefire clap-back whenever they lose anything. It’ll make their victories all the more sweet, but it’s admittedly wild that this song will join the athletics canon.
Also, Kendrick Lamar and Drake are trading blows in plenty of other areas. While “Not Like Us” and other Kendrick material is performing incredibly well commercially and even besting The Boy in some areas, he still has the most streamed rapper title over the Compton lyricist. Numbers aren’t everything, but in this war of attrition, they need all the points on their board they can get. We wonder if they tried this Siri thing, too…
Meanwhile, fans are going wild with theories that Drake will drop something against Kendrick Lamar soon, or that Kendrick is releasing a whole new album. Sadly, these rumors are just rumors at press time, although folks are ready for some more content to go wild over. Either of these releases would certainly provoke that reaction, so hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve heard from these MCs in 2024. We would prefer if they didn’t go for a Round Two, and instead just hope they’re energized to put this effort into their music rather than sending Siri an angry letter.
The American public is more invested in the ongoing Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef than the upcoming presidential election. Unlike the upcoming presidential election, however, the Drake-Kendrick beef has a clear winner. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” ostensibly ended it, but the “Not Like Us” victory lap is relentless.
Now, even Siri has chosen a side — emphasizing the certified loser of this rap rapture.
HipHopDX’s Jeremy Hecht recorded himself asking Siri to play Drake’s Certified Lover Boy on Spotify, and instead, Kendrick Lamar whispers, “Psst, I see dead people,” which is the intro to “Not Like Us.”
As is my journalistic duty, I also asked Siri to play Certified Lover Boy, Drake’s September 2021 album, on Spotify, and Siri played “Not Like Us.” However, the second time I tried it, Siri did play Certified Lover Boy, so it would appear that Siri’s pettiness is limited to one attempt — or Spotify corrected the glitch. Hilarious, nonetheless.
“I mean, love Drake, love Drake, you always could play him,” DeRozan told Fox 40’s Sean Cunningham in response to whether Drake songs can be played during his games with the Sacramento Kings, his new team. “Kendrick’s been a friend of mine — family, damn near family for a long time, for a while. We from the same city, grew up damn near in the same neighborhood. So, it’s always been there. It hasn’t always been publicized, but that’s basically family.”
Ayesha Curry finally gave her reaction to being shouted out by Drake on his 2020 track, “Race My Mind”. “I think I was dumbfounded. I just – it’s one of those things. But that’s our family, so I think I was appreciative that they respect me so much that they think I’m a great wife. So I was appreciative,” Curry told Watch What Happens Live this week. The track, featured on Certified Lover Boy, saw Drake essentially refer to Curry as “goals” as he rapped about refusing to marry a woman because she wasn’t Curry.
Ayesha and her husband Steph are massive Drake fans. Drake once covered a late fine for Steph after he, Drizzy, and Draymond Green missed a curfew for the team plane. Meanwhile, the Currys were spotted at an It’s All A Blur tour stop in New York City. “I got my brother in the building tonight. They say we look alike. Make some noise for my brother Steph Curry in the building one time. And of course, the lovely Ayesha Curry. And mama bear, you know,” Drake announced to the crowd after spotting the couple.
Elsewhere, Curry recently revealed that she is pregnant with the couple’s fourth child. She revealed the news during an appearance in Sweet July magazine. Curry said she and Steph thought they were done having kids but had a change of heart last year. Their most recent child was born in 2018. “Last year, we looked at each other and agreed we wanted to do this again,” Curry wrote in the article.
Furthermore, Curry is hoping for a more laidback pregnancy this time around. “I was really stubborn in my earlier pregnancies. And that hurt me in the end. It made things really hard on me. I had to learn to put my pride aside and realize it was okay to take help, to have people around me help and to not shy away from it. I know I can’t do this alone — it truly takes a village,” Curry said.
Drake is now letting you take For All The Dogs along with you in fashion. Hitting Drake Related, The Boy released merch items for the album, including t-shirts and hoodies. Dropping on his birthday, an Instagram message accompanying the release reads, “More life, more everything. Happy Birthday to The Boy.”
Drake’s For All The Dogs took the No. 1 spot on Billboard behind a 402,000 first week in sales, according to Luminate. The album is Drake’s 13th No. 1 and the fourth-largest total of the year for an album.
For All The Dogs‘ songs were streamed 514.01 million times, the largest streaming week of 2023 for any album and the fourth-largest ever. Drake holds the distinction of holding four of the top five spots for the largest streaming ever.
Drake is now behind JAY-Z as far as No. 1s. Hov has 14, and the chart leader is The Beatles with 19. Taylor Swift is behind Drake at 12.
In other Drake album news, nearly two years after he removed Certified Lover Boy from Grammy consideration, Drake is ready to put his best foot forward with Her Loss.
According to Billboard, Drake has submitted his collaborative album with 21 Savage to the Album of the Year and Best Rap Album categories. In addition, “Rick Flex” and “Spun Bout U” have been added to the record of the year, song of the year, and other considerations.
According to Variety, Drake withdrew his 2022 Grammy nominations almost two years ago. Drake and his management reportedly decided, and the Recording Academy honored his request. There was not direct reason for wanting to be removed.
Drake’s Certified Lover Boy was nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance for “Way 2 Sexy,” which featured Young Thug and Future.
The Recording Academy will not add a replacement for Drake, instead opting to move forward with just four nominees in those categories.
The year before, Drake spoke out against the GRAMMYs while supporting The Weeknd.
“I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artist that exist now and the ones that come after,” he wrote in his Instagram Story. “It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just won’t change their ways. The other day I said @theweeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way. This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up overtime and pass on to the generations to come.”

This new decade has seen Drake continue to be a dominant force in the music industry as he consistently shares new music, topping the charts and breaking streaming records in the process. He recently dropped his eighth studio album, For All the Dogs just in time to conclude his It’s All A Blur Tour of North America. The new record follows a trilogy of albums, including the collaborative Her Loss with 21 Savage, last year’s Honestly, Nevermind, and 2021’s Certified Lover Boy. A new Drake release is guaranteed to divide listeners, and it appears that the reception of For All the Dogsis no different. Despite these mixed opinions, Drizzy is not afraid to clap back.
Drake’s output so far this decade has been prolific, releasing at least one full-length album each year. The quick turnaround between projects is commendable and is deserving of some time off. In a recent episode of his Sound 42 radio show, Drake announced that he will be taking a break from music, “For maybe a year or so.” The Canadian superstar cited stomach problems and his overall health as reasons for his temporary hiatus. To commemorate Drake’s prolific run, the release of For All the Dogs, and his well-deserved break, we are ranking his albums since Certified Lover Boy from worst to best. Take a look at the list below.
4. For All the Dogs (2023)
Drake’s latest album has not been out for very long, so comparing it to his other albums may seem early. While it is still fresh in our minds, For All the Dogs does not stack up against Drake’s previous releases. The album’s bloated tracklist is held back by its runtime and features, with some exceptions. J. Cole, SZA, PARTYNEXTDOOR, and Bad Bunny contributed standout performances that made for memorable collaborations.
The tracklist has bright moments, but For All the Dogs is ultimately uneven. Lyrically and vocally, Drake has his high points, but there are instances where his performances fall flat. It is a prime example of how Drake can be a victim of his own success with an album that caters to every style. For All the Dogs is still brand new, so only time will tell how it ages in the span of Drake’s discography.
3. Her Loss – Drake & 21 Savage (2022)
Drake has recruited 21 Savage for every album since Certified Lover Boy, so it was only right for the two to lock in for an entire joint album. Their collaborative effort, Her Loss, reinvigorated Drake’s rapping skills as he and 21 brought out the best in each other. While the two certainly have chemistry, it does not always translate to making good songs. The project can sometimes be disjointed, but there are plenty of gems on Her Loss.
Songs like “Rich Flex,” “Hours in Silence,” and “Spin Bout U” displayed the duo’s irresistible synergy. Savage held his own, but Drake was the star of the show as his versatility shined throughout the tracklist. His catchy melodies and skillful bars commanded the songs, not to mention “Middle of the Ocean” is arguably one of Drake’s best songs of the decade so far. Her Loss excited with its highlights, but also felt monotonous at times. For that reason, it sits at No. 3 on the list.
2. Certified Lover Boy (2021)
Certified Lover Boy is far from Drake’s best work but has many redeeming qualities. The album’s lengthy tracklist may be inconsistent, but plenty of highlights exist. Its worst moments do not detract from the best tracks that carry the album’s quality. Certified Lover Boy includes one of Drake’s best intro tracks with “Champagne Poetry,” as well as quality collaborations with JAY-Z, Travis Scott, and Tems. Drake sang his heart out with Future and Ty Dolla $ign and reunited with Lil Wayne and Rick Ross for “You Only Live Twice.” The overblown tracklist and overall sequence of For All the Dogs is reminiscent of Certified Lover Boy, but the latter trumps the former with its strongest tracks.
1. Honestly, Nevermind (2022)
Fans were caught off guard with the surprise announcement of Honestly, Nevermind, but even more with the album’s musical direction. Drake primarily sang on his seventh studio album, with the exception of certain tracks. He experimented with moody house music, Baltimore club, and R&B. It made for a unique listening experience distinct from other Drake albums. Honestly, Nevermind displayed Drake’s effortless knack for creating catchy melodies. He may work well with others, but there were no features besides 21 Savage on “Jimmy Cooks.”
Honestly, Nevermind is a concise body of work and a focused effort with a cohesive artistic direction. It is free of moments on For All the Dogs and Certified Lover Boy, where he occasionally sounded creatively stagnant. The album saw Drake exploring uncharted territory, which is what made it such an exciting listen and undoubtedly his best release out of his most recent run.
