Trap music continued its impressive run of dominating the charts, and established itself as the most popular subgenre of Hip Hop. However, the sonic landscape of rap continued to evolve. Moreover, there was a rise in experimentation in production techniques, as well as innovative beats. Post Malone – “Psycho” Ft. Ty Dolla Sign

2018 continued Post Malone’s reign as far as rap hits go. “Psycho,” the trap-infused track, was released to overwhelming mainstream success. Yung Miami Talks Reality Show And Podcast During VMA Interview

The VMAs took place last night and plenty of celebrities were in attendance. That meant that reporters were able to catch up with some of the biggest stars in music. That’s exactly what Billboard did with Yung Miami when they got the chance to ask her about a number of topics. “It means everything… to be a girl from the hood out here just enjoying the VMAs,” she begins the interview before being asked a series of more specific questions.

When the interviewer asks Yung Miami what she has next after a big 2023 so far, she answers right away. “I got a reality show coming out, the City Girls dropping an album, I got a new podcast.” Clearly, people looking for more Miami won’t have to look far as she’s got a lot on the way. When she’s asked if she ever imagined being in this position, it nearly brings her to tears. She talks about crying the morning of the show and expresses how thankful she is to be in this position. Despite the reveals, the biggest storyline for Yung Miami following the VMAs was something else entirely. The very revealing outfit choice she made left her vulnerable to a good bit of pregnancy speculation. Those rumors increased exponentially when Miami herself retweeted one of the posts identifying her reported baby bump. While her reasons for retweeting the post are unclear most fans think she was merely feeding fan speculation as a joke.

City Girls have released 4 new songs this year. The first was “Act Bad” with Diddy and Fabolous. The track became somewhat of a summer anthem racking up over 4 million streams since its release. By 2015, rap music was as dynamic as ever, boasting a wide variety of hits. The mid-2010s took the genre to even greater mainstream fame and kept it securely situated. Many artists had begun to achieve a level of impact and influence never before seen in Hip Hop. The year was also an unforgettable one for Drake, who quickly began to prove his versatility. Furthermore, the marriage between pop and rap waxed even stronger.

A few new talents broke out as well, announcing their arrival on the scene in grand fashion. Some of such rappers include Vince Staples, Fetty Wap, and duo Rae Sremmurd, all of whom released their debut studio albums in 2015. Additionally, trap music became even more popular, with new acts bursting onto the scene. As far as chart success, only six rap hits made it to the top spot in 2015. 2014 proved to be a remarkable year of hits for women in rap. Most notably, Iggy Azalea joined Nicki Minaj as the only other woman in hip-hop to top the charts in the decade at the time. As a result of the success of her single “Fancy,” she ended the year as Billboard’s year-end number-one song. Besides these two, featured acts: Rita Ora, Kesha, and Charli XCX enjoyed success on the charts.

Boundaries were being pushed even further, and the versatile musical palates of rap enthusiasts were introduced to new and exciting sounds. Trap music continued to be a dominant subgenre in rap, with pop collaborations also taking center stage. Furthermore, in 2014, the coveted top spot was claimed by only seven hits. There were also no re-emergences of any songs that year, unlike “Holy Grail” the year prior.

Nicki Minaj – “Only” Ft. Drake, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown

6. Chance The Rapper – “No Problem” Ft. Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz

Chance The Rapper had achieved a massive amount of success as an independent artist but took things to a new level with his Grammy-award-winning mixtape, Coloring Book. After much fuss was made about the dearth of rap No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023, the first rap song of the year has topped the chart, breaking the drought at 54 weeks. Best of all, the song to finally bring hip-hop back to the mountaintop came from an artist who has gone to extreme lengths in the fight for her hip-hop credibility: Doja Cat.

Her Dionne Warwick-sampling single “Paint The Town Red” — which saw her rapping more than singing for the first time since her debut album in 2018 — has topped this week’s Hot 100 chart, giving her her second No. 1 after “Say So” reached No. 1 on the chart dated May 16, 2020 (thanks in large part to a guest spot from Nicki Minaj, giving Nicki her first-ever No. 1 as well, and an NSFW promise Doja later reneged on). Interestingly, the last rap song to go No. 1 was Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl” on the chart dated August 22, 2022.

In the year leading up to the rollout for her upcoming fourth studio album, Scarlet, Doja joked that her new album would be entirely rap, then entirely R&B, then that it would be punk or inspired by rave culture. She ultimately attributed all these changes of heart to ADHD, but she’s also been a bit of a stylistic chameleon all along, even going as far as deriding her older albums for being more marketable and not as authentic to who she is.

Considering she came up under the tutelage of Project Blowed vets like Verbs in Los Angeles, hip-hop is part of her DNA — and clearly the part she’s most passionate about expressing right now. It looks like that passion is paying off.

Additionally, Chance The Rapper’s Acid Rap placed him at the forefront of Hip Hop stars to watch. 2013 also saw Jay-Z reaffirming his legend status with the iconic album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, which expectedly housed impressive rap hits. Young Money Crowned “Most Dominant” Rap Label Based On Billboard Chart Figures

Hip Hop All Day has crowned Young Money as the most dominant rap label, based on its artists’ cumulative figures on the Billboard Hot 100. Drake leads the way with 5,770 weeks, followed by Lil Wayne at 2671. Furthermore, Nicki Minaj has 1869. Combined, the three Young Money artists have 10,310 weeks or 197.7 years on the Billboard charts.

Only three other rappers have over 2000 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 – Eminem (3029), Kanye West (2327), and Future (2019). Meanwhile, a handful of other artists join Minaj in having at least 1500 weeks on the charts. They are, Jay-Z (1942), Kendrick Lamar (1700), and Lil Baby (1573). Furthermore, Hip Hop All Day charted artists to everyone with over 1000 weeks on the chart. The rest of list is rounded out by J.Cole, Travis Scott, Tupac, Ludacris, Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, Snoop Dogg, 21 Savage, T.I., and NBA YoungBoy.

Birdman Predicts Young Money Concert Would Be Huge

However, it’s not the first time in recent weeks that people have testified to the power of Young Money. “So you know with Nicki and Drake, that shit about $15-20million a show,” Birdman stated. “Big facts. A lot of [money on the table]. $4-5million a show. We’ve been offered about $4-5million a show. That’s without Drake and Nicki,” Birdman told The 85 South Show last month. Of course, it’s been over a decade since Young Money performed and the three anchors of the label have gone on to do wildly different. But where there’s hope, there’s a chance.

Of course, all three have major releases that either just dropped or will drop very soon. Wayne just released “Kat Food”, one of several singles he’s put out over the last few months. It’s unclear if he’s building towards an album but still, new music is always great. Meanwhile, Drake and Nicki are both building toward album releases. Drake will drop For All The Dogs very soon, at least according to Drizzy himself. Meanwhile, Nicki has Pink Friday 2 on the way later this year. With these major releases on the way, that chart dominance of Young Money will only grow.
