Caitlin Clark & Iowa Win Big Ten Title In OT Thriller

Iowa has captured their third consecutive Big Ten title in a wild OT thriller against Nebraska. Trailing by 11 at the half, Iowa needed a huge 30-point second half from Caitlin Clark to force OT. In the extra period, the Hawkeyes were finally able to pull away from the relentless Huskers. With the win, Iowa has likely captured a No. 1 seeding during next week’s Selection Sunday. Iowa had a fairly easy run to the title game, beating Penn State and Michigan, both by double digits.

Meanwhile, Chattanooga also punched their ticket to the Big Dance with a 69-60 win over UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference. The Mocs and Hawkeyes joined UT Martin, who punched their ticket on Friday. However, the Skyhawks did so despite losing their OVC title game. As Southern Indiana, the OVC conference champions, are still in their transitional period to D1, they are ineligible for NCAA postseason tournaments.

Kamilla Cardoso Sinks First-Ever Three-Pointer To Save South Carolina, Sports World Goes Wild

However, Clark’s heroics and Iowa’s comeback are only the latest piece of viral basketball this weekend. South Carolina remained undefeated as senior Kamilla Cardoso hit her first career three-pointer to give the Gamecocks a 74-73 win over Tennessee in the SEC Conference Tournament semifinals. South Carolina had squandered a 13-point halftime lead and were staring down their first loss in almost a year when the Brazilian star hit her miraculous buzzer-beater. She was immediately mobbed by her teammates, disappearing under a pile of bodies. South Carolina will face Angel Reese and LSU later today in the tournament final.

The sports world was quick to react to Cardoso’s heroics. “Oh My God!!! What a game!!! #kamillacordoso with the game winning 3 with 1.1 seconds on the clock!! Wow!! What A Shot!!! This was awesome to watch!!!” wrote NFL legend Terrell Owens. “Kamilla you shoot now!? 😱 where was this in AAU,” wrote WNBA star and Cardoso’s former AAU teammate Rhyne Howard.

Caitlin Clark & Iowa Seemingly Gifted Big Ten Title As Maryland Stuns Ohio State

Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes are now heavy favorites to win the Big Ten’s automatic bid to March Madness. The major obstacle in the team’s way was conference regular-season champions Ohio State. However, the Buckeyes were stunned in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament by eight-seeded Maryland, who had gone 9-9 in the conference regular season. Prior to the upset victory in Minneapolis, Maryland had lost both their games to the Buckeyes this season. The Buckeyes looked nothing like the two-loss team that had dominated the Big Ten all year as the lost by 22 to the Terrapins. Junior Shyanne Sellers had a game-high 25 points for Maryland.

Furthermore, a deep run by Iowa, who have won back-to-back conference tournaments, should secure the Hawkeyes a No. 1 seed for March Madness. However, they need to avoid being upset themselves. Their journey to the conference final sees them take on Penn State and the winner of Michigan/Indiana. If they reach the final, they will face Maryland, Nebraska, or Michigan State.

Caitlin Clark Focused On Iowa, Not WNBA

Meanwhile, Despite declaring for the WNBA last week, Clark is focused solely on the rest of her time at Iowa. “Obviously, my focus is here. My goal is to win a national title, that’s plain and simple. And to be honest, I’m not really looking that far ahead to the WNBA.” Clark said. Furthermore, Clark said that she announced her decision so it didn’t distract from the regular-season finale against Ohio State. “They need to be celebrated the same way that I will be. I want it to just be a celebration of what we’ve been able to give to this program and what we’ve been able to do,” Clark said of her teammates.

Furthermore, Clark said that she is simply looking forward to seeing out the rest of her college career. “And I think that’s my biggest focus going into the rest of the year: Just smile, have fun, play free. That’s really when I play my best basketball, so I’m excited,” Clark said.

Big Ten Schools Call For Action On Michigan Sign-Stealing

Representatives from 13 of the schools in college athletics’ Big Ten Conference have urged the conference commissioner to take action against the 14th school, Michigan. This comes after a wide-ranging and elaborate sign-stealing operation was exposed and is now being investigated by the NCAA. Five sources familiar with the call told ESPN that the coaches demanded immediate action against Michigan. “Collectively, the coaches want the Big Ten to act — right now. What are we waiting on? We know what happened,” one source summarized. As a result, the Conference scheduled a call between the commissioner and school athletic directors for later in the week.

Coaches reportedly used “tainted”, “fraudulent”, and “unprecedented” to describe Michigan’s actions. Furthermore, coaches pointed to Michigan’s 22-1 conference record over the last three years, the period of time that the sign-stealing operation has reportedly been in place, as proof of its effect on the conference. “People don’t understand the seriousness of it. How it truly impacted the game plan. To truly know if it’s a run or a pass, people don’t understand how much of an advantage that was for Michigan,” another source said.

Michigan Sign-Stealing Operation Explained

The Michigan sign-stealing operation was first reported two weeks ago by Yahoo! and has steadily grown in scope. The investigation has centered on Connor Stalions, a long-time staffer within the football program. Stalions is found to have bought tickets to 35 games at 17 venues over the last three years. This includes 12 Big 10 schools. While in attendance, Stalions is believed to have recorded the sidelines in order to capture footage of a team’s play-calling signs. While sign-stealing is not prohibited, in-person scouting of future opponents and sign-stealing via electronic means is banned under NCAA rules. Stalions is currently on paid suspension from his position.

Furthermore, a former Division III coach has claimed that Stalions paid him to record footage at least one game involving a future Michigan opponent. While most of Michigan’s coaching staff has denied knowledge of the sign-stealing operation, the school said that it is cooperating with the Big Ten and NCAA in their investigations. Michigan are currently 8-0 and lead the Big Ten East. Their season will likely be decided with a matchup against Ohio State in the regular season finale.

Oregon And Washington Reportedly Agree To Join The Big Ten

The Pac-12 has reportedly lost two more members. Oregon and Washington have reportedly agreed to join the Big Ten in 2024. The news came less than an hour after it was reported that Oregon was preparing to reject the Big Ten’s offer. According to ESPN, the two schools will formally apply on August 4. The conference will hold an admission vote later on the same day. If all goes to plan, the Pac-12 could be down to just four members for 2024 by the end of the week.

The exodus from the prestigious west coast conference began last year when USC and UCLA announced that they would be moving to the Big Ten in 2024. They were followed by Colorado, who last month announced that they would be joining the Big 12 in 2024. Earlier this week, Arizona also announced they were in the process of finalizing their own move to the Big 12. Arizona State and Utah are expected to also join the Big 12. This may especially be the case in light of the news concerning Oregon and Washington.

Pac-12 All But Dead With Oregon And Washington Departures

If all deals play out as expected, four teams would be left in the Pac-12. Cal, Stanford, Oregon State, and Washington State would likely be expected to find new conferences. The other alternative will be to be folded into the Mountain West. The Pac-12 would not be able to rebuild as its primary target, the Mountain West, has a $32 million exit fee for any programs that try to leave before 2025. Meanwhile, while the West Coast Conference could restock the Pac-12’s basketball schools, it is not currently a football conference.

Meanwhile, the collapse of the Pac-12 moves college football ever closer to a “superconference” model. Under the predicted moves, the Big Ten will have 18 teams in 2024 while the SEC would have 16 and the Big 12 would have 15. Very quickly, the major footballing powers are being amalgamated into a handful of loaded conferences irrespective of geography. While there is still a chance that things could fall through, it appears that 2023 may be about to become the final season of the Pac-12.

Jordan Bohannon Banks Insane Desperation Last Minute 3-pointer, sending Iowa to Big 10 Final

Jordan Bohannon

It was the shot heard around the world- or at least throughout the midwest. With a tied score of 77, the Big 10 semifinal game between Indiana and Iowa appeared to be heading into overtime. However, with just 1.1 on the clock, sixth-year senior guard Jordan Bohannon tossed the ball from well past the three point line in what appeared to be a wild desperation shot. To the amazement of fans, he sunk the shot, sealing the win for Iowa 80-77.

The winning shot came in the face of a strong Indiana defense that appeared to be relentlessly pressing Bohannan, who happens to be Iowa’s all-time leader in assists, games played and 3-pointers. The Hoosiers had appeared to dominate the game throughout the second half until Iowa made a late fourth quarter rally.fourth-quarter.

Following the game, Bohannon attempted to articulate his feelings about the game-winning shot to the Des Moines Register as “something that can’t even be put into words,” saying, “you dream about it as a little kid, throwing up shots in the backyard, throwing up shots at the local YMCA when you’re a kid and hoping one day you get to this stage. And I was running in circles, I didn’t know where to go because I was so excited. To be in that moment, it’s been so much fun.”

The win will send Iowa (25-9) to its first Big Ten Tournament final since 2006. They will face No. 3 seed Purdue in the Big Ten title bout on Sunday.
