Lil Nas X Blasts BET Awards Over Snub
The 2022 BET Awards nominations were announced today and Lil Nas X was nowhere to be found.
In a series of since-deleted tweets, the rapper called out the network for snubbing him once again despite the success of his debut album Montero, which spawned hit singles like “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” with Jack Harlow.
“thank you bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again,” he tweeted before adding, “black excellence!”

When someone questioned why he deserved to be nominated, Nas clapped back with receipts. “idk maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year & a critically acclaimed album,” he said. “i feel like that should’ve helped me a bit.”
Another person claimed that he shouldn’t be eligible because he is a “pop artist,” to which he responded, “no offense but u are literally of caucasian persuasion and trying to school me on an award show i’ve watched my entire childhood + it’s not the hip hop awards + they have a pop category.”
According to Nas, the snub is not just about him. “doesn’t even have to be me nominated,” the openly gay rapper wrote on Wednesday, which also happens to be the first day of Pride Month. “i just feel like black gay ppl have to fight to be seen in this world and even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible.”
While he may not be attending the show, he joked that he will be “selling fish plates outside of the bet awards this year.”
This is the second consecutive year that Nas has been snubbed. He was nominated for Best New Artist in 2020 but lost.
Nas delivered one of the most-talked-about moments of last year’s BET Awards when he performed “Montero.” In 2019, he performed his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus.
While Nas was shut out, his “Scoop” collaborator Doja Cat leads the 2022 BET Awards with six nominations, while Drake and Ari Lennox earned the second most nods with four each. Other multiple nominees include Future, Young Thug, Baby Keem, Silk Sonic, Kanye West, and more.
Hosted by Taraji P. Henson, the 2022 BET Awards will air live on Sunday, June 26 at 8 p.m. from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Doja Cat Leads The 2022 BET Awards Nominations While Ari Lennox And Drake Are Tied For Second
The nominations for the 2022 BET Awards have been announced and Doja Cat is the top nominee. She’s nominated for six awards, including two awards — video of the year and best collaboration — for “Kiss Me More” featuring SZA, as well as best female R&B/pop artist, best female hip-hop artist, BET Her for “Woman,” and album of the year for Planet Her.
Meanwhile, Ari Lennox and Drake are tied for second place with four nominations apiece, while third place is an absolute logjam with Baby Keem, Chloe, Future, H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Baby, Mary J. Blige, Silk Sonic, and Tems all nominated for three awards each. Lennox is head-to-head with Doja in all of her nominations, including best female R&B/pop artist, BET Her, and video of the year, for which she’s nominated twice (for her own “Pressure” and her appearance on Summer Walker’s “Unloyal“).
In addition to Planet Her, the album of the year category includes Drake’s Certified Lover Boy, H.E.R.’s Back of My Mind, the deluxe edition of Jazmine Sullivan’s Heaux Tales, Silk Sonic’s An Evening With Silk Sonic, and Tyler The Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost.
The BET Awards are set to air live Sunday, June 26, at 8 pm ET from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Nelly Will Be Honored With The ‘I Am Hip-Hop’ Award At The 2021 BET Awards
Nelly has been a reigning force in the hip-hop and pop arenas for decades now. Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. first signed to Universal Records in 1999, and kicked off his solo career with 2000’s unstoppable classic Country Grammar, quickly becoming a household name and scoring multiple hits like “Ride Wit Me” and the title track. Then, his 2002 album Nellyville was arguably even more commercial with the massive “Hot In Herre” (which still gets played at clubs) and the ubiquitous “Air Force Ones.”
All this to say, for the last twenty years Nelly has been a dominant presence in the music industry, so the BET’s decision to honor him this year with the “I Am Hip-Hop” award is right on the money. In full circle fashion, Nelly delivered the award to LL Cool J ten years ago, and is now in a position to receive it himself. Pas honorees include Grandmaster Flash in 2006, Scarface in 2015, Lil Wayne in 2018, and Master P in 2020.
“I am honored to receive this award and humbled to be in such great company of past artists who have received this award,” Nelly said in a press release. “I have been blessed to work with some incredible people in my career, making 22 years go by in the blink of an eye. This award isn’t just about Nelly; it is about my fans, BET, and the people that continue to support me and allow me to do what I love to do.”
The BET Awards will air on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, at 9 PM on BET. Tune in then to see Nelly accept his award.
