Big Daddy Kane, Kid ‘N Play, MC Lyte, The Sugarhill Gang, Uncle Luke, Warren G, 69 Boyz, and Yo-Yo will appear. Going deeper into the ’90s and 2000s, stars include Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Master P, Trick Daddy, Trina, DJ Unk, the Ying Yang Twins, E-40, Soulja Boy, the Fast Life Yungstaz (F.L.Y.), and Ja Rule. Finally, there are a few more modern names, namely Chief Keef and Tyga, as part of the 50th anniversary event. It’s the 50th birthday of hip-hop, and BET is pulling out all the stops to celebrate at the BET Awards, enlisting Golden Era pioneers like Big Daddy Kane, Kid ‘N Play, MC Lyte, The Sugarhill Gang, Uncle Luke, and Warren G along with platinum-era all-stars such as E-40, Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Master P, Remy Ma, Trick Daddy, Trina, and the Ying Yang Twins. Blog faves like Chief Keef, Soulja Boy, and Tyga are in there, too.
Of this year’s nominees, Coco Jones, Doechii, GloRilla, and Lil Uzi Vert have been included among the performers with more to be announced. GloRilla and Drake lead all nominees, with six for Glo and seven for Drake, including Album Of The Year nods for both, Best Collaboration for both, and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and Best New Artist nods for GloRilla. The show is scheduled to air live on Sunday, June 25 at 8pm ET, and with BET sending out announcements about the show as normal, it doesn’t look like the WGA writers’ strike will have too great an effect on that.

BET announced on April 26 that the BET Awards 2023 would “return live from Los Angeles” to “celebrate five decades of hip-hop through the live telecast on BET.” The press release noted, “BET Awards has been the No. 1 cable award show among all adults 18-49 for two consecutive years, 2022 and 2021, and is the No. 1 cable award show among Black adults 18-49 for the 21st consecutive year.”

With the Writer’s Guild of America strike entering its seventh week and the production of dozens of movies and TV shows being disrupted, the fates of many other entertainment endeavors appear undecided as well. Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have postponed the 30th-anniversary shows of their groundbreaking 1990s debut albums in solidarity with the striking writers, while the MTV Movie & TV Awards had to go on without a host as Drew Barrymore opted out of her duties and several stars declined to attend. The 2023 BET Awards ceremony is set to air live Sunday, June 25 at 8 pm ET, with nominees like Drake, GloRilla, and more. Aside from announcing the nominees, however, BET has yet to reveal further details of the upcoming show, leaving the future somewhat murky. While it’s possible that BET can field a host who doesn’t mind metaphorically crossing the picket line — or even go without one, like the MTV Awards — it’s unclear how the show will proceed, especially if more performers and guests opt to show solidarity with the writers (the awards honor movies, actors, and athletes in addition to musicians). Anything can happen, but for now, it does appear the show will proceed as scheduled.

While each year, the BET Awards celebrate creative expression and Black excellence across music, TV, film, and sports, this year is even more special as we celebrate 50 years of Hip Hop.
Of course, Drake takes the throne yet again, leading the pack with seven nominations. GloRilla follows closely behind with six nominations, while 21 Savage and Lizzo boast five nominations. Beyonce, Burna Boy, Ice Spice, SZA, and Chris Brown have four nominations this year, while Cardi B, Coco Jones, Flo, Future, Jack Harlow, Kendrick Lamar, Maverick City Music, Kirk Franklin, and Tems tie with three nominations each.

The list of this year’s nominees for the 2023 BET Awards has been revealed. Nominees include Ice Spice, Lizzo, Beyoncé, The Weeknd, and many more. Drake takes the lead with seven nominations, including Album Of The Year, Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Best Male Hip Hop Artist, and more.
GloRilla comes in a close second place, with six. She’s also nominated for Album Of The Year, as well as Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Best New Artist, and more. The 2023 BET Awards will air on Sunday, June 25 at 8 p.m. ET. The ceremony will also celebrate hip hop’s 50th anniversary.
