Fat Joe & Papoose Defend Eminem After Melle Mel’s Comments

Fat Joe and Papoose have come to Eminem’s defense after the legendary Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five rapper Melle Mel criticized him during an interview with The Art of Dialogue, last week. Mel argued that Eminem is only considered one of the greatest rappers of all time because he is white. Fat Joe and Papoose disagreed during an Instagram Live post on Monday.

“I disagree with that because even though Eminem is Caucasian, you cannot front on his skillset, man. You can’t deny that skillset!” Papoose said, to which Joe replied: “No way. As much as I love and worship Melle Mel, I think he’s wrong with this one.”

The two both clarified that they are huge fans of Melle Mel, despite adamantly disagreeing with him on Eminem’s talents. “Listen, I love Melle Mel. He’s the originator of his style. He’s amazing, lyrically. I still listen to ‘The Message.’ And I know Melle Mel!” Papoose said. “I look up to him, man. He’s a legend. I could go on and on about the respect that I have for him.” He added: “Lyrically, dudes are still not touching [Melle Mel]. But honestly, that skillset that that boy Slim Shady got, you can’t — nah, man.” Fat Joe also labeled Mel his “icon.” “He’s one of my Top 10,” he said.

As for Melle Mel’s exact comments, he explained that he can recognize that Eminem is talented, but said being white has a lot to do with his popularity. “Obviously, he’s a capable rapper. If you was talking about sales, he’s sold more than everybody. If you talking about rhyme style, okay, he got a rhyme style,” Melle Mel said. “But he’s white! If Eminem was just another n***a like all the rest of us, would he be top five on that list, when a n***a that can rhyme just as good as him is [number] 35? … If he was a Black rapper, he wouldn’t even make the list probably.”

Charlamagne Tha God Calls Kodak Black The GOAT, Compares Him To Kendrick Lamar

Well, we know who bumped “Silent Hill” the most last year. Charlamagne Tha God recently called Kodak Black “the GOAT” and compared him to Kendrick Lamar. While some may find the comparison absurd, they did collaborate on the Compton rapper’s latest album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. Moreover, the radio host explained why he holds the two in a similar regard.

“Kodak is the GOAT,” tha God stated. “I was watching that video and I was thinking to myself like, ‘Man, do people realize how dope Kodak Black is, yo? Not just as a personality, but as a rapper, as an artist. You know these true hip-hop heads will be like ‘Ah, man, you’re talking about Kodak Black…’

“I look at Kodak Black the same way I look at Kendrick Lamar,” he continued. “I’m not even joking. I feel like they’re both two different levels of prolific. They’re telling similar stories, just from different places. They’re just two different versions of the same kid from the hood.”

Furthermore, a lot of fans might consider this a hot take. However, Charlamagne has plenty more where that came from, and other opinions of his caused even more debate. Recently, the media personality expressed his skepticism regarding Chief Keef when naming his list of the most influential rappers.

“No, you know why I don’t put Chief Keef in there?” he remarked. “Because Chief Keef didn’t influence the world, he influenced a sound of a region. Those four people I named literally influenced people all over the world.” Previously, the host mentioned his picks for the top spots. “I’m not going to say the order number, but there’s four: Kanye, Jay-Z, Pac and Wayne. The four most influential rappers of all time.” 

Meanwhile, G Herbo was one of many both inside and outside the rap game to disagree. “What Charlamagne said, he don’t feel like Sosa is one of the most influential, like, globally but I disagree,” the Chicago MC expressed. “Probably right now you don’t feel like that ‘cause you got the Drakes, the Futures. You got so many but I feel like it wouldn’t be a lot of artists if it wasn’t for Sosa. I’m talking about a lot of styles, though.” Even the “Don’t Like” MC himself chimed in on the debate.

Westside Gunn & Benny The Butcher Throw Shots At B.Dot After Exclusion From Best Rappers Of 2022 List

Now that 2022 has officially come to a close, many have finalized their lists containing their favorite things of the year. Most popularly in the music industry, fans and media figures alike tend to share their lists of their favorite songs, albums and artists over the past 365 days.

Of course, hip-hop is one of, if not the most competitive genre. Everyone’s year-end lists surrounding rappers and hip-hop albums usually stir up some heated discussion online.

2022 is no different. One media figure who has become notorious for sharing his year-end lists is hip-hop journalist, B.Dot Miller. On December 23, the Rap Radar co-host took to his Twitter account to share his list of the best rappers of the year.

As per usual, he bases his list on skill, performance and presence. For 2022, he has Pusha T, Gucci Mane and J. Cole as the top three, in that order. Kendrick follows in the fourth spot, JID is fifth, then 21 Savage at sixth. The seventh to tenth spots belong to Kodak Black, Drake, Ransom and Lil Wayne, in that order.

The Griselda camp had an incredibly busy year yet again, collectively dropping several projects. Regardless, none of them are present on B.Dot’s list. Westside Gunn evidently isn’t happy about it.

He and some of the other Griselda crew members, including Stove God Cooks and Rome Streetz, recently sat down for an interview with B.Dot and Elliott Wilson for an episode of their Rap Radar podcast. However, this was clearly before Miller released his list.

“This was a great interview but that was some weeks ago, now it’s F*CK @bdotTM bc he just don’t get it & I wasted 2hrs of my time[.] its @GriseldaRecords ALL YEAR[.] S/O to my guy @ElliottWilson he still good he rode thru the hood w/me in the Bach,” writes the “327” rapper.

“This THURSDAY let’s start my Finale yr with a @RapRadar interview with @ElliottWilson and a few good men @BoldyJames @Stovegodcooks & @Rome_Streetz the ALMIGHTY GXFR @GriseldaRecords,” the Buffalo native writes in another tweet afterwards. In the promo picture of the group, Gunn scratches out B.Dot’s face and writes “Chump” above him.

Furthermore, Benny The Butcher is also taking exception to being left off the list. A fan replied to the Rap Radar co-host’s list asking Benny if they were left off because of a bar from Conway the Machine that mentioned B.Dot. “If so, that’s mad corny. I thought it was harmless,” the fan writes.

The bar in question is seemingly from Benny and Conway’s collaborative track from earlier this year, “Tyson vs. Ali.” The 40-year-old raps, “Tell B.Dot I said, f his list.”

The “Johnny P’s Caddy” rapper replies, insisting that this is the case. “Def tht and I had a brush in with 2 of his rap friends lol,” he says.

Additionally, Benny replied to another comment about the group’s absence when the list was originally posted in December. “F*ck smokin crack he gotta be Eatin it,” he says.

The full Griselda interview with Rap Radar is set to release this Thursday (January 5).

Benny The Butcher Says B.Dot Must Be “Eatin’ Crack” Over Best Rappers List

Benny the Butcher and Westside Gunn were not happy with Griselda’s exclusion from Brian “B.Dot” Miller’s year-end list for the 10 Best Rappers of 2022. Miller selected Pusha T, Gucci Mane, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, JID, 21 Savage, Kodak Black, Drake, Ransom, and Lil Wayne.

“So no Conway Gunn or Benny but 2 guys who didn’t drop albums in the top 3…mmkay,” one fan wrote in response to the list. Benny then tweeted: “Fuck smokin crack he gotta be eatin it.”

When asked why he felt he was excluded, Benny revealed he had a run-in with one of Miller’s “rap friends.” Conway the Machine also once dissed him.

“That’s only based on the opinions of that blogger but who are they fr,” Westside tweeted. “I bet u they look goofy even standing next to US, wat makes them truly valid why just bc they say so, them MFs ain’t nothing by dickriders for a living with cheap pay.”

Last week wasn’t the first time Gunn had taken issue with a list made by Miller. Back in June, the Griselda leader slammed B.Dot’s “10 Best Rappers of 2022 (So Far).” He blamed his crew’s exclusion on “clickbait.”

“Click bait duuuuuuuh he knows by not putting them on there will give it the attn it is just like when I just tweeted it,” he said at the time. “That’s exactly what he wants for the conversation I know for a million fuckin Fakts this is intentional ain’t that right @bdotTM.”
