What Is The Meaning Behind Doja Cat’s ‘Balut?’

With Doja Cat’s fourth studio album, Scarlet, just hours away from release, anticipation for the new project couldn’t be higher. While Doja’s antics during its rollout were purposely designed to throw off some fans, Doja diehards were fascinated with her edgy singles, which included “Attention,” “Paint The Town Red,” “Demons,” and most recently, “Balut.”

However, that last one has some fans confused about its meaning. Whether that’s due to its titular reference to the Filipino street dish or fans wondering how that title relates to the song’s content, many have been wondering…

What Is The Meaning Behind Doja Cat’s “Balut?”

Balut, the dish, originates in the Philippines. It’s a simple street dish consisting of a boiled or steamed fertilized duck or chicken egg. The embryo is incubated between 14 and 21 days then steamed or boiled and eaten directly out of its shell, often with vinegar or salt. The longer the embryo has been incubated, the more it looks like a bird.

Doja’s ingenious use of the term comes from the cutthroat nature of the lyrics. In the verses, she slings such pointed insults as, “I’m the shit, you a real piece of shit / I am needed, you a real needy bitch / I’m competing, you are incompetent / You are fleeting ’cause you can’t copy this.” In a post on Instagram Stories, Doja explained, “I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive. It’s a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of ‘X’ and the end of ‘tweets.’” (The reference to “Fleets” — the short-lived copy of Snapchat and Instagram Stories — bears this out.)

Unfortunately, her explanation actually incensed some Filipino fans, who sought to correct her mischaracterization of balut. What should have been a pride-inducing moment for the culture turned into a teaching moment for Doja as fans explained that the duck embryos are no longer alive when eaten.

Doja Cat “Balut” Backlash: Filipino Fans Displeased With Singer, She Doesn’t Want Unsolicited Advice

Doja Cat doesn’t exactly have the public’s favour lately due to her outlandish antics, but it’s hard to deny that her music is doing numbers. Her last album, Planet Her, was all over the charts and TikTok when it first debuted, and as we receive more singles throughout her Scarlet rollout, fans are eager to see if the genre-bending creative will be able to outdo herself this time. The project will finally arrive on Friday (September 22), after successfully getting “Paint The Town Red” to No. 1.

This past New Music Friday (September 15), the blonde beauty shared “Balut” on DSPs, which finds her tapping into her inner Westside Gunn. Amid streaming that, some fans offered unsolicited advice about her LP’s cover art earlier this week that she quickly shut down. “If I listened I would be eating Captain Crunch out of a Solo cup,” Doja replied when someone suggested she use a fan-designed photo for Scarlet instead of the one she’s already revealed.

Doja Cat Prefers to Do Things Her Way

Besides that awkward interaction, there have also been a considerable number of Filipinos calling out Doja for misrepresenting Balut. In her initial explanation, the “Say So” songstress suggested that the dish is a bird that’s still alive when eaten.

“Who eats Balut alive? Girl you don’t need to shame my culture if you don’t understand it,” one Twitter user lashed out. Another person explained that the meal is boiled before being served, which the California native learned when she tried it out for the first time.

Doja Cat’s ‘Balut’ Explanation Has Her Filipino Fans Up In Arms About Misrepresenting Their Culture

Susmaryosep! Doja Cat’s been on a mission to annoy her fans lately, but her explanation of new single “Balut” may have gone a little too far. Plenty of fans were wondering about the song’s title, which refers to a Filipino street food dish, but her translation of just what that dish actually is has Filipino fans standing up for their culture, which they feel she misrepresented.

“I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive,” she wrote on Instagram. “It’s a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of ‘X’ and the end of ‘tweets.’”

However, it appears that Doja misunderstood what balut actually is. While the dish does consist of a duck or chicken embryo being eaten out of its own shell, the bird is not alive when its eaten, which would be a little extreme for just about anyone, no matter how “exotic” you may think their culture is. Funnily enough, the majority of the backlash against the misunderstanding came on… well, Twitter (still not calling it “X,” you dork).

“Eaten alive?” one fan questioned. “Who eats balut alive? Girl you dont need to shame my culture if you dont understand it. Pahuya huya ka lang [a Tagalog expression meaning “shame on you,” albeit misspelled by the user].”

Another fan explained that “balut is not eaten alive. It’s already boiled.”

It seems Doja herself doesn’t quite know what balut is, even after trying it herself. Although she recognized that it is fertilized duck egg, she said it “moved around a bit,” which could be exaggeration on her part or even just a little bit of her imagination getting the best of her. “It wasn’t as whimsical as I thought it would be,” she said. “Like, the full… there’s feathers and it’s like, you know, you’re eating it straight up. It wasn’t like that at all.”

From personal experience: No, there are no feathers, but it is a full bird. The worst part is the toenails. They’re VERY crunchy. But who knows? Maybe you’ll like that sort of thing. Go ahead and try it.

In the meantime, you can listen to “Balut” now and check it out with the rest of Doja’s album Scarlet on Friday, 9/22.

Doja Cat Puts Her Haters On Notice With Her New Single, ‘Balut’

Doja Cat’s new album, Scarlet, drops next week — but tonight (September 15), she’s shared a scorching new single. Her latest, “Balut,” features her addressing rumors about herself, and setting herself apart from her peers in the game.

On “Balut,” Doja dismisses the rumors about drug use and reminds the haters of her fire pen game that got her this far.

“Is it coke? Is it crack? Is it meth? / What the f*ck do she put in them hits? / I’m the sh*t, you a real piece of sh*t / I am needed, you a real needy b*tch I’m competing, you are incompetent,” raps Doja on one of the song’s verses, over a downtempo, lo-fi beat.

On the song’s chorus, she lets us know just how easily this rap game comes to her. “It’s like taking candy from a baby,” she says.

While this particular album era has proven controversial for Doja, her talent has shown to outweigh her antics. Scarlet’s second single, “Paint The Town Red,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week, making it the first rap song to top the charts in 2023.

You can listen to “Balut” above.

Scarlet is out 9/22. Find more information here.

Doja Cat’s Upcoming Single ‘Balut’ Was Joyfully Leaked By The Rapper During A Livestream Dedicated To Her Fans

After weeks of online discourse, Doja Cat released her pure rap single, “Attention.” Despite one popular naysayer, the song has received rave reviews online from hip-hop heads and Doja Cat’s fans alike. As a reward for the positive remarks, it seems that the entertainer wanted to treat supporters to what is coming down the pipeline.

During an Instagram live stream, Doja Cat joyfully leaked her upcoming single, “Balut.” In the comment section of the session, fans’ reactions were overwhelmingly uplifting. One fan wrote, “This is amazing.” Another added, “She’s like should I leak this or not?”

Although Doja Cat has been highly indecisive regarding her future musical drops, the rapper’s fan page echoed that the track played during the session does have a tentative name. “Doja has confirmed the title to be ‘Balut,’” wrote the fan page.

Both tracks, “Attention” and “Balut,” are expected to appear on the musician’s forthcoming album. At this time, the album is rumored to be titled Scarlet. In the past, Doja Cat announced that the project would be named Hellmouth. However, just as the classified green of the album has changed over time, so has the album’s title. Therefore, only time will tell what the song’s actual name will be.
