Nike Partners with Centre Pompidou for ‘Art of Victory’ Exhibition

Nike Partners with the Centre Pompidou for a Bold Celebration of Sport in Paris — NIKE Inc

Nike is joining forces with Paris’s iconic Centre Pompidou for a unique celebration of sport and culture, opening its “Art of Victory” exhibition on July 24. This event marks a creative tribute to Nike Air innovation, inspired by the Centre Pompidou’s architectural influence on the Air Max 1 design nearly 40 years ago.

The exhibition will feature an immersive experience, transforming the Centre Pompidou’s façade into a dynamic canvas highlighting groundbreaking sports stories. Complementing this, Nike will host a series of interactive sport experiences in the surrounding outdoor space, including running, basketball, global football, skateboarding, and breaking.

“I think the message of this partnership, for me, is to go ahead and be bold when you have a good idea,” says Tinker Hatfield, who credits the Pompidou’s inside-out architecture as the inspiration for the visible Air cushioning technology he integrated into the Air Max 1. “Go ahead and take a risk. Be at least a little disruptive so people notice what you’re doing. I think that’s true for the building as well as the Air Max 1. The technology is important, but it’s the act of boldness and being disruptive that made everybody pay attention.”

Adding to the artistic flair, a public sculpture, “Cycloid Piazza” (2024), designed by French artist Raphael Zarka and architect Jean-Benoît Vétillard, will encourage new public engagement with art.

The “Art of Victory” exhibition runs from July 24 to August 11, celebrating Nike’s legacy and sports innovation. Visitors can register for the exhibition and explore the schedule of events at Paris.nike.com. During this period, admission to the Centre Pompidou’s exhibitions and permanent collection will be free for those under 26.

Kanye West Reportedly Devalued Malibu Home By $14M After Demolishing Beachfront Mansion

Screen Shot 2024 06 24 at 4.57.45 PM

Kanye West has yet again gone against the grain, this time within in the luxury real estate world. Get this, the Yeezy honcho demolished his $53 million beachfront mansion in Malibu, originally designed by esteemed Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Purchased in September 2021, the home was once an architectural marvel blending glass and nature, but West’s drastic renovations have reduced its value by $14 million.

Get ready for this one, West said:

“This is going to be my bomb shelter. This is going to be my Batcave.” West reportedly told a laborer during the demolition, according to an interview with The New Yorker. The mansion, completed by Ando in 2013, has been left as a skeletal shell, stripped of its plumbing, electricity, and iconic clouded glass windows.

Naturally, despite his initial vision, West never transformed the home into the bomb shelter he imagined. In December 2023, he decided to sell the property, initially listing it at $53 million, already $4.5 million less than his purchase price. By April, the price dropped by another $14 million, bringing it to $39 million, with expectations of further reductions.

The gutted remains of Ando’s design stand starkly above the golden sands, a blackened exterior perched on stilts. West, alongside his wife Bianca Censori and a team of laborers from New Jersey, embarked on radical changes that included dismantling staircases and installing a foam slide. Censori, with architecture degrees from the University of Melbourne, helped guide the overhaul.

Laborer Saxon, who worked on the project, described the brutal conditions: “There was so much rebar in the concrete. It was absolutely brutal.” He shared that West’s vision was “simple fresh and cleeeeeean.” Saxon often slept on-site, surviving on Clif Bars and Red Bulls. “I stink, I haven’t showered for two days,” he told The New Yorker.

Saxon’s tasks included painting over marble walls, removing expensive wooden cabinets, toppling chimneys, and smashing marble bathroom walls, leaving the house a barren shell devoid of its original luxury features. At one point, Saxon hesitated to alter the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the ocean, leading to a confrontation where West allegedly said, “If you don’t do what I asked you to do, I’m not going to be your friend anymore. You’re not going to work for me anymore. And you’re only going to see me on TV.” Saxon replied, “I don’t watch TV,” and walked out.

Not for nothing, West’s fascination with architecture is well-known. He has met with prominent architects like David Adjaye and Jacques Herzog and rapped about Ando, whom he once visited with Kim Kardashian. Architect Kulapat Yantrasast remarked, “To be honest, he did not like the house — he did not like the interior,” to The New Yorker.

But after the redesign and demolishment, the drastic changes has left the property virtually unrecognizable and significantly devalued. Saxon is currently in an ongoing lawsuit with West over unpaid wages. Despite efforts to sell, including enlisting Jason Oppenheim from “Selling Sunset,” the mansion remains on the market.

“Giants: Art From The Dean Collection Of Swizz Beatz And Alicia Keys” On Global Tour

Screenshot 2024 06 23 at 5.32.24 AM

Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys is the first major exhibition of the world-class art collection owned by musical and cultural icons Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) and Alicia Keys. Today, in honor of Juneteenth and the celebration of Black art, the Deans announced that the groundbreaking and history-making exhibition first shown at New York’s Brooklyn Museum will commence a world tour starting with a presentation at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art. Further dates and details to be announced soon.

“Our mission has always been about making art accessible to everyone and showcasing these GIANT  artists. We realized quickly that meant this collection had to travel to communities across the country and the world. We are so pleased that Atlanta and the High Museum of Art is the first stop on the GIANT tour,” said the Deans. “ATL is an important part of my story since I went to Stone Mountain High, Redan High and Open Campus. I started DJing parties as a kid at Atrium and Club Flavors too! So, bringing Giants to the High is an Art homecoming  for me!” said Mr. Dean.

Organized by the Brooklyn Museum, where it debuted in February, “Giants” will feature a focused selection from the couple’s holdings, spotlighting works by multigenerational Black diasporic artists, from 20th century legends such as Nick Cave, Lorna Simpson and Barkley L. Hendricks, to artists of a younger generation including Kehinde Wiley, Deana Lawson, Amy Sherald and Ebony G. Patterson, who are expanding the legacies of those who came before them.

“Giants” stands as a testament to the Deans’ ethos of “collecting and preserving the culture of ourselves for ourselves, now and into the future.” Through approximately 115 objects, including 98 major artworks, the exhibition will trace the evolution of an audacious and ambitious collection and explore the ways in which the featured artists and their work have grappled with societal issues, embraced monumentality and made a palpable impact on the art canon. In addition to paintings, photographs and sculptures, the galleries will include noteworthy examples of the Deans’ early non-art collecting interests, including albums, musical equipment and BMX bikes, along with related ephemera.

Born and raised New Yorkers, the couple have been making music for decades and have cultivated diverse passions across music, art and culture. Swizz began his career working first as a DJ and later as a performer and producer for his family’s record label, Ruff Ryders, at the age of 17. Keys, a 16-time Grammy Award-winning artist, learned to play the piano as a child, releasing her hit debut album when she was 20 years old.

Paying homage to legendary elder artists, the section “On the Shoulders of Giants” features work by artists who have left an indelible mark on the world. In her large, colorful abstract paintings, Esther Mahlangu reimagines the long-standing tradition of South African Ndebele house painting. The legacy of portrait and street photography are exemplified in the works of Kwame Brathwaite, Malick Sidibé and Parks, the last of which the Deans hold the largest private collection. These internationally renowned photographers documented moments of self-presentation and pride, as well as everyday life and sociopolitical milestones. They, along with artists such as Jean Michel Basquiat, Ernie Barnes and Hendricks, not only captured the moment in which they lived but also laid the foundation for current and future generations of artists.

The “Giant Conversations” section explores how artists have always critiqued and commented on the world around them. The artists on view address a range of issues Black people have faced throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Simpson’s “Tense” (1991) considers Black women’s self-representation within an environment where others often define that representation. Cave’s textured sculptures examine how Black people, particularly men, must assume costumes to conceal and protect themselves against violence. Other artists such as Jerome Lagarrigue and Henry Taylor present issues of protest and lack of visibility due to homelessness.

Works on view also celebrate Blackness and champion the beauty, resilience, distinctiveness, connection and joyousness within communities across the globe. Over a dozen photographs by Jamel Shabazz honor the everyday people walking the streets of New York from the 1980s to the present. Defying stereotypical depictions of his country by the West, Hassan Hajjaj captures Morocco’s female henna artists in one photograph on view. Sherald’s large-scale diptych portrays Baltimore, Maryland, dirt bike culture and the joyful freedom that comes with riding—a passion Swizz shares.

The “Giant Presence” section of the exhibition offers an impressive finale of monumental artworks. Nina Chanel Abney’s “Catfish” (2017) is a visual provocation about sexual and financial exchange between individuals in a colorful, almost cartoonish, setting. With his nearly 8-foot-tall “Big Wheel I” (2018), Arthur Jafa draws from Mississippi’s monster truck culture and histories of anti-Black violence, underscoring the coexistence of Black Americans’ joys and traumas. Paintings by Titus Kaphar and Meleko Mokgosi also use scale to emphasize powerful themes that resonate across history.

Reebok Teams With Ariie West For New “Ariie-Plugged” Sneaker Art Project

Screenshot 2024 06 04 at 10.00.51 AM

Check out the new “Ariie-Plugged”, a fashion/art project by NYC artist Ariie West, which under his fashion brand Ariri, is known simply as “Plugged”. This fusion of art, fashion and culture shows Ariie’s vision of future collaborations with other brands and features Reebok’s one-of-a-kind Pump sneaker complete with plug inserts and working sockets. Each piece of Ariie’s “Plugged” installment shows off West’s creativity, which transforms footwear into a piece of modern art.

As you can tell, Ariie isn’t just a rapper who can design some drip. Hailing from Harlem, the hustler capital of the world, West owns his own label Autrumn Records, which has a distribution deal through the Virgin Records imprint under the Earth Program umbrella. And West isn’t a newcomer to this. Working under Pharrell Williams’ protegé Jay Ice Pick, laid the foundation for West’s music and fashion endeavors.

The operational process involves linking 20 pairs of sneakers in a chain, connecting one end to a speaker and the other end to an audio source. The artist strategically employs this art installation to illustrate the diverse, yet interconnected nature of humanity, emphasizing our common origin from the same source; Earth.

Mashonda Tifrere Presents ‘I Never Really Knew You’ Exhibit Opening May 15 In Los Angeles

unnamed 5

n honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Art Genesis founder Mashonda Tifrere has curated “I Never Really Knew You …,” a dual exhibit composed of a six-artist group exhibition and a solo exhibit of L.A. based artist Lanise Howard’s newest body of work, “M.U.S.E. Miss. Understood. Sensuality. Economized.”

“I Never Really Knew You …” features works from artists Tonia Calderon, Swoon, Dionne Simpson, Malik Roberts, Amani Lewis (in collaboration with photographer Mazi Smazi), and Calvin Clausell Jr. and has been carefully crafted to reflect the many layers of the ego and serve as a visual journal that offers a story of self-awakening and truth.

Spanning various genres and mediums, “I Never Really Knew You …” invites the viewer into the minds of the artists, highlighting their individual creative processes, growth, vision, and diverse voices.  “Our mental, emotional, and physical health are all victims of the lies our ego-selves whisper in our minds,” Tifrere said. “The ego is the master of disguise. But once you witness the ego, you realize that it never really existed. ‘I Never Really Knew You …’ invites the viewer to realize that we are in control of our human story and that the only way to reveal our truths is by removing our masks and the many layers of fear they hide. Each work of art in this exhibition is a testament to the transformative power of self-realization to align us with life’s potential wonders.”

The exhibition will be open from May 15 to June 1 at Praz-Delavallade, located at 6150 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048. The exhibition’s gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.

Museum of Graffiti Announces Grand Opening of New Fine Art Gallery presented By Paso D’Oro

0

On May 11, 2024, Wynwood will become home to a brand new luxury art gallery from the founders of Museum of Graffiti. The gallery will open in a 3,700 square foot converted warehouse space located at 2521 NW 3rd Ave., adjacent to the Museum of Graffiti and its sister exhibition space the Art of Hip Hop.

The gallery, once located around the corner from its new flagship location, was originally dubbed The Private Gallery as it started during the COVID-19 pandemic as a place for friends, family, and members of the Museum to collect art in a safe, private environment. The Private Gallery quickly earned a long list of celebrity clientele from Quest Love and Diplo to Miami’s own Pitbull because of its intimate nature and rare selection of original post-graffiti works. The gallery represents a diverse group of global contemporary artists who use a wide array of mediums and styles to create the work displayed. The inspiration and aesthetics of the artists differ greatly from one another, yet their backgrounds remain completely in the same vein: each artist has used the streets as a canvas for artistic output at a very early age.

0 1

In its opening exhibition entitled Graffiti Abstraction, the inspiration of the art ranges from Miami-based artist Gustavo Oviedo’s fascination for the Biscayne Bay to Los Angeles native Saber’s portrayal of the flashing lights he sees while experiencing grand mal seizures. Curators Allison Freidin and Alan Ket have traveled the world, attending museum shows and studio visits to select the artists for the inaugural exhibition which will include original works on paper, canvas, wood, and in sculpture form. Other artists in Graffiti Abstraction include MadC, Marti Sawe, Kaves, Niels Shoe Meulman, Sen2, Rime, Boris Tellegen, and Jel Martinez. The gallery will retain a “private” section that will house historical examples of works by the masters of the genre including Futura2000 and Rammellzee.

“We are honored to be bringing the most elevated form of the genre to the heart of Miami. Our growth over the past 4 years is not unique to us—the entire culture is bursting at the seams with innovation, and new opportunities as top level brands and collectors have poured millions of dollars into a once shunned art form. The old narrative that street artists are gang members has been flipped on its head to street artists becoming internationally celebrated geniuses. We are beyond grateful to our partners at Paso D’Oro for helping us take the gallery to the next level. This is a huge moment for the entire community and they made it possible.” said Allison Freidin, co-Founder of The Private Gallery.

The Grand Opening of The Private Gallery is by invitation only, and will give VIPs the first look at the new collection along with the opportunity to taste Paso D’ Oro Wines. Each bottle of Paso D’oro is sourced from the rich vineyards of Paso Robles, CA where the brand is renowned for its dedication to craftsmanship and quality. Each pour truly embodies the essence of creativity, living up to its stunning blue and gold packaging.

A portion of the proceeds from art sales at the VIP celebration being donated to The Erika Ender Heartlight Foundation. Erika Ender, most known for her extensive catalog of awarded hits, including the global sensation “Despacito,” has long been a prominent philanthropist, especially in her native Panama. Her significant charitable work, including her notable TalenPro Project, has impacted over 40,000 individuals and earned a Guinness World Record. Her new foundation now extends her philanthropic reach to the United States in support of children’s rights, education, and nutrition.
