It Appears Jalen Hurts Helped Book Anita Baker For The NFC Championship Game

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has won over a lot of fans this season, leading the 14-3 Eagles to the top seed in the NFC and positioning himself as a finalist for the NFL MVP. But Hurts has never switched up on his fandom for Anita Baker.

Baker turned 65 years old on Thursday, January 26. Hurts tweeted, “Bumping @IAMANITABAKER All Day Per Usual, Happy Birthday” with a purple heart emoji. And Baker tweeted back, “Honored. Singing Songs of Victory, Your Way. Fly.”

The Eagles are preparing to host the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 29 at Lincoln Financial Field. Baker will also be there, and The Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Josh Tolentino doesn’t think that’s a coincidence.

“The magic of Jalen Hurts: Eagles just announced Anita Baker will sing the National Anthem for the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at Lincoln Financial [Field],” he tweeted.

Tolentino isn’t alone in that belief:

Per NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro, the halftime performance will be handled by DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Over in the AFC, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Cincinnati Bengals in a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. After Lil Jon performed at halftime of the Chiefs’ Divisional Round victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend, Fat Joe will handle this Sunday’s halftime performance.

The Eagles’ game against the Niners is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. EST on FOX, followed by the Bengals and Chiefs at 6:30 p.m. EST on CBS.

All of this is leading up to Super Bowl LVII on February 12 in Glendale, Arizona. Rihanna is the highly anticipated Super Bowl halftime performer.

Anita Baker Thanks Chance The Rapper For Helping Her Get Her Master Recordings Back

Anita Baker is a 40-year recording industry veteran and currently performing a Las Vegas residency. During her show Sunday night (May 29), she acknowledged one guest in particular: Chance The Rapper. Baker said that Chance helped her regain ownership of her master recordings from her former labels, which she’d been trying to do until last year.

“Would you guys say hello to a friend of mine by way of the music industry, by way of helping me get a hold and ownership of my master records, Mister Chance The Rapper is right there,” she said. Chance himself later reciprocated on Twitter, posting a video of the touching moment and writing, “I saw one of THE greatest performances of my LIFETIME last night! Thank you so much @IAMANITABAKER for being an inspiration and an icon to so many of US.”

Funnily enough, Chance has also had social media run-ins with other R&B legends that led to unexpected shout-outs. In 2020, Dionne Warwick playfully teased Chance over his stage name, leading to an invitation to record together. That culminated in their November 2021 collaboration “Nothing’s Impossible.”

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old rapper appears to be rolling out a new project, releasing a new single, “Child Of God,” and writing exercises such as “A Bar About A Bar” as he highlights local Chicago artists.

This past weekend, Chicago slang spitter Chance The Rapper was acknowledged by music icon Anita Baker, who thanked Chance during a show for helping her acquire her masters.

Baker showed her thanks to CTR during a recent performance where he was in attendance. “You should say hello to a friend of mine by way of the music industry and by way of helping me, helping me to get a hold and ownership of my master recordings,” Baker said, pointing at Chance, who stood up and thanked the audience for the round of applause.

“I saw one of THE greatest performances of my LIFETIME last night,” Chance wrote on Twitter. “Thank you so much @IAMANITABAKER for being an inspiration and an icon to so many of US.”

Anita added, “Had no idea you would be in our Midst. Such a nice Surprise. Brought Tears, to my eyes. Hope Ms. Essence enjoyed her Birthday ABXO.”

Anita Baker Finally Wins Her Masters And Tells Fans It’s Okay To Stream Her Music Again

For at least the past six months, Anita Baker put up a hard fight to regain control of her masters after her previous label refused to return them. “Miraculously… i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts,” the singer wrote in a tweet back in March. “They no longer ‘Own’, My Name & Likeness. And, by Law…30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me. Unfortunately, They’re gonna make me Fight 4 it. I’m Prepared, 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them ABXO.” Her message earned support from Chance The Rapper and Taylor Swift, the latter who had her own well-publicized battle for her masters.

Thankfully, Baker finally won control of her masters and she took to Twitter to share the news. “All My Children Are Coming Home,” she wrote in a tweet attached with an image that displayed vinyl records of her first five albums. “Catalog. Impossible Things Happen… Every. Single. Day. Gratefully.” Shortly thereafter, a fan asked her if the news meant that they could stream her music again. “Yes. Chil’ren….” she replied. “STREAM ON [music note and ballon emojis] ABXO.”

Baker’s catalog consists of seven albums, one live album, and a compilation project. It includes her No. 1 1988 album Giving You the Best That I Got and three additional top-five projects: 1990’s Compositions, 1994’s Rhythm Of Love, and 2004’s My Everything.

Taylor Swift Supports R&B Legend Anita Baker In Her Fight For Her Masters

In recent weeks, R&B legend Anita Baker has spent some time on Twitter sharing thoughts about her ongoing battle to take back control over her master recordings, which has apparently not gone in her favor so far. Now, Baker has found herself a supporter in Taylor Swift, who herself has famously had some legal drama about her own masters.

On March 9, Baker tweeted, “Miraculously… i have out-lived *ALL, of my Artists Contracts. They no longer ‘Own’, My Name & Likeness. And, by Law…30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me. Unfortunately, They’re gonna make me Fight 4 it. I’m Prepared, 2 do that. Please Dont advertise/buy them ABXO.”

More recently, she gave props to Swift yesterday for how she handled her situation by re-recording her back catalog, writing, “Her creations bought & sold Again & Again, wouldnt even let her do *A Buy Out*…Taylor Swift *re-recording, her Catalog/Taylor’s Version. The GoodFight Go… Gurrrrl.” That got a response out of Swift, who wrote, “I’m cheering you on in your fight to get back your work, and appreciate your support so much!! Thank you.” Baker answered back, “This Solidarity is a Beautiful Thing! Thank You.”

Meanwhile, after Baker’s initial tweet, Chance The Rapper also chimed in with a message of support and a call to all of his fans, writing, “DO NOT LISTEN TO NO ANITA BAKER TIL THEY GIVE HER HER MASTERS BACK. TELL YO MAMA TO TELL A MAMA.”
