Angel Reese And LSU Stars Name Their All-Time Basketball Starting Lineups

Angel Reese and several of her LSU teammates recent namely their all-time basketball starting lineups. Reese kicked things off with a twist. “I’m starting strong with Lisa Leslie,” Reese said before filling her lineup out with Cheryl Miller, Kobe, Shaq, and most surprisingly, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey. Mulkey was a national championship winning point guard with LA Tech in the early 80s. Sophomore Flau’jae Johnson also named Mulkey to her lineup and also agreed with Reese on Shaq. However, Johnson also picked Dwyane Wade, Tim Duncan and Allen Iverson.

Meanwhile, new transfer Hailey Van Lith went in a different direction entirely. After naming Kobe and the aforementioned Lisa Leslie, Van Lith also selected Becky Hammon, Kevin Garnett, and Micheal Jordan. “That’s a tough starting five, right there. Mad tough,” Van Lith said of her team. The question came about as apart of an interview the players did ahead of the Hall of Fame Series, the traditional marquee event to open the college basketball season. The basketball season kicks off next week.

LSU Betting Favorites For Title

Meanwhile, oddsmakers have revealed the Tigers as their title favorites ahead of the start of the women’s basketball season next week. The Tigers are +230 favorites on FanDuel and +300 favorites on DraftKings. Just behind LSU is UConn at +500 and +600 on the two sites respectively. Furthermore, LSU and UConn are #1 and #2 in both the AP‘s preseason poll and ESPN‘s preseason bracketology. LSU opens the season against #20 Colorado in Las Vegas next week.

The Tigers are also seeking to become the first team since the UConn four-peat to repeat as National Champions. To maximize their chances, head coach Kim Mulkey built a superteam from recruiting and the portal. She has two top-7 freshmen and added Aneesah Morrow from DePaul and Hailey van Lith from Louisville. These additions are a huge reason for the preseason hype surrounding LSU. However, experts have also noted that if the lineup fails to be cohesive, it may spell disaster for the team.

Angel Reese “Insulted” By Mock Draft

Meanwhile, 2023-24 is likely to be Reese’s final year at the college level. While she has the option to play a fifth year under the COVID waiver, Reese has previously expressed her desire to take the next step in her career. However, Mulkey recently spoke on Reese’s negative reaction to ESPN projecting her to go eighth in the 2024 WNBA Draft. “That was an insult to her. We talked about the things she needs to work on. Whether she gets picked higher than that or not, it still motivates her. She gets motivated in practice with someone going head-to-head with her or talking trash back at her. She’s a competitor,” Mulkey said.

While Reese could play a fifth year in college thanks to the COVID exemption, she has made it clear that she is ready for the pros. “This is my senior year, and I have the opportunity to declare for the WNBA this year if I choose to. Personally, I aspire to make it to the WNBA. While I do have the option for another year, I do want to get out of college, start life outside of school, and pursue my WNBA dreams. It’s been a challenging but rewarding four years, and I’m excited to continue improving at LSU and beyond,” she told WNBA legend Lisa Leslie for Glamour.

Angel Reese Becomes Shaq’s First Reebok Signing

Angel Reese has signed an exclusive deal with Reebok, becoming the first athlete to join the sneaker brand since Shaq became the company’s President of Basketball. In an interview announcing the deal, Reese said that Shaq’s presence was a prominent factor in sealing the deal. “Now that he’s just been announced as their President of Basketball, that is inspirational to me, just being able to see an athlete or former athlete shift from not just being an athlete, but being the president of the brand is something that’s important. I would love to do that one day,” Reese said.

Shaq has previously called Reese the LSU GOAT and the two Tigers appear to share a close bond. While the terms of the deal were not announced, it’s a fairly unsurprising move given their history. Shaq was announced as the company’s new President of Basketball last week after the brand announced a major re-investment into the basketball market. Fellow Hall of Famer Allen Iverson was named the VP of Basketball at the same time.

Reese & LSU Preseason #1 In AP Poll

The news comes just a few days after the Reese-led LSU program was ranked #1 in the first women’s basketball AP poll of the year. The Tigers received 35 of 36 first-place votes after adding Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow in the transfer portal. It’s the highest preseason rank the Tigers have ever held and their first top-three preseason ranking since 2005. LSU was ranked #2 in the 1977 preseason poll. The Tigers open the season against #20 Colorado in Las Vegas on November 6.

The return of Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd from injury saw UConn take the #2 spot in the poll. The appearance marks UConn’s 565th consecutive week on the AP Poll, tying the record set by Tennessee. Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark and Iowa sit at #3. UCLA and Utah round out the top five. 2021 champions Stanford find themselves ranked at #15, their lowest preseason spot since 2015. This comes after losing several prominent members of their team to graduation and transfers.

Angel Reese Addresses Caitlin Clark Beef, Eyes Title Defense

Angel Reese had a lot to say at LSU’s media day this week. First, she made it very clear that she has no issues with Iowa’s Caitlin Clark. “I love Caitlin; we’ve been competing since we were in AAU. It was always fun, always competitive. One day, hopefully, we could even be teammates. She is a great player, shooter, person and teammate. The world is always going to have a good girl and a bad girl. I’ll take that I’m going to be the bad guy because I know I’ve grown women’s basketball and inspired people,” Reese told reporters. The media-propelled feud between the pair stemmed from Reese trolling Clark with the “you can’t see me” gesture during their National Championship face-off.

She also expressed her desire to mount a successful title defense this season. If the Tigers pull it off, they will be the first team to defend the women’s title since the 2014-16 UConn three-peat. To maximize their chances, head coach Kim Mulkey built a superteam from recruiting and the portal. She has two top-7 freshmen and added Aneesah Morrow from DePaul and Hailey van Lith from Louisville.

Reese “Insulted” By First ESPN Mock Draft

However, the media day wasn’t the first thing we’ve heard from Reese in the run-up to the season. Mulkey recently spoke on Reese’s negative reaction to ESPN projecting her to go eighth in the 2024 WNBA Draft. “That was an insult to her. We talked about the things she needs to work on. Whether she gets picked higher than that or not, it still motivates her. She gets motivated in practice with someone going head-to-head with her or talking trash back at her. Angel Reese “Insulted” By ESPN’s WNBA Mock Draft

Angel Reese may be about to start a new beef. Recently, her college coach spoke on Reese’s reaction to ESPN projecting her to be drafted eighth in the 2024 WNBA Draft. “That was an insult to her. We talked about the things she needs to work on. Whether she gets picked higher than that or not, it still motivates her. She gets motivated in practice with someone going head-to-head with her or talking trash back at her. She’s a competitor,” LSU head coach Kim Mulkey said.

Reese’s tumble to the second half of the first round was perhaps the biggest surprise of M.A. Voepel’s first WNBA mock draft of the year. Furthermore, Voepel chose to project Paige Bueckers as the second pick. Bueckers hasn’t played a full season since her freshman year and missed all of last season with an ACL tear. While the 2024 draft class is one of the strongest and deepest in years, it’s hard to see many teams passing on Reese. She was top-five in both points and rebounds per game last season.

However, Reese isn’t going to be displaying any “senior-itis” this season. She fully intends to pursue another National Championship. Meanwhile, LSU is still hunting for their first SEC title since 2008 or their first conference tournament title since 2003. To aid Reese, Mulkey and the Tigers have built a bona fide superteam around her. Along with two top-ten freshmen, LSU added transfers Aneesah Morrow from DePaul and Hailey Van Lith from Louisville. The Tigers kick off their 2023-24 campaign in Vegas against Colorado.

Caitlin Clark & Angel Reese Among Players Being Watched By WNBA Teams For 2024 Draft

The WNBA playoffs are in full swing. However, for many of the teams not participating, their attention has already turned to the draft. The 2024 WNBA draft has the potential to be one of the strongest in recent memory. However, there is an air of uncertainty to the draft. While stars like Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese are eligible, many top stars may opt to use their COVID waiver and play a fifth season in college.

“If the depth of the class turns out to be what it’s capable of being, having two first-round picks is exciting for what that can do for us,” LA Sparks coach Curt Miller said. “But we have to be thorough [with scouting], because this is probably the last class with so many unknowns.” Meanwhile, veteran Diana Taurasi, who has announced her intention to play a 20th WNBA season next year, sees the 2024 class as having a massive ceiling. “When you look at this [potential] draft class, what these kids have done the last few years, there’s some names that could change your team.”

ESPN Includes A Few Surprises In First WNBA Mock Draft

Paige Bueckers

Alongside comments from around the WNBA, ESPN also released their first early mock draft for 2024. The draft considers all players as declaring for the draft and ranks the top-four teams by lottery odds. The number one pick, presumptively held by the Indiana Fever, remains a consensus across most mocks – Caitlin Clark. Clark is the reigning National Player of the Year and one of the most exciting players in college basketball. However, #2 is where the surprises begin. M.A. Voepel slots UConn’s Paige Bueckers at the spot despite Bueckers’ long injury history. Bueckers has been great when healthy. However, she has less than 50 games in her college career and also has three years of eligibility left.

Furthermore, perhaps one of the biggest surprises is that Voepel has Angel Reese falling to #8. Reese is perhaps the most recognizable player in the college game right now. Furthermore, she helped lead LSU to a national title last season and heads into her senior year with a newly formed superteam around her. Two other surprises are Cameron Brink at #3 and Hailey Van Lith at #5. Both players have exceptional skills – Brink as a defender and Van Lith as a perimeter shooter. However, both players have glaring holes in their game, ironically the other’s strengths. As mentioned, all this could change depending on eligibility decisions at the end of the season.

Angel Reese Says She Can No Longer Attend Classes In Person

In an interview with Teen Vogue, LSU basketball superstar Angel Reese spoke on how her newfound fame is impacting her education. According to Reese, her celebrity status means that is no longer safe or practical for her to attend classes in person. Instead, she has been relegated to attending remotely or taking purely online classes. “I didn’t think I was going to be on Shade Room every time I post something. I don’t feel like I’m a celebrity, but I think a lot of people look at me as a celebrity now because of the impact I’ve had on not just women’s basketball, but sports in general, and Black women. Things have changed for me.”

However, Reese lamented the change to her schedule, stating that “School’s first, basketball’s next.” Despite this, she also confirmed that her intention was to play in the WNBA. Reese will be eligible for the 2024 Draft and is widely considered to be the #2 pick behind Caitlin Clark. But all this is in service of her family. “My mom is my rock,” Reese added. “Everything I do is just for her and my brother.”

Reese is not the only LSU athlete who has been forced away from physically attending class. Gymnast and social media star Olivia Dunne also recently revealed that she can no longer attend her classes in person. According to a July interview with Elle, Dunne cited “safety reasons” as why she can no longer attend in person. “There were some scares in the past, and I just want to be as careful as possible. I don’t want people to know my daily schedule and where I am,” Dunne said. Rowdy fans and misogynist trolls make it easy to see why LSU now employs private security for the gymnastics team. “I just want to coach. I don’t want to have my head on a swivel worried about if somebody is coming out of the stands,” Head Coach Jay Clark told Elle.

College athletes find themselves in a spotlight never before seen. Social media can turn them into a figure watched by millions. Meanwhile, the ability to now earn money in college through NIL deals now also makes them publicly seen brand figures. However, you can’t help but feel for these athletes as their fame and commitments reduces the scope of the “college” aspect of being a “college athlete”.
