On March 12, 1997, NBA history was made when rookie Allen Iverson faced off against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in a highly anticipated regular season game in Philadelphia. In that game, Iverson put Jordan on skates with a crazy crossover, leading to a mid-range jumpshot.
Iverson had been dazzling opponents since his debut, and this game was no exception. The significance of the matchup is further underscored by the upcoming Sotheby’s auction titled “Colossal: The Ultimate Jordan Collection,” which will feature Jordan’s red Bulls jersey worn during this iconic game.
According to The Athletic, Iverson’s memorabilia will be included; the auction’s title was inspired by Iverson’s memories of visiting Sotheby’s. Reflecting on the game, Iverson recalled recognizing the opportunity to challenge the GOAT, saying, “I told my teammates at Georgetown that if I ever had a chance to try it out on the greatest player ever, I would want to put my move to the test.”
The jersey, worn by Jordan approximately 17 times during the 1996-97 championship season, is expected to fetch between $4-6 million, making it one of the most valuable pieces of sports memorabilia ever.
There has long been a lot of crossover between the basketball and hip-hop world. We regularly see artists putting in work in the gym with top hoops trainers and even trying their hand at pro ball, while there is a long history of NBA players hopping in the studio to put out a rap album. As 2 Chainz — who played basketball at Alabama State — once eloquently explained to Dime, a lot of rappers and basketball players come from the same places.
“I know for a lot of Blacks, we thought that our only way to get out of the hood was either rappin’ or playing basketball,” 2 Chainz said. “So it has a common denominator for me and people who have a low socioeconomic status for a background. It kind of feels like you have to have a sport or some kind of other skill set, you dig, to get your mama a house. So that’s why we all want to play basketball, and that’s why all basketball players want to rap.”
However, there are levels to success in that crossover realm, and plenty of debate as to who has done the best when dipping a toe into that other world. On the most recent episode of Uproxx’s “Fresh Pair,” Dave East joined Just Blaze and Katty Customs and the conversation turned to hoops (5:00 mark of the above video). East played college ball at Richmond and Towson before becoming a hip-hop artist, and as such, he’s well-equipped to offer his list of the best ballers who rap and rappers who ball — noting there aren’t many that can really hoop.
“Ballers to rap? I would say, gotta throw Shaq in there. Shaq had a feature with Biggie, so you always gotta throw Shaq in. Shaq was hard, he was probably one of the first ones,” East said. “A.I. I feel like a lot of people don’t put Iverson in there, but I remember the “40 Bars” and all that. I remember Iverson, you feel me. Dame Lillard, to me now, in this generation right now, I think Dame got it as far as a baller that rap.
“Rappers to ball? Me. Yeah, I’m gonna put myself on the top of that list. I gotta get in shape. I feel like a lot of them rapper basketball dudes, they do it now. They got famous, they got a name, and that’s like their hobby in their free time. Like, I really used to play basketball. Before I ever wrote a rhyme or ever really thought about this, I was in the park or in the gym. I was really playing ball. When I see them lists, I laugh. I really used to do that. I need 30 days to get in shape. I got real footage on a real Division 1 program. Go find another rapper, I think 2 Chainz played D1. But it wasn’t too many of them that was. There’s a few of ‘em that nice. Salute the ones that are.”
It’s safe to say East isn’t very impressed by the videos of artists in the lab with Chris Brickley and other hoops trainers, but he does recognize he would need a month to train to get back in actual hoops shape.

Shaq and Allen Iverson have some new roles ahead of them at sporting giant Reebok. The company announced this week that Shaq and Iverson would serve as the President and Vice-President of Basketball respectively. For Shaq, it’s a homecoming of sorts after signing his first career sneaker deal with the company nearly three decades ago. “As an athlete, he made an incredible imprint on not only our brand, but the entire sport and culture of basketball. With the combination of his deep-rooted history with Reebok and reigning influence he’s made on the game, there is no one better than this guy,” Reebok CEO Todd Krinsky said of Shaq.
The pair will work together to help elevate the brand. Shaq will work on brand partnerships. Meanwhile, Iverson will focus on community initiatives and partnership activations. Iverson is also a Reebok athlete, signing with the brand in 1996. “We’ve been friends forever. He’s a great dude, he’s a great friend, and he was happy—and he’ll be next to me,” Shaq told Complex of the partnership.
However, Shaq isn’t the only person who has been praising Iverson in recent months. AI was on hand to present Dwyane Wade with his Hall of Fame jacket back in August. “It means everything to me,” Wade told PEOPLE. “I wear the number three jersey because of Allen Iverson and just have so much respect for that man. No one has been able to use [Iverson] yet, and that I’m the first one to be able to say Allen Iverson has presented me into the Hall of Fame…that right there, if you tell 17-year-old Dwyane that, I wouldn’t believe you.”
Initially, Wade wanted his longtime Miami Heat co-star Udonis Haslem to present him. However, your presenter must be an existing Hall of Famer and Haslem only announced his retirement this offseason. “So, when I started thinking about guys that are Hall-of-Famers, guys that I looked up to, right away three names came to mind,” Wade says. “It’s Michael Jordan, it’s Kobe Bryant, and it’s Allen Iverson. Obviously, my brother Kobe couldn’t be in that seat, couldn’t be in one of those chairs to present me in.” Eventually, Wade settled on the Sixers legend.
