EarthGang Teams Up with AFROPUNK for RIP Human Art Exhibit in NYC

Atlanta’s trailblazing hip-hop duo, EarthGang, embarked on a creative journey, taking their RIP Human Art Exhibit to The Standard, High Line Hotel in NYC in collaboration with AFROPUNK. The invite-only event marked the launch of EarthGang’s much-anticipated EP, “EarthGang vs the Algorithm: RIP Human Art,” set for release this fall.

The High Line Room was transformed into an immersive haven of artistic expression, featuring classical art reimagined by visionary emerging multidisciplinary artists. Attendees included figures from the art and music industries, including Malik Roberts, Caroline Wanga, Sickamore, and more.

Beyond the captivating art exhibit, the event featured panel discussions, artist interactions, and an exclusive preview of EarthGang’s upcoming EP. A fireside conversation moderated by Malaika Jabali of ESSENCE delved into the duo’s creative process, their new project, and the fusion of art, music, and technology that defines their work.

EarthGang’s appearance at AFROPUNK follows their groundbreaking 2019 festival performance. Their upcoming EP, “EarthGang vs the Algorithm: RIP Human Art,” challenges algorithm dominance and celebrates human creativity’s enduring spirit. The duo recently offered a taste of the EP with the single and music video “Bobby Boucher” Feat. Benji., inspired by the cult-classic film “The Waterboy,” gaining acclaim, even from the film’s star, Adam Sandler.

The Roots and Burna Boy to Headline Return of AFROPUNK Brooklyn

AFROPUNK is set to return to Brooklyn and will be headlined by The Roots and Burna Boy. AFROPUNK, a celebration of Black joy and a monument to the Brooklyn community’s resiliency, will take place in Commodore Barry Park on September 10th and 11th.

Joining The Roots and Burna Boy will be Lucky Daye, Freddie Gibbs, Tierra Whack, and Earl Sweatshirt. Rising star Bartees Strange will make his AFROPUNK debut as Butcher Brown will also hit the stage. AFROPUNK will also highlight the community, bringing Brooklyn artists Rodney Chrome, Alex Mali, and Talia Goddess to the stage.

AFROPUNK offers the Spinthrift Market, a retail market with creative New York-based manufacturers, selectors, and curators, as well as AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats, which allows attendees to sample cuisine from NYC chefs and local food trucks. Burna Boy, The Roots, And Isaiah Rashad Will Headline Afropunk 2022 In Brooklyn

This summer, Afropunk Festival will return to Brooklyn for the first time this year since 2019. Celebrating the diverse sound and style of the Black music community, this year’s Afropunk lineup boasts several of the best acts in music across all genres.

Taking place at Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, festivities kick off Saturday, September 10 and continue into Sunday, September 11. Set to take the stage this year are Burna Boy, The Roots, Isaiah Rashad, Tierra Whack, Ambre, Talia Goddess, Lucky Daye, Earl Sweatshirt, Bartees Strange, Freddie Gibbs, and more.

This year’s Afropunk festival marks Burna Boy’s first headlining set at a US festival and his first show in New York City since his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert this past April. He is expected to perform music from his upcoming album, Love, Damini.

For The Roots’ performance, the band will celebrate 30 years as a music group and will perform hits from their decade-spanning catalog.

Tickets for Afropunk go on sale Friday, June 17 at 10 a.m. EST. Citi Cardmembers will have access to an exclusive presale beginning Thursday, June 16 at 10 a.m. EST.

Noname Promises To Release Her Album After Returning To The Stage At Afropunk

Chicago rapper Noname seems to be much more interested in activism than music these days. After opening the Radical Hood Library in Los Angeles last autumn, she insinuated that she was done with music, apologizing to fans for stringing them along regarding her long-awaited third studio album, Factory Baby. However, just a few weeks later, she posted a photo from her home studio, musing in the caption that “maybe 30 is too young to retire.”

If that was an encouraging sign for longtime fans hoping that Noname would rediscover her spark for music, then her latest post should have them feeling ecstatic — or at least cautiously optimistic. In a new post, Noname announced that she’d be performing again for the first time since before the pandemic before releasing the album. In the caption she gave her reasoning, which fluctuated between exasperated obligation and outright bravado. “First i’ll play a few shows because my mortgage doesn’t care about my politics,” she wrote. “Then i’ll drop an album because it seems like people forgot i’m that bitch.”

The first show in question will be at the upcoming Afropunk festival in Minneapolis on June 19, where she’ll join a lineup including Ari Lennox, Mereba, Sango, and Pink Siifu. Then, I guess we’ll see what happens.

Rico Nasty Will Headline Afropunk’s Virtual ‘Black Spring’ Concert

Rico Nasty, the DMV artist who blends hyperpop and hip-hop with punk rock aesthetics, would seem like the perfect headliner for a festival called “Afropunk,” right? Afropunk announced the lineup for its 2021 virtual festival “Black Spring” today, and guess who’s headlining: Rico Nasty. I love it when a plan comes together.

The genre-agnostic festival, now in its sixteenth year, was forced to move online for its most recent iterations by the global coronavirus pandemic, but clearly, the show must go on. The Black Spring show, scheduled for April 23, will take place in Miami at 4 pm ET but will stream worldwide at planetafropunk.com.

In addition to Rico Nasty, who returns to the festival after previously performing in 2019, performers will include Black Pantera, ChocQuibTown, Dawerxdamper, Jup Do Bairro, Seafoam Walls, Seu Jorge, and Projexx. Afropop is also collaborating with NPR Music for “Tiny Desk Meets Afropunk,” a collection of stripped-down performances in the style of the popular NPR web show from Calma Carmona, ChocQuibTown, Luedji Luna, and Nenny.

Afropunk, which bills itself as the festival for alternative Black and Latin artists who are generally overlooked by the mainstream, has previously hosted such versatile, outspoken artists as Erykah Badu, Grace Jones, Solange Knowles, Tyler The Creator, and more.
