It Looks Like Even Usher Has Picked A Side In The War Between J. Cole And Kendrick Lamar

You know that scene in Mean Girls where Regina scans the Burn Book and scatters the copies throughout the hallway, resulting in a massive riot as all the girls vent their grievances in physical, violent fashion (if not, here you go)? That’s what Rap Twitter looks like right now: utter chaos.

The Burn Book in this case is J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill,” the North Carolina rapper’s response to Kendrick Lamar’s call-out in “Like That.” The massive debate is even drawing in some of music’s biggest names, including Usher Raymond, of all people. Usher shared a screenshot from his Spotify while playing “Pi” from Cole’s new mixtape Might Delete Later, which also contains “7 Minute Drill.” “Pi” features, hilariously enough, Kendrick’s former labelmate on Top Dawg Entertainment, Ab-Soul, and LA battle rapper Daylyt, who is in a group with TDE President Punch Henderson, A Room Full Of Mirrors. Fans believe this means Usher is not only Team Cole, but that he’s suggesting that even rappers with ties to K. Dot are, as well.

Obviously, this is all fun and games. Lest we not forget, Jay-Z and Nas not only teamed up onstage but on several records after “Takeover” and “Ether.” It is NOT that serious. But this might be the funniest twist in the saga yet.

What Is J. Cole’s ‘7 Minute Drill?’ The Meaning Behind The Title Of His Kendrick Lamar Diss

Kendrick Lamar had perhaps the musical headline of March with his featured appearance on Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You song “Like That.” On the track, he raps, “Motherf*ck the big three, n****, it’s just big me,” an apparent reference to Drake and J. Cole’s 2023 single “First Person Shooter.”

Since then, fans have been waiting for a response from either of the targeted rappers. Last night/this morning (April 5), Cole delivered one on his surprise new mixtape, Might Delete Later. The track of note here is “7 Minute Drill,” which features these lyrics seemingly alluding to Lamar:

“He still doin’ shows, but fell off like The Simpsons / Your first sh*t was classic, your last sh*t was tragic / Your second sh*t put [people] to sleep but they gassed it / Your third sh*t was massive and that was your prime / I was trailin’ right behind and I just now hit mine / Now I’m front of the line with a comfortable lead / How ironic, now that I got it he want somethin’ with me / Well he caught me at the perfect time, jump up and see / Boy, I got here off of bars, not no controversy / Funny thing about it, b*tch, I don’t even want the prestige / F*ck the Grammy’s ’cause them crackers ain’t never done nothin’ for me, ho.”

That still leaves one question:

What Is J. Cole’s “7 Minute Drill?” The Meaning Behind The Title Of His Kendrick Lamar Diss

Ibrahim Hamad, Cole’s longtime manager and Dreamville co-founder, explained on the Say Less Podcast (as Complex notes). Hamad said of Cole, “He does these seven-minute drills […] where he’ll just be like, ‘You got seven minutes.’ It’s basically his way of breaking out of overthinking. Like, ‘Don’t even think about it, start a verse. What are we going to talk about?’ He’ll be like, ‘Yo, Cozz, write a verse about… pizza,’ I don’t know. And then they got seven minutes, and then they put the timer on, and then it’s like, ‘Alright, what you got?’”

J Cole Calls Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly” Boring, Says “Mr. Morale” Was “Tragic” On “7 Minute Drill”

J Cole was dissed by Kendrick Lamar on “Like That.” Although the song was mostly aimed at Drake, there is no doubt that some of the bars in there were for Cole. This sparked a ton of reactions from fans. Mostly, the fans out there just wanted to hear some sort of response. Drake largely ducked the smoke. Overall, it has been three weeks, and he has still yet to actually deliver some sort of response. Meanwhile, fans have been curious about whether or not Cole would want to say anything. As it turns out, he did.

Earlier today, Cole dropped off a new surprise album called Might Delete Later. The album is 12 tracks long, and is packed with features. The most important song, however, is the last one, titled “7 Minute Drill.” In this track, Cole takes shots at Kendrick Lamar, and systematically goes through his discography. It even appears as though he calls To Pimp A Butterfly boring. Additionally, he calls Mr. Morale tragic. These are some interesting bars, and one has to wonder if Cole even believes them, or if he is peddling internet narratives.

J Cole Speaks

“I got a phone call that said somebody was dissing… Your first sh*t was classic, your last sh*t was tragic… your 2nd sh*t put n**gas to sleep but they gassed it… Your 3rd sh*t was massive hit that was your prime… I was trailing right behind but I just now hit mine,” Cole raps on the song. Overall, these are the bars everyone is focused on, and for good reason. Now, all eyes are on Kendrick as fans wonder whether or not he will want to drop his rebuttal.
