Super Bowl LVIII: Everything You Need To Know About Chiefs-49ers

Super Bowl Sunday is finally upon us. After 20 weeks of high-octane football, just two teams remain in the race for the Lombardi Trophy. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers descend upon Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII. A rematch of Super Bowl LIV, can the Chiefs become the first back-to-back champions since 2004? Or will the 49ers lift the Lombardi for the first time since 1995? Let’s make the case for both teams.

Kansas City Chiefs (Taylor’s Version)

For the fourth time in the seven years since drafting Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl. The NFL’s contemporary synonym for success, KC is looking to truly establish itself as a dynasty. However, the journey to become the first back-to-back champions since the ’04 Pats has been harder than in previous years. Going 11-6, the Chiefs were 9th in offensive yardage and 15th in scoring. The team continued to run through the established battery of Mahomes and Travis Kelce (23% of Mahomes passing yards, targeted 20% of the time). However, the Chiefs also found a draft gem in Rashee Rice (Drafted at #55, 938 yards). Furthermore, sophomore back Isiah Pacheco was nearly a 1000-yard running back.

However, the true power of this team was its defense. Justin Reid and Trent McDuffie (175 tackles between them) prowled downfield relentlessly. Meanwhile, Chris Jones and George Karlaftis (21 sacks combined) made opposing quarterbacks live in fear for 60 minutes a week. Overall, the defensive unit was second in yards allowed and points allowed. This has continued into the postseason, where three high-scoring offenses (Miami, Buffalo, Baltimore) have all been suffocated. This has been especially important in the latter two games, where the offense has struggled to run away with games.

Of course, we must also mention Taylor Swift, the team’s informal good luck charm after making her relationship with Travis Kelce public in Week 3. However, Swift will likely be absent from Vegas due to a quartet of Eras Tour shows in Tokyo ending the day before the Super Bowl.

If You’re Going To (The) San Francisco (49ers)…

49ers

The San Francisco 49ers return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2020 when they lost to Kansas City. A 12-5 team in the regular season, the Niners were 2nd in offensive yardage and 3rd in scoring. Brock Purdy continued to prove that draft position means nothing, throwing for over 4200 yards and 31 touchdowns. The name of the game for San Francisco is overwhelming force. They had two 1000-yard receivers in Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. Add in the league’s best rusher Christian McCaffrey (1459 yards, 14 touchdowns) and you get an offense that simply cannot be stopped.

The defense also shone in the Bay. 9th in yards allowed and 3rd in points allowed is what you’d expect from a five-loss team but is still impressive nonetheless. It all starts with the defensive line itself. Linebacking duo Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw combined for 252 tackles while the edge wasn’t any safer with 10.5 sacks from Nick Bosa. Not to say the defensive backs are any less impressive, but it’s less of a concern when the ball often doesn’t get past the line of scrimmage.

However, are the 49ers simply waiting to choke? Both of their playoff wins have been by a field goal. Against the Lions in the Conference championship, they needed to make the largest comeback in NFC Championship history to erase a 17-point halftime deficit. Despite their dominance, despite the regular season accolades, the 49ers have been unable to build a lead and hold it when it comes to the playoffs.

Chiefs-49ers: Who Wins?

49ers
SANTA CLARA, CA – JANUARY 28: Brock Purdy #13 of the San Francisco 49ers scrambles out of the pocket during the third quarter of the NFC Championship NFL football game against the Detroit Lions at Levi’s Stadium on January 28, 2024 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images)

Super Bowl LVIII is widely expected to come down to the wire. The Niners enter as -1.5 favorites. However, the over/under is set at a surprisingly generous 47.5. The matchup features two of the hardest teams to score on in the league this season. that means yards and points will be at a premium. It is also where the 49ers’ edge in this game emerges from.

The Chiefs offense lives and dies with Patrick Mahomes. Especially with the Warner-Greenlaw tandem shutting down the run, the Chiefs need Mahomes connecting through the air. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy doesn’t need to carry the 49ers. If Reid and McDuffie create too much of a no-fly zone, Purdy can lean on CMC’s unstoppable legs. If the Chiefs lean hard into stopping McCaffery, there are two 1000-yard receivers for Purdy to connect with.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers 23 – 20 Kansas City Chiefs. As mentioned, this is likely not going to be a game where touchdowns are traded back and forth for 60 minutes. This is a game that will be won on defense. With touchdowns at a premium, the 49ers go up three late in the fourth but are able to deny Mahomes his signature game-winning drive with a last-stand defensive effort. But let us know how you think the game will play out in the comments.

Ray-Ray McCloud Focused On Super Bowl LVIII, Not Taylor Swift

Musician, CEO, and 49ers wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud has told TMZ that his focus this Sunday is the Super Bowl, not meeting Taylor Swift. “I’m a big fan of greatness. She’s great at what she do. She big time. But, hey, this is football. We don’t care about no album coming out. We don’t care about none of that. Congrats to her on the Grammy thing she did, but we don’t care about none of that, man,” McCloud said. Swift is unlikely to attend the Vegas-hosted Super Bowl due to performances in Tokyo until the day before. However, it’s clear that McCloud’s football focus is bigger than his musical aspirations.

McCloud’s music might be a little under the radar for many rap fans, that is if they don’t play Madden. All six songs from his EP Crowd Control, recorded alongside fellow players Darren Waller, Terron Armstead, and Melvin Ingram, were featured on the in-game soundtrack of Madden 24. Elsewhere, McCloud was recently named CEO of talent agency Legendary Tribe Entertainment. McCloud had 135 yards on 12 catches this season.

Lamar Jackson Named MVP

Elsewhere in the NFL, the league held its annual season awards this week. McCloud’s teammate Christian McCaffery snapped Offensive Player of the Year but the biggest award of the night, MVP, went to Lamar Jackson in a landslide. ackson received 49 of 50 first-place votes to earn him since second career MVP award. Dak Prescott and Christian McCaffery finished a distant second and third respectively. Josh Allen earned the other first-place vote. Preseason favorite for the award Patrick Mahomes finished 7th with just six total votes.

Jackson becomes the ninth multi-time MVP of the Super Bowl era but stands alone as the only one in the club without a ring. However, Jackson’s 2023 MVP season is a unique one. Finishing 11th in touchdown passes and 15th in passing yards, Jackson became the first QB MVP to finish outside the top ten in both metrics. However, Jackson, who led the Ravens to a 13-4 record and an AFC Championship Game appearance, earned the award by proving he could take down the best. 10 of the Ravens’ 13 victories would come against teams who finished the season with a winning record. Jackson also had 821 rushing yards, his highest mark since a 1005-yard season in 2020.

Saweetie Is Here To Stay: Reveals Bay Area Mount Rushmore, Talks “Immortal Freestyle” & 49ers Super Bowl Theme

In the past decade, we’ve witnessed Saweetie rise from freestyling in cars in Instagram videos to dominating pop culture. The Bay Area sweetheart admittedly hasn’t built quite the massive catalog just yet but her prominence, in her city and globally, is palpable. It’s what led to her collaboration with the San Francisco 49ers alongside P-Lo on “Do It For The Bay,” the team’s official Super Bowl anthem.

Evidently, “Do It For The Bay” is a full circle moment that hits especially close to home for Saweetie. This Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy in Las Vegas. Ahead of Game Day, Saweetie will help launch Smirnoff’s SMASH Vodka Soda (offered in four different flavors) at the first-ever Smirnoff SMASH Pickle Bowl. Smirnoff, the NFL’s Official Vodka Sponsor, will host the star-studded event on Saturday, February 10 from 2:30 pm – 4 pm PT at RedTail located at Resorts World. Saweetie and former NSYNC star Lance Bass partnered up as team Watermelon Lime and will face off against several high-profile celebrities, such as NFL Legend Vernon Davis and NFL commentator, Kay Adams.

Though she’s new to pickleball, Saweetie’s quite confident in what she’ll bring to the table on Saturday. “To be honest, I’ve never played pickleball but I grew up playing a lot of sports, so I’m pretty sure I can, I can learn it pretty quickly,” she tells HotNewHipHop. It’s this level of confidence and determination that has turned her into one of the most notable figures from the Bay Area, and quite frankly, allowed her to overcome adversity at every point. “Immortal Freestyle,” her latest release, speaks volumes about her mindset going into 2024. “I think that there have been several moments publicly and privately where I’ve just been, you know – a lot of people were questioning whether or not I was going to endure through those moments. That was my response, basically saying, like, ‘Yeah, I am and I’m here to stay,’” she says.

We recently caught up with Saweetie ahead of the Smirnoff SMASH Pickle Bowl to discuss the Super Bowl, what she expects from Usher’s halftime show and the Mount Rushmore of the Bay Area.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Hot New Hip Hop: You linked up with Smirnoff for the inaugural Smirnoff SMASH Pickle Bowl alongside several other celebrities. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pickleball skills?

Saweetie: To be honest, I’ve never played pickleball but I grew up playing a lot of sports, so I’m pretty sure I can, I can learn it pretty quickly.

Ahh, so it’s a fresh endeavor.

Definitely a fresh endeavor.

How do you do with new experiences in terms of trying out new sports and activities? Are you someone who thrives under pressure?

Definitely, and I’m really competitive, so I’m really excited to see what I can do with it.

Did they already tell you who you’re competing against?

There’s several people showing up so I’m pretty sure we’re gonna alternate.

In a hypothetical game of doubles, which of your rap peers would you call on as your partner?

Pickleball? I’m not sure, to be honest with you.

You’ve been a great brand partner and ambassador for a lot of companies over the years. Why did teaming up with Smirnoff make sense to you?

Well, I think it’s a great fusion of just sports, fashion – because my pickleball outfit is kind of cute – and just celebration. I felt like Smirnoff is a great company when it comes to being part of a great festivity. So, I feel like it’s a great fusion of of just all different industries coming into one.

You mentioned the outfit. Could you give us a little hint at what you’ll be rocking?

Well, I’ll definitely be in theme for the Smirnoff campaign. So, I’ll be in lime green and pink.

The upcoming Pickle Bowl comes after Smirnoff launched the Smirnoff SMASH Vodka Soda. Do you have a favorite flavor?

The watermelon lime.

By itself or do you mix it with something?

Oh, you know I love my concoctions. So, on the day of the event, I’ll probably be mixing up some drinks.

As you mentioned, you’re big on the concoctions. I’m wondering what’s the Saweetie specialty when it comes to Game Day food? Like, something that’s uniquely Saweetie.

Honestly, I’m really excited to see what kind of food that’s in the suite this year. But typically, they have the… what do you call it? The typical night game foods like hot dogs, burgers, and fries. So, there’s not too much I can make with that but I would recommend putting the fries on the burger. But, compared to what you guys have seen, I know that’s a light concoction. However, it’s always a pleasure seeing like some sushi in the suite because that lets me know that they got a budget and we like a big budget.

But when you’re at home on game day, is there anything, specifically, that you’d chef up?

Oh, for game day… I really like some crab with a seafood boil. But I have to eat like at the beginning of the game because if things start to get a little tense, my appetite goes away. My appetite is definitely tied to how my team is doing so Go Niners.

You and P-Lo connected with the 49ers for “Do It For The Bay.” How does it feel to be so tightly woven into the Bay Area’s culture these days, especially since you’re regarded as a global representative for your city? Not just from a hip-hop standpoint, either but in terms of modern-day Bay Area culture. How does it feel to work with these institutes that meant something to you growing up?

Honestly, sometimes it feels really surreal. When I had got the offer to make the theme for the playoffs, and now the Super Bowl song for my team, I was speechless. And the first person I called was P-Lo because I wanted to share the spotlight with somebody and because he is a producer, I felt like he was the perfect match for it. It’s like a dream come true because to become one of the people that people refer to as a Bay Area representative on a worldwide platform, it’s amazing.

Just to follow up on that, who is your Bay Area Mount Rushmore of rappers?

My top four – definitely, Mac Dre. My dad would play a lot of E-40 growing up so E-40. Three, I sampled two songs from Too $hort so definitely some Too $hort. And for my fourth…the Bay Area… I really got to think about that.

You can’t choose yourself, either. I know it’s usually the easiest route to take when asked these type of questions.

I feel like I got I feel like I got some more to accomplish before I slap myself on you know to Mount Rushmore.

If you couldn’t just choose one, who would be the fourth and fifth? They could rotate the fourth position.

I love me some Goapele, I feel like she did a lot for the Bay Area when we were kids. And for the fifth… I’m like flipping through my mind. I think I’m gonna leave it there for now.

One more thing, because I love to give me reasons. Because you know, the Bay Area has a very particular sound. And we’re often like, chastised for our sound and some people may say that we make local or regional music but what I love about Goapele, especially her song “Closer,” a lot of legendary rappers hopped on that because it was so infectious, not through the beat but just through her. So, shout out to Goapele.

Usher’s halftime performance is one of the most anticipated parts of the Super Bowl. Do you have a favorite halftime show?

My favorite halftime show of all time? … I know you only got a little bit of time, but I really be thinking, my bad. Honestly, I would have loved to see a Rolodex because I know there’s a lot more but personally, I love the Rihanna halftime show because I was there and I’m a big fan and my voice was gone. So that’s the most memorable halftime show to me because I was actually there in person.

Do you think Usher could top it this year?

I think each Super Bowl performance had a special moment, so I definitely think that he’s going to do that, especially since he’s such a multifaceted, talented artist. And I’m excited to say that I’m going to be there so I’ll definitely be able to witness that iconic performance in person.

Final question: it’s been almost been two years since you announced a release date for your debut album, Pretty B*tch Music. What’s the hold-up? Will we be seeing it drop in 2024?

Hopefully [laughs].

Is the “Immortal Freestyle” an indication of the direction you’re going in with the album?

I think the “Immortal Freestyle” was just a premise for how I felt this year. I think that there have been several moments publicly and privately where I’ve just been, you know – a lot of people were questioning whether or not I was going to endure through those moments. That was my response, basically saying, like, “Yeah, I am and I’m here to stay.”

The NFC Championship game was a thriller. After starting the game 27-7, the 49ers pulled off an epic comeback to win 34-31 over the Detriot Lions.

The key moment for the 49ers was a long pass from Brock Purdy, deflecting off the facemask of a Lions defender, and falling into the hands of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. That play resulted in a touchdown between the two Niners and invigorated Levi Stadium with energy.

“Obviously, nobody wins without a little luck,” San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams said. “Tonight was just our time to get it.”

“We need an explosive play and BA is one-on-one? I’m going to take that,” Purdy said. “I was giving my guy a shot.”

“I was surprised,” Aiyuk said. “I felt the look before, pre-snap, and that I had a chance to get the ball, but he just stayed on top. I don’t even know.”

Purdy threw for 267 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Niners running back Christian McCraffrey ran for 90 yards on 20 touches. He also had two touchdowns.

The Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, faced criticism during and after the game for decisions made when facing fourth down, going for it twice instead of taking field goals for a chance of points. In the first half, the Lions were getting whatever they wanted on offense, but the momentum flipped and the gambles became turnover on downs that cost the team.

The Niners will now face Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Kansas City Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday.

AFC & NFC Championship Games: Who Is Heading To The Super Bowl?

Just four teams remain in the NFL playoffs. Some were expected to be here; others were more surprising. In the AFC, the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs travel to the white-hot Baltimore Ravens. Meanwhile, the NFC sees the Detroit Lions attempt to make their first Super Bowl at the expense of the San Francisco 49ers. With both games scheduled for Sunday, HotNewHipHop has everything you need to know about the AFC & NFC Championship Games.

AFC: Chiefs @ Ravens

Where: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore

Odds: Baltimore -4

The Chiefs enter their sixth consecutive AFC Championship Game under very different circumstances to the previous five. For one, they aren’t hosting. And secondly, they are doing so after winning less than 12 games in the regular season. While the Chiefs still rule the AFC West, they don’t look like the powerhouse team that has made two of the last three Super Bowls. It’s not that the Chiefs are worse, it’s simply that the rest of the conference is catching up.

And that’s where their hosts, the Ravens, come in. After beginning the season unsure if Lamar Jackson would actually play, the team stormed to the league’s best record. However, this marks new territory for the team. They appear in their first Conference Championship Game since 2012, the year they won the Super Bowl. But the newness cuts both ways. The Ravens will get to enjoy their home-field Conference Championship Game in franchise history.

Can Kansas City Slow Down Baltimore?

The big question heading into this matchup will be whether the Chiefs can slow down Baltimore enough to let Patrick Mahomes ball out. Kansas City allowed the second-fewest yards per game during the regular season (289.8). However, their defense must contend with the league’s sixth-highest yardage team in Baltimore (370.4). There will be high expectations from the DT Chris Jones and CB Trent McDuffie, both All-Pro First Teamers for the Chiefs.

The key for Baltimore will be in the backfield. Unsurprisingly, given their prototypical dual-threat QB, Baltimore led the league in rushing yards per game this season (156.5). Conversely, the Chiefs allowed the 15th-most rushing yards during the regular season (113.2). If the Chiefs can’t stop the run, it’s going to be a long night for the red-and-white faithful.

Prediction: Ravens 20 – 17 Chiefs. Chiefs don’t allow the Ravens to ever run away with the game but just don’t have enough to neutralize the potency of Baltimore’s ground game.

NFC: Lions @ 49ers

Odds: San Francisco -7.5

The 49ers were here a year ago, on the cusp of a Super Bowl appearance. However, a spate of injuries saw them steamrolled by the Eagles. They were here the year before that, when they were 15 minutes from the Super Bowl before allowing 13 fourth-quarter points to lose to the Rams. Now they stand 60 minutes from another Super Bowl, with a former Mr. Irrelevant at quarterback. The NFC has been weird this year, with no one emerging as a clear favorite. However, the Niners have been one of the conference’s better teams. They are an offensive juggernaut (four offensive all-pro first-teamers) and are ready to flex that moniker all the way to a Lombardi.

However, they will have to overcome this year’s scrappy underdog. In 2008, the Detroit Lions went 0-16. Since that infamous season, they have appeared in the playoffs just four times. And now they are one game away from their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. The last time the Lions were in this position, it was 1957 and they were playing for a chance to appear in the pre-Super Bowl NFL Championship. But head coach Dan Campbell, the epitome of “never give up, never surrender” has turned the Lions into a team that their fans can finally believe in.

Who Wins The Backfield Duel?

Lions

The running game will absolutely define the NFC Championship. The 49ers have the league’s best running back in Christian McCaffery. McCaffery rushed for 1459 yards, nearly 300 more yards than the next best back in the league (Derrick Henry). However, the Lions have an elite backfield of their own. The two-pronged attack in Detroit begins with fifth-year back David Montgomery. After signing with the Lions ahead of the 2023 season, Montgomery rewarded the team with his first 1000-yard season since 2020. However, Montgomery isn’t alone. Many people questioned Detroit’s decision to take Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs 12th overall in the 2023 draft, especially after trading back from 6th overall. Well, Gibbs rushed for 945 yards in the regular season.

However, it’s not just about the run game for these two teams, it’s also about their run defense. The Lions and Niners are second and third respectively in run defense this season, with 0.9 yards per game separating them. Teams have simply not been able to drive out of the backfield against either team. This becomes a fascinating dynamic, however, when the opponent is someone with as prolific a run game as these two teams have. This means that whoever finds the edge in the backfield will hold the keys to this matchup.

Prediction: 49ers 30 – 23 Lions. This will likely be the game of the season. However, as much as the Lions deserve to be here and will keep it close, the Niners’ overwhelming offense gives them the edge here.

AFC/NFC Championship Games: Who Wins?
