Lana Del Rey’s Hip-Hop Connection Is Much Deeper Than Quavo

Today (July 3), Lana Del Rey linked up with Quavo to drop “Tough,” a new collaborative single. Del Rey — who is best known for ethereal, Americana-inspired music that typically has little to do with rap — doesn’t exactly live and breathe hip-hop. At least, that’s what you might believe if you haven’t been paying attention.

Yes, she usually collaborates with artists like Taylor Swift and Father John Misty, but the truth is that hip-hop has been an undercurrent of Del Rey’s career since pretty much the very start. To drive that point home, let’s go through a few highlights that illustrate Del Rey’s long-running connection to hip-hop.

2012 — “National Anthem”

The world met Del Rey on her debut major-label album, 2012’s Born To Die. The project spawned a number of singles, the most relevant one here being “National Anthem”: In the video, she plays Marilyn Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy, while she recruited ASAP Rocky to portray John F. Kennedy.

2015 — “Art Deco”

It was rumored that this song was about Azealia Banks, but Del Rey herself shut that narrative down, saying in an interview, “Definitely not. I have no idea where people got that from. I just don’t know what the correlation is. That song is actually about a group of teenagers who go out every night.”

That didn’t stop the two from getting into a Twitter spat in 2018, though, during which Del Rey showed her teeth: She invited Banks to “pull up” and declared, “I won’t not f*ck you the f*ck up.”

2017 — ASAP Rocky

Del Rey reunited with her “National Anthem” co-star on a couple of occasions in 2017: Rocky featured on “Summer Bummer” (as did Playboi Carti) and “Groupie Love” from the Lust For Life album.

2021 — Chemtrails Over The Country Club

When Del Rey revealed the album’s cover in 2021, she received some push-back over the apparent lack of racial variety among the people featured in the art. In response, she wrote in part on social media, “My best friends are rappers, my boyfriends have been rappers…. My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a WOC/POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital, I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it.”

(Per Harper’s Bazaar, Del Rey’s dating history includes G-Eazy; He’s the only rapper listed, but perhaps Del Rey has had some other relationships go under the radar.)

2021 — Migos

Del Rey manifested her Quavo collab in 2021 when she named Migos as the artist she’d most like to work with, saying, “I love them. Everything they do. There was kind of like a new revolution of sound 11 years ago in the singer-songwriter community, which I loved seeing. And then with Migos, I think they kicked off a new super fun, super autobiographical, completely different style of rap. I love them.”

2024 — Sexyy Red

Lana got in a good hang with Sexyy Red at this year’s Hangout Festival: The two made some waves online with their joint twerk session.

2024 — Quavo

Del Rey and Quavo were at the center of some dating rumors a few months ago, but Quavo explained, “We having hits,” ultimately teeing up their new song and bringing this timeline to an end.

Eminem Isn’t Detroit’s Favorite Rapper, According To Rising Motor City Star Skilla Baby

Eminem might well be one of the most successful rappers from Detroit, but according to one of the Motor City’s rising stars, he’s not a hometown favorite. Skilla Baby, who has been experiencing a breakout over the past year thanks to collabs with Rob49, Sada Baby, and Tee Grizzley, told Keke Palmer on her podcast (the aptly titled Baby, This Is Keke Palmer) that Detroit actually doesn’t have any favorites after being asked about the “Houdini” rapper.

“Numbers wise, Eminem is the best Detroit rapper, but the gag is nobody would say that in Detroit,” he said. “Everybody had a turn being Detroit’s favorite rapper. Sada Baby had a turn, Tee Grizzley had a turn, Babyface Ray had a turn, Veeze is one of Detroit’s best rappers, Baby Smoove. Everybody had their turn being the best in the city. What we lack is consistency. Nobody has consistently been Detroit’s favorite rapper.”

Lest he be accused of haterism, Skilla Baby explainedI’m a fan of Eminem but do we consider him our best rapper? I don’t think Detroit does… No shade to anybody names I left off. Detroit is full of great rappers and I can’t forget Kash Doll, Big Sean, and Dej [Loaf], of course.”

Quavo & Lana Del Rey Are Built “Tough” On Genre-Bending Single

Lana Del Rey is returning to the realm of hip-hop as she joins ATL superstar Quavo for “Tough”. This is their first-ever collaboration, and it marks the most recent occasion in which the vocalist is working with a rapper. The last time the New York City native teamed up with one came back in 2017 with Lust For Life. Lana could be heard with A$AP Rocky and Playboi Carti on that project, but she has strayed away from that sound for a while now. However, that all changes with Quavo on “Tough”, although this one has a country twang to it.

According to Pitchfork, this has a possibility of landing on her forthcoming 10th album, Lasso. The tape is expected to be released sometime this September; however, no official release date is known. On “Tough”, Quavo and Lana Del Rey are expressing how tough life and love can be at times. But if you willing to stay strong and push through, both will richly reward you. It seems that each artist is melodically crooning about their relationship together and it is quite beautiful, frankly. Quavo’s auto-tuned voice mixed with Lana’s smooth and breathy delivery are a nice combination. Furthermore, the instrumental is not overdone and features dirty trap drums and country guitars.

Listen To “Tough” By Quavo & Lana Del Rey

Quotable Lyrics:

Come on, take a ride with me
Like the 808s beatin’ in the trunk in Atlanta, it was tough
It was kinda hard for me
Crawlin’ through the mud, I couldn’t find love, then we came up
Look at what we are, baby
Standin’ through the storm, still shinin’ like a diamond in the rough

Ice Spice & Central Cee Further Fuel Dating Rumors With Shopping Spree

Ice Spice and Central Cee have further fueled rumors that they’re dating after going on a shopping spree in the United Kingdom on Wednesday. They had previously been spotted cruising in Cee’s blue Lamborghini Urus SUV. Hitting the town, Spice rocked an all-pink matching outfit while Cee wore a black hoodie on top of black pants.

When DJ Akademiks shared a clip of the two on Instagram, fans had mixed responses. One user critiqued the idea of shopping for a romantic partner. “Spending your money on a woman you barely know will forever be crazy to me,” they wrote. Another theorized it’s all just a PR move: “This is all PR! She needs this more than him. Remember her streaming numbers have dropped tremendously.”

Central Cee previously discussed Spice during an interview with Complex, last year, explaining that she reminds him of himself. “She reminds me of me a bit… she’s cool innit,” he said at the time. “Humble, down to earth, don’t really care too much about the shiny stuff; but knows how to play the game. You can hear that in the music, and see that in the moves that she makes, and I appreciate that because some people don’t really know what they’re doing, and they take it for granted or they don’t take the opportunity and run with it — but she’s really running with it right now.”

Megan Thee Stallion Shows Off Her Trip To Japan In Music Video For “Otaku Hot Girl”

Megan Thee Stallion is a little bit of nerd if you were not aware already. That is especially true in relation to her love of the Japanese culture and the world of anime. Earlier this year, the H-Town Hottie became a Hiroshima Hottie, as she explored Tokyo and all it had to offer. Her fans, and lots of thirsty men alike, were absolutely loving the cosplay thirst traps she was feeding them. Furthermore, it seemed like Megan had a great time throughout her trip because some of that fandom makes it onto her self-titled LP. There are two tracks on MEGAN that display this adoration, and those include “Mamushi” and “Otaku Hot Girl”. In terms of the song itself, the latter is one of the catchiest on the record. It features the hitmaker spit some speedy flows, all while including some nods to anime characters. Because of all of these reasons, it is no surprise that “Otaku Hot Girl” is one of the few tracks to receive a music video.

Unlike the visuals for “BOA”, which are extremely flashy and seamlessly edited, “Otaku Hot Girl” is more of a B-roll. It includes various clips and photos from Megan’s trip to Japan. From trying to the local grub to walking in different stores, it includes it all. There is also a sneak peek of the photo shoot for the Hot Girl Summer Tour promo, which is a cool touch. For Megan, she continues to be at the top of her game. This set of visuals comes after an opening BET Award Show performance and an interview with Shannon Sharpe. This is her world, and we are just existing in it.

Lupita Nyong’o Reflects on Chadwick Boseman’s Cancer Death That Helped Her Portrayal in Box Office Hit ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’

image

Lupita Nyong’o has shared that the death of her close friend and Black Panther co-star, Chadwick Boseman, from colon cancer in August 2020 profoundly impacted her while working on A Quiet Place: Day One.

Boseman’s private battle with cancer and his passing at the age of 43 left Nyong’o deeply shaken. Reflecting on this experience, she told an outlet, “It shook me to my core.” We all miss Chadwick. He was more than just an actor but an inspiration and champion for everyone – not just just within the culture but all those fighting cancer and more.

Get this, the 41-year-old actress found her work on the film to be therapeutic. “I definitely was thinking about that a lot,” she explained. “What I came to realize is that it’s really important to be reminded of our mortality because then we live life just a little more intentionally. When we think we have all the time in the world, we can really take people for granted and experiences for granted.”

When it comes to the performance of A Quiet Place: Day One, the film has been performing well at the box office. After it’s opening weekend, A Quiet Place: Day One finished in second place behind Inside Out 2, one of the biggest films of all time, surpassing the openings of its predecessors, with a $53 million start compared to the $50 million and $47 million openings of the first two films. Boom. Or should we say “Shhhh …” The original film had a budget of $17 million, while the sequel’s budget was $61 million. Day One, with a budget of $67 million, is the most expensive in the franchise. The first two films, largely carried by Emily Blunt, grossed over $638 million. Day One, anchored by Lupita Nyong’o, would need the highest worldwide gross of the series to reach the billion-dollar mark. So this installment costs way more than the first with even more allocated to marketing but it’s performing well, so we’ll see how it all ends.

A Quiet Place: Day One is currently in theaters and is set to stream on Paramount+ in the coming months. Gonna check it out? We think ya’ll should!

Rapper B.G. Was Ordered To Have All Future Songs Approved By The Government — How Did We Get Here?

Last year, Louisiana rapper B.G. was released from federal prison after serving a 10-year stint for illegal gun possession. However, a new report today suggests that he won’t be returning to business as usual right away. According to The Guardian and other sources, it turns out the onetime Hot Boy must now submit his songs for approval before release as a condition of his parole.

US district court judge Susie Morgan issued the ruling as a sort of compromise with prosecutors, who wanted the rapper barred from putting out any music “promoting and glorifying future gun violence/murder.” Instead, Morgan ruled that he must turn his lyrics over to the government prior to putting out or promoting any songs he planned to use them in, and may be asked to change them should they fall short of “the goals of rehabilitation.”

B.G. was originally signed to Cash Money Records as a member of the group Hot Boys, which also boasted Lil Wayne and Juvenile among its members (Turk was the fourth member, but for some reason, a lot of people seem to forget Turk). B.G.’s biggest hit was the slang-spawning “Bling Bling” (featuring all the other members of Hot Boys, as well as Mannie Fresh and Cash Money founder Birdman, then going by Baby). However, he was arrested in 2009 after being pulled over by New Orleans police, who found three guns after searching his SUV. Two had been reported stolen.

In December 2011, B.G. pled guilty to two counts of possession of a firearm and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, resulting in a 14-year sentence. He was released last September, but was arrested in March for parole violations after he performed at a concert in Las Vegas, Nevada with Boosie and released a mixtape with Gucci Mane, Choppers & Bricks. Prosecutors said this constituted associating with known felons, and censured his lyrics on the tape.

Rap fans have criticized the news on Twitter, saying it violates B.G.’s freedom of speech. The legal treatment of rap lyrics has come under scrutiny in the wake of high-profile trials like the racketeering case against Young Thug, which alleges the Atlanta rapper participated in gang activity purely based on lyrics mentioning alleged gang “YSL” — which is also the name of his record label. Such practices have prompted some lawmakers to introduce legislation specifically protecting rap music from prosecution.

Mariah The Scientist Pleads Not Guilty To Battery After Alleged Club Fight

Earlier this year, footage of Mariah The Scientist and a woman named Cleopatra Dues allegedly getting into a brawl at an Atlanta club left social media users shocked. Reportedly, Dues told police that Mariah allegedly approached her and ripped off her wig, then proceeded to drag her across the floor of Cavo Kitchen and Cocktail Lounge. She insists that she never interacted with Mariah until the alleged incident.

In May, Mariah was arrested and charged with simple battery. Now, according to court documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop, she’s pleaded not guilty. Moreover, her attorney Brian Steel has asked for a jury trial. She’s yet to address the debacle but may do so soon in court.

Unfortunately for Mariah, her own legal woes aren’t the only ones she’s dealing with these days. Her boyfriend Young Thug is also currently behind bars on RICO charges. His high-profile trial was put on hold earlier this week. The defense filed a motion for Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville to recuse himself due to an ex parte meeting with prosecutors and witness Kenneth Copeland. The trial won’t continue until another judge reviews the case. Glanville also plans to release a transcript of his meeting with Copeland “so everyone will have a chance to look at it.”

It’s unclear exactly how long this could take. The trial is already the longest in state history, however, and doesn’t look like it’ll be coming to a close anytime soon. What do you think of Mariah The Scientist pleading not guilty to battery? What about her attorney Brian Steel asking for a jury trial?
