While Ice Spice’s debut album Y2K!didn’t exactly set the world on fire, it’s generally agreed that the standout song is “Popa.” Naturally, that’s the latest song from the project to get the music video treatment, and the video is, well, basically a strip club commercial. There are lots of G-strings and BBLs and pretty much everybody is twerking for most of its two-minute, 40-second runtime. Don’t watch it at your desk, is what I’m saying here.
Ice Spice and her entire generation have come to prominence under a truly ridiculous amount of scrutiny. That she’s able to shake it off, stick to her guns, and continue to deliver is something to admire, even if you don’t always agree with the content.
With the release of his upcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, The Weeknd looks to complete a trilogy of projects begun by his 2020 album, After Hours, and continued by its 20022 followup, Dawn FM. Trilogies are something of a recurring theme for the Canadian superstar, as it was his trio of haunting mixtapes (2011’s House Of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence) that first put him on the map as a moody, mysterious musician with a multilayered approach to songwriting. He’s expanded on that reputation ever since, transforming so completely for each new release, that he’s become music’s biggest concept artist.
In starting his current, ongoing trilogy, The Weeknd not only took a big musical swing in a new sonic direction, but he also crafted a bizarre character to suit the glittering, synth-heavy sounds. While he kicked off the rollout for After Hours by introducing his red-and-black suit and retro stunna shades in the video for “Heartless,” it was the follow-up video for “Blinding Lights” that truly set the tone for the After Hours era; the bloodied protagonist, wandering the Las Vegas strip to the pulse-pounding sounds of synthwave created the unsettling contrast that would define that album’s messaging.
With each new visual from the album, that unsettling vibe got more and more horrific. The After Hours short film found Red being compelled by unseen forces, while the gory “In Your Eyes” video subverted its own horror-thriller tropes, ending with Red decapitated by the woman he appeared to be stalking throughout the clip. By the time of the “Too Late” video, Red’s head had been transplanted onto a new body by plastic surgery addicts in Beverly Hills, setting up the eye-popping, puffy-faced version from the “Save Your Tears” video, which ended on yet another ambivalent note, with Red finally getting something akin to closure.
Like the preceding era, the change over to Dawn FM happened gradually. The “Take My Breath” video carried over some of its predecessor’s attributes, but now, Abel’s suit was black-on-black, the violence was toned down and more psychosexual. If the After Hours visuals were concerned with the violence inherent in the pursuit of the hedonistic lifestyle enjoyed by Red, then Dawn FM‘s visuals looked at the sexual and social repercussions thereof. Black finds himself trapped in a soul-stealing ritual in the video for “Sacrifice,” ending the video with his youth stripped away.
In “Gasoline,” he’s haunted by ghoulish specters and a youthful doppelgänger that taunt him at what appears to be a crowded nightclub. The elder Black returns to get revenge on his double in “Out Of Time,” only to find himself losing his identity even further in the voyeuristic video for “Is There Someone Else?” Musically, Dawn FM slides all over the dial, from easy listening to pulsating EDM. In describing the album’s themes, he likened it to “being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel” in a state of purgatory after death.
If anything, “Dancing In The Flames,” the first video from Hurry Up Tomorrow reinforces and doubles down on that idea, featuring yet another Weeknd character getting into a violent encounter, this time, ending up on the wrong side of a face-off with a semi truck. His latest character ends up wandering a ghostly wasteland and seeing a light that could represent the afterlife. Fans have speculated that if Dawn FM was about Purgatory and that made After Hours about Hell, then perhaps Hurry Up Tomorrow will find Abel entering the Pearly Gates.
Or not. If anything, the Toronto native is famous for his swerves, for offering up the unexpected, and for crafting projects that defy expectations. While it could be argued that he might be getting overly reliant on these convoluted narratives to tell his stories — even on stage, he’s been known to incorporate characters, like his The Idol antihero Tedros, or whatever the knockoff MF DOOM thing he did in Spain was supposed to be — the truth is, this constant reinvention has been a huge part of building his popularity to what it is today. By letting his imagination run wild, he keeps finding fertile new veins of creativity that keep him at the top of his craft.
Ice Spice is still rolling out her new album Y2K!, and wants to show that it can still electrify a party. Moreover, the music video for “Popa” just released, and given its multiple visuals involving a strip club and a whole lot of shaking rumps, it’s pretty NSFW. Elsewhere, she also flaunts her private jet, vibes out on top of a luxury car, and parties all around. While not everyone in the world was a fan of the Bronx femcee’s latest output, she certainly hasn’t lost any motivation to keep her foot on the gas. It seems like she’s already working on her next step, which is exactly how you should handle criticism no matter whether or not it’s valid.
Elsewhere, Ice Spice is just enjoying the fruits of her fame, spreading her image and artistry around to every corner she can find that will take her. For example, she recently linked up with Madonna at a Luar New York Fashion Week show, one of many huge celebrity crossovers that she’s enjoyed over the years. We don’t know much about next moves, though, especially considering how frantic and busy of a year 2024 was for the hitmaker. But we know she has plenty of extracurricular avenues to develop, and plenty of time right now to think it over.
However, Ice Spice also has to contend with a lot of naysayers, even within the rap game. During a recent talent scout session with Funny Marco, Latto seemed to shade her by comparing her to a female rapper who tried out and, in the Atlanta femcee’s view, underwhelmed. “It gives me like… Ice Spice, probably,” she remarked. “It was like, ‘I’m so cute, grah.’”
But a lot of folks out there also know that the hate for Ice Spice (disregarding controversial allegations around her behavior) could come from pretty biased and misguided places. “B***hes hate Spice cuz n***as love spice,” Fivio Foreign recently tweeted, speculating as to why she gets so much negative attention. If the music just isn’t your thing, then we can’t pretend like this new “Popa” music video will convince you. Yet sadly, a lot of critics seem to forget that they can hold that simple opinion instead of turning it into vitriol.

DeMar DeRozan’s role in Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s viral beef has been nothing short of controversial. The basketball player appeared onstage at Kendrick’s eagerly anticipated Pop Out show in LA this summer, suggesting that he was backing the Compton native. This sparked rumors that he and Drake had a falling out, but he insists this isn’t true.
DeRozan later appeared in the eagerly anticipated music video for “Not Like Us,” seemingly solidifying his allegiance to Kendrick. On the track, Kendrick accuses Drizzy and his OVO crew of being “pedophiles.” One might expect that to have marked the end of DeRozan and Drake’s friendship. According to him, however, they’re still on good terms.
During his recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, DeRozan opened up about his cameo in the music video, and his stance on the feud overall. He explained that while he has love for both Kendrick and Drake, he’s from Compton at the end of the day. “That comes first before anything,” he said. “I feel like any real person would understand that.” As for whether or not he’s spoken to Drake since all of this went down, he admits he hasn’t.
DeRozan went on to weigh in on Kendrick being scheduled to headline the Super Bowl LIX Halftime show in New Orleans. Despite countless fans and peers being outraged that Lil Wayne wasn’t chosen instead, he says he’s looking forward to it. Again, he attributes this to being from Compton and being able to relate more to Kendrick because of it. What do you think of DeMar DeRozan opening up about his appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” music video? What about him claiming to love both Kendrick and Drake? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.
Terrace Martin is best known for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s last few albums, most notably 2015’s To Pimp A Butterfly, but he is also a talented solo artist in his own right. The jazz-fusion extraordinaire returns with Nintindo Soul, his second album of 2024. The album features several singers and rappers, including Arin Ray, Cautious Clay, Buddy, and JasonMartin (formerly known as Problem) to name a few. Martin’s Dinner Party bandmate 9th Wonder makes an appearance as well on the track “Forever,” which was released as a single.
Terrace Martin’s latest effort is the follow-up to Grounded, his previous full-length release, as well as the three EPs he’s delivered in 2024. It sounds similar to the Dinner Party releases (Dinner Party is the supergroup composed of Martin, Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, and the aforementioned 9th Wonder). This album favors a more neo-soul sound than jazz. It also sounds like the background music at a small get-together, and much of Martin’s music as a solo artist has a similar sound. Terrace Martin’s music has a generally pleasant aesthetic, and this album is no different. It is easy to listen to. Moreover, it is even easier to like. If you’re a fan of neo-soul, jazz, R&B, or all three, you are sure to enjoy his latest release. If you do like this one, check out his other releases this year. Stream Nintindo Soul below.

On Thursday (Sept. 12), Rick Ross joined Yung Miami as the latest special guest of “Caresha Please.” Over their nearly hour-long conversation, the Port of Miami rapper talked about getting into a brawl in Vancouver, his fallout with Drake, and whether there’s a chance they could patch things up.
Sometimes love is a losing game. Joey Badass has certainly expressed this thought a time or two before in his music. But so has Uproxx cover star Chlöe. So, it is only right that the two (at times) skeptics of love come together to air out their grievances.
On Joey Badass’ new song, “Tell Me” featuring Chlöe, romantic paranoia takes center stage. “More money, more problems” has been an anecdotal fixture in rap tracks, but so has more famous, more lustful eyes. Joey Badass carefully navigates this tightrope all across “Tell Me.”
“Tell me, why you in love with me / Is it money or the fame / Or the fact that I’m livin’ in a lab, but it’s luxury / Tell me why all of suddenly you wanna come kiss up with me / Used to pass a n**** by like tumbleweed / Used to play me by the side ’til I got a little buzz like a bumblebee / Now you can’t get enough of me / Why you fallin’ in love with me,” raps Joey.
Chlöe echoes this inquisitive spirit through the chorus, repetitively singing: “Tell me why you really in love.”
The only thing left to wonder is if the track will be green lit for an official video. Joey Badass previously guest starred in Chlöe’s visual for “Cheat Back.” Now, fans are curious if round two of their on-screen chemistry is on the way.
