Uproxx Music 20: Seafood Sam Stays Cool, Calm, And Collected In The West Coast Breeze On ‘Standing On Giant Shoulders’
Even during the year’s hottest months, Seafood Sam manages to stay cool, calm, and collected. The Long Beach rapper lives in a world that blends nostalgia and modernity. Furthermore, Sam does things his way — when and wherever he wants. Look no further than him giving his dog the most lavish and exuberant at-home spa treatments possible. Much of this unrestricted individuality lives on his new album Standing On Giant Shoulders.
The giant shoulders mentioned in the album’s title are James Brown, Bobby Brown, and Miles Davis — a trio of soul singers that inspire Sam’s creative process. This inspiration takes shape on tracks like “Pearly Gates Playlist” as Sam takes an introspective approach to confronting the male ego while “Can’t Take The Hood To Heaven” supplies a lush hook for a reminder to make something of yourself while you can. “Cowboy Leather” with Pink Sifu brandishes a symphony of flutes, strings, and an ear-pleasing bass line while “Attack Of The Dreadlocks” with Rae Khalil makes use of summery guitar strings for a warning to those who get in the way of Sam’s grind and hustle.
All in all, Seafood Sam’s Standing On Giant Shoulders thrives by bridging the gap between Sam’s inspirations and the current world he raps in. The album’s unique experience moves the soul and settles the mind for an overall feeling that listeners will certainly want more of.
With the album out now and in rotation, we caught up with Seafood Sam to learn more about him for this week’s Uproxx Music 20 column. Scroll down to learn more about the Long Beach rapper’s inspirations, influences, and aspirations.

What is your earliest memory of music?
I remember being really young in the car with my mom and Zapped & Roger’s “I Wanna Be Your Man” came on and I lost it… asking who’s the artist and what other songs do they sing, I instantly got full invested. (Same with Teena Marie).
Who inspired you to take music seriously?
Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y. Once I heard “Kush & OJ” and “Covert Coupe,” music was no longer a hobby.
Do you know how to play an instrument? If so, which one? If not, which instrument do you want to learn how to play?
Naw, not yet. But give me two ballpoint pens and any desk/table and I’m making beats for days. But I’d like to learn the saxophone or piano.
What was your first job?
Working at this skate shop in the Long Beach town center.
What is your most prized possession?
Won’t say it’s the 1st or 2nd most prized, but I will say my Allen Iverson rookie card.
What is your biggest fear?
I don’t think about what I fear.
Who is on your rap Mt. Rushmore?
I always recycle through the same 7 names but as of today I’ll go with Lil Wayne, André 3000, Roc Marciano, & Snoop Dogg.
You get 24 hours to yourself to do anything you want, with unlimited resources: What are you doing? And spare no details!
Real Estate. Own a whole city worth of properties (sell some, rent some out & give some out to those in need… you know that forever income)
What are your three most used emojis?
, , and .
What’s a feature you need to secure before you die?
Sade.
If you could appear in a future season of a current TV show, which one would it be and why?
I don’t watch TV that much and even though it’s not currently running I would’ve love to be a voice on The Boondocks cause it’s so many legendary people that worked on that show — R.I.P. John Witherspoon.
Which celebrity do you admire or respect for their personality and why?
Denzel Washington. From what I’ve seen, he’s always cool, calm & professional.
Share your opinion on something no one could ever change your mind about.
Waffles better than pancakes.
What is the best song you’ve ever heard in your life and what do you love about it?
“On My Way” by Suga Free. It’s 10/10.
What’s your favorite city in the world to perform, and what’s a city you’re excited to perform in for the first time?
Hometown shows are always fun, but I can’t lie, recently performing in Brooklyn was insane. I love the energy over there. I’d like to do a world tour and perform everywhere that wanna see me.
You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location where it would be held.
I’m bringing the show home to Long Beach with performances by Sade, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg of course, me & I’ll let the homies rock out the opening slot.
What would you be doing now if it weren’t for music?
Probably working a 9-5 job trying to figure out how to get into music.
If you could see five years into the future or go five years into the past, which one would you pick and why?
Future… I already seen what happened 5 years ago.
What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?
No advice really, maybe just a few money moves to be aware of. Cause everything’s happening how it was suppose to.
It’s 2050. The world hasn’t ended, and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?
The smoothest & coolest.

Megan Thee Stallion Is A Venomous Vixen In Music Video For “Mamushi”
Megan Thee Stallion’s comeback has been one of much success. Her self-titled third studio album MEGAN performed very well in its first week, selling a respectable 64,000 copies. That was good enough for a number three debut on the Billboard Hot 200 and it’s currently sitting at number 40. A lot of tracks have been garnering a lot of love from fans and one of them is Megan Thee Stallion and Yuki Chiba’s “Mamushi”. The track is an ode to her adoration for Japan and its culture, and her being able pay respect to it on her biggest album has to have felt good. Since it landed on the Hot 100 five weeks ago, the track has not left and right now it’s in at the 36th slot.
It makes sense why it remains pretty high too. “Mamushi” is one of the slickest and catchiest songs on the record thanks to Megan’s melody on the chorus. Additionally, her rapping in Japanese alongside Yuki Chiba was a fun addition. At some point, a music video was bound to come to fruition and that day is today, according to Uproxx. There were some hints of this being in the works in late July, as she announced the filming of the video in Japan was getting underway on her IG. The video is a creative one, as there appears to be a fun callback to Rush Hour 2. A man walks into spa and selects Megan to be his masseuse. However, she transforms into Japan’s deadliest snake, the Mamushi, and kills him. In fact, anytime a man leers at her, she turns into this venomous reptile. It’s another way of alluding to Megan shedding her past and the men she deems no good.

Blueface Receives Four-Year Prison Sentence For Probation Violation
Blueface has been behind bars since January when he turned himself in for an alleged probation violation. Today, he was scheduled to appear in court for a sentencing hearing, where he’d finally learn his fate. The hearing was originally expected to take place late last month but was ultimately delayed, leaving the rapper’s fans and loved ones more eager than ever to see what takes place. It was possible that he would be released and be able to finally go home to his family. Unfortunately, however, that’s not what played out.
In anticipation, Blueface’s father Johnathan Porter Sr. hopped online to share a heartfelt message with supporters. He asked them to pray for him and his son and expressed hope that the judge would go easy on him in court. Porter Sr. later provided followers with an update, according to DJ Akademiks, revealing that Blueface was sentenced to four years in prison.

Blueface’s Father Reacts To His Son’s Sentence
For obvious reasons, he appeared heartbroken and wished his son luck. Blueface’s father isn’t the only one of his parents who was pushing for his release, however. His mother Karlissa Saffold has also been particularly vocal about her son’s legal issues. She even requested the help of Kim Kardashian earlier this year. Saffold told TMZ last month that she has a welcome home party planned for Blueface, which will have to be pushed back by quite a bit.
Blueface is certainly a polarizing figure, but social media users were also hoping that he would return home sooner rather than later, if only for the sake of his youngest child. Chrisean Jr.’s mother Chrisean Rock is also currently incarcerated and might be looking at an eight-year sentence for drug charges. What do you think of Blueface’s father revealing that the rapper was sentenced to four years in prison? Share your thoughts in the comments section down below and keep an eye on HNHH for more updates.

Megan Thee Stallion Unveils “MAMUSHI” Music Video Filmed in Tokyo
Three-time Grammy award-winning superstar Megan Thee Stallion has released the new music video for her global hit “MAMUSHI (feat. Yuki Chiba).” Filmed in Tokyo, Japan, the video features Japanese actor Shô Kasamatsu, known for his roles in acclaimed series like “Tokyo Vice” and “Gannibal.” Directed by Kevin “Onda” Leyva and produced by Tokyo-based creative company PUSH Japan, the visual is a stunning display of cultural and cinematic fusion.
In the video, Megan transforms into a mamushi—a venomous Japanese viper—and partners with Yuki to take down gangsters invading her spa. She then uses the souls of the deceased gangsters to create an army of blue-faced soldiers, paying homage to Akira Kurosawa’s 1990 film “DREAMS.”
The Houston native filmed at various Tokyo locations, including Tsurumaki Onsen Jinya for the spa scene and Engaku-ji Temple, a prominent Zen Buddhist site. Megan sports Japanese latex label Kurage, paired with a custom white bandeau and skirt designed by Matthew Reisman. She also continues her snake motif with a back tattoo of an Ouroboros, symbolizing the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth that defines her latest album, “MEGAN.”
“MAMUSHI” has already generated over 150 million global streams and is surging in the Top-50 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song also reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart in Japan. The video release follows Megan’s five MTV Video Music Awards nominations, including Best Hip-Hop and Best Collaboration.

Eyewear Styling Tips from Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Cowboy Carter Eras
Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter era is upon us, and the pop superstar did not disappoint. Queen B earned the number one spot on the Billboard 200 with the new album’s debut, which featured country songs that alluded to the Wild West. Recently, Bey even surprised fans by introducing American Olympians in anticipation of the 2024 Paris Games. Performing a tailored version of her song “Ya Ya,” the Grammy winner introduced the athletes while decked out in the country-inspired attire she’s been rocking for this album. Also referred to as ‘Act II,’ Cowboy Carter is the second installment in Beyoncé’s three-part project, which started with Renaissance in 2022 and also topped the Billboard 200.
Both albums have birthed iconic songs that listeners can enjoy for years to come. But aside from timeless music, the Renaissance and Cowboy Carter eras also left fans in raptures over Bey’s iconic statement pieces, especially her eyewear. From over-the-top sunnies to classic eyewear pieces, Beyoncé sure knows how to sport specs that make a lasting impression. Below, we take a look at eyewear styling tips from the Renaissance and Cowboy Carter eras.
Sport bejeweled shades
Nothing screams decadence more than wearing bejeweled sunglasses, which is exactly what Beyoncé did during her Renaissance world tour when she sported a custom-made version of Tiffany & Co.’s sunnies adorned with crystals. If you want to emulate the same divine diva look but in a more everyday-friendly way, you can also wear a pair of crystal-like women’s sunglasses. Prada’s PR 17WS model, in particular, features clear frames that look like they’ve been cut out of the clearest diamonds. As such, they create a more subtle but equally effective bejeweled look. You can pair your sparkling eyewear with fashionable pieces like gowns or blazers to help you stand out from the crowd, just like Queen Bey.
Opt for shield sunnies that go with everything
Aside from sold-out world tours and best-selling albums, Beyoncé also knows a thing or two about selling a look. Her Cowboy Carter outfits are no exception, which all showcase her versatility when it comes to creating statement pieces. During Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s exclusive Oscars soirée earlier this year, Bey showcased stylish tailoring with a Western flair, accessorized by a wide-brimmed cowboy hat and shield sunnies. Shield sunnies, as showcased by Beyoncé herself, can be paired with any style of clothes – be it business attire or more casual clothing – and add a sophisticated yet futuristic touch to your look. Case in point, she wore shield sunglasses another time to attend Pharrell Williams’ menswear clothing debut. This time, she paired them with a bright yellow pajama set. To copy Beyoncé’s style, you can try similar shield specs from brands like Alaïa, though you can go smaller to suit your preference and face shape.
Elevate a look with classic styles
There are some sunnies styles that have a legacy as staple pieces, including timeless aviators. Queen B’s western outfits in the Cowboy Carter era aren’t afraid to call back to the classics, which can be seen in an Instagram post where she wore aviators and a denim-on-denim piece that seemingly alluded to her Levii’s Jeans track from the new album. While on tour, the singer also wore this type of eyewear among the many iconic shades she featured as part of her many costume changes. You can sport a similar style by wearing Ray-Ban Aviator sunglasses and pairing them with anything denim to help you achieve a classic, polished look like Beyoncé.
Wear cat-eye sunglasses to look chic
During an after-party event at the premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé in Brazil, Bey looked stunning in her cat-eye sunglasses while wearing an all-denim, hand-beaded embellishment outfit that didn’t fail to wow the crowd. While the statement piece looked comfortable (yet luxurious) for a plane outfit, the cat-eye frames added a chic and feminine style to her look. You can mimic the same look by wearing cat-eye sunnies like Dolce & Gabbana’s DG 4439 on top of casual clothes to help you achieve understated elegance.
From sold-out tours and blockbuster hits to eye-catching fashion pieces, Beyoncé’s Renaissance and Cowboy Carter eras are filled with iconic moments. Be sure to follow these eyewear styling tips to help you channel Queen Bey’s energy.

Ambré Delivers New Mixtape “i do this sh*t in my sleep”
Grammy award-winning R&B singer-songwriter, musician, and producer Ambré has announced the release of her new mixtape, “i do this sh*t in my sleep.” This six-track project serves as a soundtrack to vulnerability and authenticity, featuring Grammy-nominated singer Alex Isley and fellow hometown artist Treety.
“i do this sh*t in my sleep” takes listeners on a playful journey of cat and mouse and sensual love-making with tracks like “SWV,” “Sideways,” and “Perfect Timing.” Although it has the structure of an EP with a cohesive storyline from start to finish, Ambré insists that it is merely a sneak peek into something bigger and timeless.
“This is not an album… I didn’t spend months working on these songs. These are a collection of demos,” Ambré said. “But if you like them then you’ll love what’s to come… because I’m working on the greatest album of all time.”
This mixtape follows her soulful cover of Robin Thicke’s “Lost Without U” and comes after her recent project, “who’s loving you?,” which features production from Jay Versace on “BAD HABITS” and a feature from Mack Keane on “ELEVATE.”
“who’s loving you?” is an extension of her 2022 project “3000°,” which pays homage to New Orleans legends Juvenile’s “400 Degreez” and Lil Wayne’s “500 Degreez.” Ambré earned her first Billboard No. 1 on the Adult R&B Airplay chart with her single “I’m Baby,” featuring British singer/songwriter Jvck James from “3000°.”
