EXCLUSIVE: Busta Rhymes & Swizz Beatz Are The Reason Scar Lip Is Managed By Mona-Scott Young

Busta Rhymes & Swizz Beatz Are The Reason Scar Lip Is Managed By Mona-Scott Young

Mona Scott-Young deserves all her flowers. Not only did she play in instrumental role in some of Hip-Hop’s greatest names, such as Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes, she’s also the genius behind the Love & Hip Hop franchise.

Fast forward to today, Mona Scott-Young is excited as ever with the release of her new film on BET+ called Love & Murder: Atlanta Playboy. The two-part series stars an all-star cast, including Taye Diggs, Keesha Sharp, Ciera Payton, Apryl Jones, and more. The title is exactly what you can expect: an Atlanta playboy named Lance is mysteriously murdered, and the investigation for the killer results in some of his deepest, darkest secrets coming to light.

Beyond film and her entrepreneurship, Mona recently put on the manager hat. This time, it’s for a buzzing artist named Scar Lip, whom have gotten standout co-signs from Cardi B, Mary J. Blige, Busta Rhymes, Swizz Beatz, and many more. In fact, Mona is the reason Scar Lip is signed to Epic Records (via Sylvia Rhone)!

The Source had the opportunity to speak with Mona-Scott Young about how she connected with Scar Lip in the first place, thanks to Busta and Swizz.

What’s the fondest memory you have with Missy Elliott, during the prime of the Hip-Hop Golden Era?

One of my fonder memories is a story about how we met. There were two times that we met. One when I tracked her down in a hotel room, and she’s like “yeah thanks, but no thanks.” The second time was Sylvia Rhone where funny, full circle moment: Scar Lip was signed to Sylvia at Epic. Back then, I managed Busta and Sylvia was the person who turned me onto Missy, when they were signed to her at Elektra Records.

Going out to Lilith Fair, spending the weekend chasing Missy around. To see how far she’s come as an artist in her development and see who she is today, it makes me so proud. Lots of warm stories, but remember her looking at me going “Yeah, I don’t want a manager. Thanks.” [laughs]

Speaking of, how did you end up linking with Scar Lip?

That was actually Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz. They called me, and Swizz said “Yo, I got to talk to you sis. I want to see if you’re interested in this project.” Busta was the one who said, “Look, I’m gonna send you this IG page. I want you to go down the page, then hit me back.” Her first three posts where she talks about her life and her history and who she is just hooked me in. We connected, we met. We’ve been rocking ever since, trying to get this project up and running.

She’s got a killer single right now, “Monster” video. I love that she’s really getting the support of her peers out there on the male and female front. She’s definitely one to watch, we’re excited about her.

You probably get hit up all the time to have to be managed by a bunch of artists. What was it about Scar Lip?

I tell you: seeing that drive, the hustle and the heart that has gone into her passion and her craft. Understanding that she took all of her experiences and her pain and put it to paper in a way that you can’t help but want to see this girl win. When it came to me, going I know I can help her. I know I can at minimum get her set up for success, there was almost no way for me to say no.

Not to mention Swizz and Busta going “we need you sis! You gotta do this.” All have rallied around her. Mary J Blige. Cardi B. She has such a village of really established artists wanting to see her win, and who have really been supportive of her. We’re excited to see where this thing goes with Scar.

What Time Will Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’ Come Out?

For months, Drake has been teasing his new album For All The Dogs. He’s made announcements on his tour, he shared the single “Slime You Out” with SZA after pushing the album back, and today, he released the timestamp freestyle, “8AM In Charlotte.” With all that, anticipation is at a fever pitch for the project. Only one question truly remains:

What Time Will Drake’s ‘For All The Dogs’ Come Out?

Usually, this wouldn’t be a question: Most artists and labels are pretty good about getting their projects to DSPs well before midnight on New Music Friday, allowing them to be promptly launched as the clocks switch over on the east coast.

However, Drake isn’t most artists. In addition to his proclivity for pushing his deadlines to the absolute last second — sometimes literally — he’s one of the few artists on the planet who can get away with dropping new albums and songs without any previous promotion and still be reasonably assured of a massive response from listeners.

Especially with an album like For All The Dogs, which Drake has already pushed back before, there’s always a chance he won’t make it as the clock strikes 12. On the other hand, he’s never actually missed a deadline, even if he gets close, so it’s probably safe to assume that midnight will be the magic hour — or, as he likes to call it, the Scary Hour.

Is Nicki Minaj’s ‘Queen Radio’ Canceled Due To Amp’s End?

On Wednesday, Amazon announced the end of its live streaming audio service Amp. According to Bloomberg, the service was launched in May 2022 as a competitor for chat apps like Clubhouse and Twitter’s Spaces feature (both of which have also since shut down), while CNBC reports the decision was made in the wake of a “sweeping review” of Amazon’s expenses by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Per Business Insider, Amp had failed to meet internal goals for months.

Is Nicki Minaj’s Queen Radio Canceled Due To Amp’s End?

Amp, which operated a bit like its competitors but allowed users to play licensed music and take “callers” while on the air, thus encouraging a “radio show” style format, had hip-hop stars like Big Boi, Joe Budden, Nicki Minaj, and Pusha T as part of its launch and their shows and events were expected to draw plenty of users. However, that is clearly not how it turned out. As an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, “We’ve made the difficult decision to close Amp. We learned a lot about how live music communities interact in the process, which we are bringing to bear as we build new fan experiences at scale in Amazon Music.”

As far as what happens to those shows now that Amp is shuttering, that remains to be seen. Amazon Music currently hosts its own exclusive podcasts, so it’s possible that it’ll fold shows like Queen Radio into its existing lineup and simply stream them from that platform instead. Like Spotify, which also shuttered its own Clubhouse clone earlier this year, Amazon has been increasing its focus on traditional podcasts, so if the Amp shows can be suitably revamped to fit the format, it’s entirely possible that Queen Radio will return in some form before long.

Benny The Butcher Discusses What Big Daddy Kane Cosign Means To Him

A few weeks ago during an interview on Drink Champs, Big Daddy Kane talked about some of his favorite rappers out right now. “J. Cole is my favorite MC of this era. Shoutout to Conway The Machine — I love him to death — Benny The Butcher,” the rap legend said. He’s not alone either as all three artists have received their fair share of critical acclaim. Now Benny himself dropped by the Dope As Usual podcast himself to express how the cosign made him feel.

“I’m still humble. I didn’t even know Kane knew who the f*ck I was, y’feel what I’m sayin? So it’s like, when he was doing his sh*t, he was considered that guy, so it’s like he’s comparing me to those guys — Conway is that guy for sure, J. Cole is definitely that guy, y’know what I’m sayin?,” Benny The Butcher responded. The cosign didn’t just serve as praise for Benny, it also let him know he really is one of the best. “To be compared with those guys — that let me know I’m a top lyricist when it comes from guys who were top lyricists,” he concluded.

Benny The Butcher and J. Cole have actually crossed paths before. The two collaborated on the song “Johnny P’s Caddy” from Benny’s 2022 album Tana Talk 4. Earlier this year the song was certified gold and Benny celebrated by showing off his gold plaque in an Instagram post.

Benny The Butcher was supposed to release his new album back in August. It was delayed past its original release date but Benny has continued teasing particular tracks regardless. One song fans can’t wait to hear is a crossover between Benny and Lil Wayne that’s expected to appear on the album.
