Today In Hip Hop History: Gang Starr’s Third LP ‘Daily Operation’ Turns 30 Years Old!

Nothing beats a classic rap record and a few MCs were dropping them on the regular quite like legendary ’90s rap duo Gang Starr. The group, consisting of Guru holding things down on the mic and DJ Premier handling the head-bumping production, dropped six albums in their career before calling it quits in 2003.

While a reunion album was reportedly planned, unfortunately, Guru passed away on April 19, 2010, before the project could be completed or properly executed overall. While the Hip-Hop community definitely took a blow due to the loss, the work they did create while recording together influenced the genre in ways that we’re still seeing today. One LP that specifically represents Gang Starr’s influential legacy is their third album Daily Operation, which celebrates its 30th anniversary today.

Chrysalis Records

Comprised of jazz-tinged samples and lyrics that illustrated life in the streets of New York City during the early ’90s, Daily Operation saw Gang Starr striding smoothly towards the legendary status that we now place the group in today. The project is East Coast-inspired through and through, from recording the LP entirely at the dearly missed D&D Studios on West 37th Street in Midtown Manhattan all the way to lamenting about Brooklyn on the opening track “The Place We Dwell.” Other standout cuts include “I’m The Man,” featuring the solely credited cameos by Group Home member Lil Dap and Jeru the Damaja, “B.Y.S.” — cleverly abbreviated for “Bust Yo’ Shit” — and the lead single “Ex Girl to Next Girl” that gave us one of the most 90s-looking music videos ever created.

The key to Gang Starr is that, while none of their albums ever crossed Top 5 status on the Billboard 200 — their highest placement happened in 1998 when Moment of Truth hit #6 — sales were never the thing that represented their effect on the game; the music always came first and foremost. Daily Operation received all sorts of critical acclaim nonetheless, and we even included it on our “100 Best Rap Albums” list for The Source’s 100th issue (January 1998). So, while it only reached #65 on the Billboard 200 and faired slightly better on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at #14, those numbers mean nothing when compared to the slick verses, smooth-yet-rugged instrumentals, and thought-provoking bars that still makes this album a certified classic almost three decades after its original release.

Kim Kardashian Reveals Reasons Why Kanye West Walked Out Of Her “SNL” Monologue

Her kiss with Pete Davidson on Saturday Night Live wasn’t the only thing that made Kanye West upset about Kim Kardashian’s appearance on the long-running comedy series. Although Kardashian had already filed for divorce at the time of taping, West was in the audience during his estranged wife’s hosting gig. The Rap mogul would later make complaints about attending the show after Davidson and Kardashian went public with their romance.

It was all revisited on the Hulu series The Kardashians where Kim and sister Khloé chatted about West. Khloé wanted to know how things were progressing with West and the split.

During the taping of Saturday Night Live, Kim said that she had married “the best rapper of all time” while referring to West as “talented” and a “genius.” However, there was a moment that rubbed West the wrong way when she mentioned their divorce.

“He walked out on SNL, like mid-monologue,” Kim said. “He’s upset at the fact that I said, ‘The reason I divorced him.’ [I] used the word ‘divorced’ — he wished I said the word ‘filed for divorce.’ He was upset that I also said he was a rapper. He said, ‘I’m so much more than a rapper. I can’t believe you said ‘rapper.'” Still, West sampled the monologue on Donda.

Kim added that despite West’s antics throughout their marriage, she always stood by him. “I sat there through so many speeches and things that haven’t been the most comfortable for me,” she added. “But that was my partner and I stood by him, I would never embarrass him and walk out.”

“Family Matters” Star Jo Marie Payton Claims Jaleel White Wanted To Fight Her

It has gone down in sitcom history as one of the greatest shows to emerge in the “TGIF” era of television, but everything wasn’t always friendly on the set of Family Matters, says one of its stars. The family-friendly series introduced Steve Urkel to the world, portrayed by actor Jaleel White, and the character would go on to deliver one of his most beloved catchphrases: “Did I do that?

Jo Marie Payton played Harriette Winslow, Urkel’s neighbor who repeatedly put up with his antics, and she recently caught up with Entertainment Tonight for their segment on “Iconic TV Moms.” During the chat, she revisited fun, and not-so-favorable, moments on set. White was just a young teen when he landed the role of Urkel, and Payton believes being thrust into the limelight at such a young age may have influenced how the actor behaved.

“There was one time he actually wanted to physically fight me,” she said of an episode that aired in the show’s 9th season. “[There was a scene where] I said we can’t do that, standards and practices will not let that pass, it’s not gonna happen. He wanted to do it anyway… He was so mad, he started kicking and screaming and stuff.”

“He said something about, ‘She must want to melee.’ I said, ‘What’s a melee?’ He said, ‘A fight.’ I turned around — if he wanna fight, I would.” Darius [McCrary] grabbed me. I was gonna whip his behind.” McCrary played Eddie Winslow, Payton’s character’s son. The actress added that she doesn’t cast all of the blame on White, but on the adults who were supposed to be guiding him at the time.

“I give some of those adults credit too,” she added. “Letting him run wild and do whatever he wanted to do, thinking he can say what he wants to say, you know, and hurt people’s feelings and all that.” With so much time passed, Payton still looks back on her Family Matters days fondly.

“I did love all of my Family Matters crew,” she noted. “I’ve kept in touch with a lot of them, I see them on other shows… I love them all. We had incredible writers, I love them, and they know who my issue was with. It wasn’t with the entirety of them.”

Amber Heard Testifies That Johnny Depp Executed Cavity Search On Her

The trial involving Amber Heard and Johnny Depp rolls on and earlier today (May 4), the actress took to the stand to share her side of the story. The reports coming out of the courtroom have been incendiary as accusations have been hurled by both sides. This is the second week of the trial that was catapulted forward after the Pirates of the Caribbean icon sued his ex-wife for $50 million for defamation. In turn, Heard filed a countersuit to the tune of $100 million.

While on the stand, Heard recounted alleged violent and abusive interactions with Depp. She claimed he was physically, verbally, and sexually abusive.

“I struggle to find the words to describe how painful this is,” she reportedly said on the stand. “This is horrible for me to sit here for weeks and relive everything. Hear people that I knew — some well, some not — my ex-husband with whom I shared a life, speak about our lives in the way that they have. This is the most painful and difficult thing I’ve ever gone through, for sure.”

Heard claimed that after making a comment about one of Depp’s tattoos, he said it read “Wino.” She stated, “I just laughed because I thought he was joking, and he slapped me across the face. And I laughed. I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do. I thought this must be a joke. I didn’t know what was going on. I just stared at him.”

She said that Depp replied, “You think you’re a funny b*tch” before hitting her two more times. Heard also revisited a trip they took to Joshua Tree where Depp allegedly believed that she was hiding cocaine in their upscale trailer. “He was telling me, ‘We’re going to conduct a cavity search shall we?’ Like, just shoved his fingers inside me.”

Depp filed the lawsuit against Heard after she penned a Washington Post op-ed where she detailed alleged abuse at the hands of the famed actor. He claimed that the article damaged his reputation and career, causing him to lose out on filming another installment of Pirates of the Caribbean that could have earned him an estimated $25 million. Depp would later provide evidence that suggested Heard was abusive, and in court, audio was played where the actress admitted to striking Depp.

Martin Lawrence Co-Sign’s Drake’s Clap Back: “On His Def Comedy Jam Game”

It’s unclear if Drake is still following the wife of a troll who cracked a joke about the rapper’s son, but it remains a social media moment that is unmatched. We previously reported on Drizzy commenting on supportive NBA fathers who sit courtside or cheer on their sons. “Imagine your son makes the league and he’s Ja Or Melo or Lonzo all you can do is be elated and competitive and over supportive and it’s a right of passage to that the OG’s talk sh*t,” he wrote under a post about Lavar Ball and Tee Morant.

Drake added a few crying laughing emojis and continued: “I know I’mma be this way even if my son is in a rubix cube competition.” An Instagram user retorted, “Ya son prolly play with ghost writers,” to which Drake replied, “I just followed your girl cause she’s prob miserable and needs some excitement in her life.”

The exchange has been viral all day and celebrities have been adding their two cents to the mix. The man confirmed that his girl did, indeed, receive a follow and DM from the OVO mogul, and Drake’s response received a comedy co-sign from one of the greatest, Martin Lawrence. The Martin and stand-up icon got a good laugh out of Drake’s moment.

“@Drake on his Def Comedy Jam game [sideways crying laughing emoji],” wrote Lawrence. “#Dontstartnonewontbenone.” Of course, Lawrence hosted the famed Def Comedy Jam back in the 1990s and the show featured many of our favorite comedians before they became famous—and some of the most memorable moments came from comedians not taking any guff from the audience.

Sza Says “The Internet Is Demonic,” Deletes TikTok For Mental Health Awareness Month

The trolls have set SZA off and she’s done with the internet—at least for now. We recently shared that while on the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, the TDE hitmaker revealed that her fans would be enjoying a “SZA Summer” now that her album is ready for its release. However, seeing her strut her stuff with the who’s who of Hollywood captured the attention of a few fans who recalled that last month SZA tweeted, “Not going to any more award shows or events til my album out.”

That, of course, wasn’t the case, and after receiving a hard time, SZA unleashed. “I swear to God if I didn’t accidentally fall in love w music .. I would NEVER EVER COME OUTSIDE,” she tweeted.
