A$AP Rocky Premiering Documentary On Sweden Arrest At Tribeca Film Fest

The arrest of A$AP Rocky in Sweden made international headlines as fans and friends called for his freedom. As the story goes, the rapper was being followed by two individuals in the streets of Stockholm, even after Rocky asked them to leave him alone. A physical altercation broke out and Rocky and two members of his entourage were charged with assault.

Rocky’s case will now be the focus of a new documentary titled, Stockholm Syndrome, set to debut at the Tribeca Film Festival as part of the Juneteeth programming. The 105-minute documentary directed by The Architects captures Rocky’s rise to fame and his experience dealing with Sweden’s legal system.

Stockholm Syndrome includes a mix of archival footage, animation, and interviews with appearances from a few prominent figures who advocated for his freedom. A$AP Ferg, Tyler, The Creator, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, and more are confirmed to make cameos in the documentary.

Stockholm Syndrome chronicles the meteoric rise of this contemporary trendsetter, capturing the exuberance of youth and urgency of hip-hop in equal parts, before taking a detour into darkness,” reads a description of the documentary in a press release.

The case made bigger headlines after it was brought to the attention of then-president Donald Trump who, thanks to Kanye West, said he was working to bring Rocky back to America.

Rocky spent a month in a detention center in Sweden before he was released. The rapper was found guilty but was given a suspended sentence and had to pay the victim $1,270 for damages.

Stockholm Syndrome debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 13th at 8 p.m. EST.

Mariah Carey Quotes Jay-Z To Shut Down Rumors That She Split With Roc Nation

Over the weekend, a report from British tabloid The Sun sparked rumors that Mariah Carey had split with Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation management after an “explosive meeting which did not go well at all.” The Sun reported that a source said that Carey is working on a new album and was seeking other management. However, Mariah herself shut down the rumor on Twitter this morning, quoting her longtime business partner Jay-Z and sharing a clip from their 1999 collaboration “Heartbreaker” to remind followers just how deep the roots of their partnership run.

“The only ‘explosive’ situation I’d ever ‘get into’ with Hov is a creative tangent, such as our #1 song ‘Heartbreaker!!’” she wrote. “To the people who make up these lies I say ‘Poof! —Vamoose, sonofa*****”!’” The final quote of her missive comes, of course, from Jay-Z’s 2001 Blueprint single “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” on which Jay addressed naysayers and detractors: “He who does not feel me / Is not real to me, therefore he doesn’t exist / So poof – vamoose, son of a b*tch!”

Clearly, Mariah Carey has similar feelings toward The Sun and its unnamed source. It wasn’t the first time the longstanding pop-R&B icon used her social platforms to clear up misunderstandings. In May, she jokingly teased a Baltimore rapper who sampled her 2005 hit “Shake It Off,” but eventually revealed she had allowed the use of the sample after Questlove got in touch. Meanwhile, Jay-Z is said to be expanding Roc Nation’s already extensive list of services to include television and film production sometime in near future.

Prince Had One Demand Of Alicia Keys Before Letting Her Perform At Paisley Park

Over the weekend was the 20-year anniversary of Songs In A Minor, the breakout debut album from Alicia Keys. She marked the occasion over by joining Ebro Darden on Apple Music Hits to discuss the album. Since the release contains a cover of Prince’s “How Come You Don’t Call Me,” they talked about The Purple One (who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday today, June 7), including the specific demand Prince had of a young Keys before letting her perform at Paisley Park.

Keys told the story:

“He takes me to Paisley Park, and this place is like a dream. And he’s walking me through Paisley Park, [I’m] 18 years old. He has like 900 pianos. ‘This is the piano from Purple Rain. This is the piano when I wrote ‘When Doves Cry.’ This is the room that we sit on the floor with the purple things, and we write songs.’ I could not believe it. Then he says, ‘This is the stage. We want you to perform a little set for my closest people.’ He would invite them to Paisley Park every whatever he did. He had his own universe going. And he was like, ‘One thing: You can’t curse.’ And I was like, ‘Well, he must not know me, because I curse.’”

Keys was there to request Prince’s approval of her cover, which she eventually got. During a Tonight Show appearance from 2017, Keys spoke more about her first phone call with Prince, the first step in getting his blessing for the cover:

Nasaan Connects With SwaVay On “Busy”

Nasaan has been building buzz for a minute now, and the Detroit rapper recently came through with his new single “BUSY.” Enlisting a guest appearance from SwaVay, the new track finds Nasaan taking to a futuristic Sulton banger and flexing a dexterous flow over blistering synthesizers.

Though initial cadential similarities may seem closer to Playboi Carti territory, his flow and clever lyrics shine enough to endear him to the bar lovers. “I don’t call back, got it complex, shot on contact, eight he shift keys, that is all-cap,” he spits. We recently highlighted Nasaan’s talents in our “6 New Artists You Should Hear” feature, where he walked away as the fan-favorite with forty-eight percent of the votes. It will certainly be interesting to see how he continues to evolve, especially if a full-length album is in the works.

Check “BUSY” with SwaVay right now, and sound off if you’ve put Nasaan on your radar.

Mariah Carey Claps Back Over “Explosive” JAY-Z Rumors

There are presently reports that Mariah Carey has left Roc Nation’s management company after having an “explosive” fight with JAY-Z, the founder of the Roc. As she has consistently proven over the years, the legendary pop star will address anything that someone has to say about her, which speaks to her nature as an Aries. She spoke out after seeing the damaging headlines, claiming that she had a falling out with JAY-Z, responding with an instant classic tweet.

Clapping back after reports claimed she had left Roc Nation’s management wing, Mariah Carey wrote, “The only ‘explosive’ situation I’d ever ‘get into’ with Hov is a creative tangent, such as our #1 song ‘Heartbreaker’!! To the people who make up these lies I say ‘Poof! —Vamoose, sonofa*****’!”

While she failed to mention whether she actually left her management group, she’s definitely doing her part in putting the JAY-Z-mentioning rumors to rest. Leave it to Mariah to bring up her #1 success this way too— she’s always quick to remind people of her wins, as she should be.

We’ll keep you posted on any further information regarding the alleged “explosive” meeting between Mariah Carey and JAY-Z. For now, it looks like the rumors were likely dramatized a touch. Do you think Mariah is holding back the details on purpose?

Tory Lanez Reflects On Artists Turning On Him

Tory Lanez recently sat down for a conversation with Gillie Da Kid and Wallo on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast, and it didn’t take long for the conversation to shift to Tory Lanez’ ongoing situation with Megan Thee Stallion, with Gillie specifically curious about the fallout from his peers.

Prefacing that he doesn’t want to shine a light on the case, Gillie asks if Tory felt betrayed by the artists and collaborators he once worked with and respected. “You went through what you went through without any facts being out, without any proof being out,” says Gillie, roughly around the ten-minute mark. “N***as just jumped ship on you, switched sides on you. I know n***as got on all kinds of funny shit.”

“You gotta understand, people have brands,” replies Tory. “Before I look at Tory Lanez like it’s me, Tory Lanez is a brand. Whatever artist is their brand. At the moment, it wasn’t the look to put their brand on it. Unless you were somebody who stood so far into the brand, that your brand was so you, that your personal life is reflected on your brand. When it started there were very few people like that on the outside, but on the inside it was love. That was the weird thing about it for me.”

“When it comes down to artists, I still understand the business side of it, so I never really hold friction there,” he continues. “When things get right, it’ll be alright. Just like now, I’ve been living a regular life. People are coming back and taking pictures, but eight months ago it might not have been the mood.”

Gillie acknowledges Tory’s point, asking if the rapper received any support behind closed doors. “Even the people who came out and said anything about me, a lot of them, after the fact or after the music came out, they called me like ‘I still fuck with you, just at the time, XYZ,” answers Tory. “But there’s nothing wrong with that.”

Gillie disagrees, but Tory maintains that they’re simply from a different world. “There’s something wrong with that in our world,” he states. “People have a wrong idea of how that’s separated, but I understand that those worlds are separated. But not everybody was raised like me…I don’t expect them to be. However, I gotta move how I gotta move.”
