Conor McGregor Claims Kamaru Usman Stole His Moves

Kamaru Usman came through with a massive win on Saturday night as he defeated Jorge Masvidal with a second-round knockout. It was a solid punch that was able to take out Masvidal with ease. In fact, some fans are now giving Usman a whole lot of respect as they never felt like he had that kind of punching power.

One person who wasn’t impressed, however, was Conor McGregor who took to Twitter claiming that Usman has been stealing all of his moves.

“Usman even copying my shots now. Am I to fight this guy at some stage? I think so. Can’t be copying my words and my shots and not get a smack for it. I like 170. It’s mine soon,” McGregor wrote before being told off by Usman.

In true McGregor fashion, he clapped back at Usman, this time asking why he didn’t get an invitation to fight when the Gilbert Burns bout was postponed. That’s when Usman alleged that he did invite McGregor although the Irish fighter never picked up the phone.

“I offered you the fight and you went missing. Let’s stay humble young man. I already took your pride. Don’t make me take your whiskey too,” Usman said.

At this point, it seems like Usman will probably be fighting Colby Covington again before he takes on McGregor. Regardless, these two are setting the stage for a nice potential rivalry.

Polo G’s “RAPSTAR” Defines A New Generation Of Hip-Hop

Since elbowing his way onto the music industry’s radar with his 2019 breakout hit “Pop Out,” Polo G has been speaking his accomplishments, notoriety, and commercial dominance into existence. In 2019, he proclaimed that he would Die A Legend with his impressive debut album, and last year he manifested that he would one day be considered TheGOAT with a sophomore album that peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200. Mere weeks ago, he caught flack for saying that he’s “Pac rebirthed,” but obviously he has engineered his reality once more because he recently channeled Tupac’s commercial dominance, and had his latest single “RAPSTAR” debut atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Released on April 9, “RAPSTAR” arrived alongside a music video that has already garnered over 32 million views in a matter of weeks. The Arrad-directed video for Polo G’s newly minted Billboard chart topper is a cinematic treat, as viewers are transported through a myriad of scenes that find the Chicago rapper navigating the highs and lows of his ever-increasing celebrity. In an exclusive interview with Complex, Arrad said the following about the “Rapstar” video’s inception:

When he played the record, he said he wanted to really bring the lyrics to life. He told me he wanted to highlight some of the things that come with being a superstar. It’s not always about the good. There’s also a lot of dark things that can come with it, too. I wanted to create something that was very linear and brought the lyrics to life, but also highlighted multiple aspects of what it means to be a rap star.

The end result was a music video that featured Polo G giving each of his closest friends a brand new ribbon-wrapped BMW, winning a game of chess while flying private, playing some basketball in a driveway while holding his son in his arms, and baring his soul in the booth. The scenes are timed perfectly to add some visual context to Polo G’s lyrics, but there’s an additional layer beneath the surface of the single’s glossy visuals that further explores how the Chicago rapper truly defines a “rap star.”

Hip-Hop enthusiasts with a watchful eye probably noticed that the “RAPSTAR” video not only tells the story that Arrad mentioned in his interview with Complex, but also pays homage to some of the most notable rap music videos of the past few years, and of all time.

Around the 0:23-mark, the video’s opening gifting spree transitions into a scene from a private jet, in which Polo G dons a turtleneck and a bevy of chains while rapping from a window seat. Later on in the video, the Die A Legend artist takes a podium to accept a trophy that’s adorned with a golden goat and rap directly into the camera as if he was giving a speech. While the visuals are compelling in their own right, eagle-eyed viewers likely recognized that they were reminiscent of DaBaby’s “Going Baby” and Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” videos, respectively.

Other noticeable nods to popular music videos are prevalent throughout the course of the “RAPSTAR,” as Polo G and Arrad fully reimagine scenes from videos such as Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble,” Drake and Lil Durk’s “Laugh Now Cry Later,” and Tupac’s “Hit Em Up.” Near the 0:47-mark, Polo G looks up at a beam of light shining from the top-right corner of the shot, and with the arched doorways in the background, it’s almost an exact recreation of the opening shot of “Humble.” One of the biggest differences between the shots is that Polo G gazes into the light rather than facing away from it, and instead of being draped in a religious garb like Kendrick was in the Dave Meyers-directed visual, the Chicago rapper adds his own flair by rocking a long white bubble coat while he talks to God about his mental health struggles.

Interestingly enough, Polo G’s homage to Drake and Lil Durk’s “Laugh Now Cry Later” video may be the most telling in “RAPSTAR,” as it actually highlights his fellow Chicago rapper and close collaborator, as well as incorporates a look from Tupac’s “Hit Em Up” video. “RAPSTAR” adapts the scene from “Laugh Now Cry Later” in which photos of Lil Durk and Drake flash paparazzi-style before Durk performs his verse in front of a monochrome backdrop. Polo G recreates the scene and retains most of the original’s visual aspects, but the “Martin & Gina” rapper opts to ditch Durk’s grey suit in favor of a dark denim jack and jean combo that mirrors Tupac’s outfit in “Hit Em Up.” To combine imagery from both Pac and Durk in the same moment really speaks to how much of a high regard that Polo G, who describes himself as “Pac rebirthed” in that very scene, holds these two artists.

From the “blink and you miss them” easter eggs to blown-out recreations of iconic Hip-Hop imagery, Polo G’s music video contextualizes his understanding of what a rap star looks like in the music industry today, and it also shines some light on who has potentially inspired the younger generation of artists the most.

Perhaps Polo G’s “RAPSTAR” video marks a paradigm shift, and across the board, new Hip-Hop artists’ may no longer be as inspired by Jay-Z, Kanye West, and even Drake as previous classes of rappers were. For the “Pop Out” rapper to show immense admiration for Kendrick Lamar, Lil Durk, and Tupac is eye-opening. We’ve already discussed at length the All Eyez On Me rapper’s decade-spanning influence, but it’s incredible to consider that Lil Durk has transcended from being a promising upstart in the Chicago drill scene to possibly being to up-and-coming rappers what Kid Cudi was to Travis Scott.

To be clear, Polo G’s “RAPSTAR” video can only be fully interpreted as an indication of who has inspired him throughout his career, but with the introspective record hitting the top of the Billboard Hot 100, his affinity for the artists who he paid homage to in the video may in fact be representative of who rising artists and young Hip-Hop fans alike connect with the most. If so, “RAPSTAR” hasn’t just given Polo G his first number 1 single — it has also informed us that Kendrick Lamar, Tupac Shakur, and Lil Durk are the radiant examples of what the youth demands a rap star to look like today.

Rob $tone Reps His Team With “All Nine Innings”

While not quite ubiquitous to merit an entire subgenre — at least, not yet — we’ve certainly been seeing a notable increase in baseball bars. Big K.R.I.T recently delivered “Pick Up The Pace” in honor of MLB: The Show. StreetLife, Method Man, and Havoc’s “Squad Up” became the New York Yankees anthem for the second year in a row. Now, Rob $tone has held it down with “All Nine Innings,” a track that has earned the honor of becoming the official anthem of the San Diego Padres.

Musically, the song is a perfect victory vibe, driven by Richie Louie’s triumphant horns and some braggadocious bars from the former baseball player. “This song is special and was exciting for me to write because I really had to take myself back to when I played baseball as a kid to get the vibe!” reflects $tone, in an official statement. “Connecting with the San Diego Padres for this anthem is a dream come true for me. I’m just happy the organization and all of the fans love the record!”

Check it out yourself, a must not only for $tone fans, but for anyone who holds an appreciation for America’s pastime.

Shelley FKA DRAM Enables Summer Walker On New Song “All Pride Aside”

Shelley (FKA DRAM) has been teasing the release of his next studio album for weeks, announcing his rebrand and sharing music that’s more in tune with his personal taste. Recently, the multi-platinum “Broccoli” hitmaker has taken a slowed-down approach to his creativity, going back to the basics and showing his fanbase who he truly is. We witnessed glimpses of Shelley’s strengths on songs like “Cooking With Grease” and “Exposure.”

With his album coming soon, Shelley just came through with yet another single release, dropping “All Pride Aside” with his LVRN labelmate Summer Walker.

The new song comes following Shelley’s performance as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series. The duet showcases Shelley’s chemistry with Summer Walker, as well as his artistic command over the soft beat.

Listen to “All Pride Aside” below and let us know what you think. His new album comes out at the end of this week.

Quotable Lyrics:

Girl, if I did this song with you, that means I enable you
I’d be forced to get along with you, ’cause I wanna be enabled too
And if you gave me all your love, that means you enable me
But baby girl, I’m far from done, so now I must return to free

Kanye West & Balenciaga Raise $1M For DMX’s Family With Tribute T-Shirt

Kanye West had a rather surprising role in this weekend’s home-going celebrations for DMX. Ahead of the memorial held at Barclays Center, Yeezy Brand and Balenciaga unveiled a tribute t-shirt that was commissioned by ‘Ye. It was released on Saturday while the memorial service began and quickly racked up nearly $1M in profit, sources close to ‘Ye told TMZ.  At $200 a shirt, the DMX t-shirt sold out in 24 hours and Balenciaga already said that the proceeds from the sales will go towards X’s family.

‘Ye’s involvement in the memorial service was deeper than the tribute t-shirt and Sunday Service Choir’s performance. As Swizz suggested on Saturday, Kanye West and the Yeezy tea designed the stage. Kanye enlisted Akeem Smith to help with the design which included an upside-down pyramid-like set. Images of X were displayed on screens surrounding both above and below the stage during the performances from Sunday Service.

X’s casket was driven to the Barclays Center on a Monster Truck with the Ruff Ryders appropriately riding behind. The funeral procession shut down traffic in New York City. NYPD said that road closures would begin at 12. Along with Kanye’s touch on the memorial service, Nas, Ruff Ryders including The LOX and Swizz Beatz, and X’s children all delivered speeches.

Benny The Butcher Recalls First Time Meeting DMX

It’s clear that the late legend DMX respected the Griselda movement, having officially enlisted the talents of Westside Gunn, Conway The Machine, and Benny The Butcher for his upcoming studio album. Now, that project will be a posthumous release, and hip-hop has been left in a continuous state of mourning ever since X passed away at the beginning of April.

Over the weekend, around the same time X’s casket was being taken on a final ride through his home city of New York, Benny The Butcher took to Instagram to reflect on his first time meeting the Ruff Ryder. You may recall last February, when a clip surfaced in which Benny, X, and Zoey Dollaz were vibing out to unreleased music in a parking lot. Evidently, there’s plenty of interesting backstory where that particular meeting is concerned.

“A couple months ago was my first time meeting X,” reflects The Butcher, sharing a picture of he and DMX from that same day. “He was pullin up but was takin forever and I had some important shit to do and a flight to catch. @therealnoreaga was like u gotta miss tht flight this X so I miss that one and whole other one waitin to meet the Dog my boy @zoeydollaz booked a third one for me and I caught tht it was worth it cuz we kicked it played his album & my shit in the Parkin lot for hours eatin caviar smokin and drinking ace and talkin our shit RIP DMX.”

Though the circumstances surrounding DMX’s new album have changed, many fans are still excited to see the project arrive, if only to spend a little more time with one of the greatest rappers to ever do it. In addition to Benny, Gunn, and Conway, X’s untitled project will feature appearances from Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Bono, Pop Smoke, Usher, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, and more.

Tyrese Shaves His Girlfriend’s Pubic Hair On Instagram

Certain things are just meant to be kept off of social media, and this is very much one of those things. While Tyrese Gibson and his girlfriend Zelie Timothy likely intended to show off their love for one another by sharing this video on social media, the strategy was just too cringe-worthy for the world to ignore how strange it all was.

Over the weekend, Tyrese and his girlfriend Zelie spent some quality time together… and we’re talking QUALITY time. On Zelie’s Instagram story, she posted a video of herself with her legs up in the air as Tyrese grabbed a razor and shaved her pubic hair. “I will never ever let go of my King,” she wrote on the video. “But does your man shave you though?”

During the clip, Tyrese unknowingly sticks his tongue out at parts and Zelie admits she had her mind on something else as she was getting shaved. She also clarified that she generally gets waxed down there but she won’t turn down her man when he wants to take care of the job. “I get sugar waxed guys LOL,” she explained after people started sending her messages about the video. “But I also have a man that loves to shave me. I don’t get any razor bumps. My coochie is okay LOL. Thanks for wondering if it’s ok.”

Drake Links With UK’s Finest For Meeting Of The Bosses

Drake has been on the move this past weekend, having absolutely stacked his itinerary with notable link-ups. Between checking out a Coi Leray concert and bestowing his esteemed co-sign upon the young “Big Prrrd” artist, as well as joining forces with Dreamville lyricist J.I.D, it’s looking like the 6ix God has been campaigning ahead of his big Certified Lover Boy release.

In addition to the aforementioned, Drake also took a moment to hold it down for a veritable meeting of the bosses, connecting with some of the U.K’s finest for a luxurious dinner. “You know that’s the hideaway,” captions Drizzy, citing his “Slide” lyric “Find me somewhere out in London, you know that’s the hideaway.” And while he did tag the photo in Beverly Hills, London is certainly present and accounted for, represented by Giggs, Dave Santan, Not3s, and actor Damson Idris.

That’s not to imply that there will be a heavy U.K. presence on Drake’s upcoming Certified Lover Boy, but it certainly indicates that he has remained on solid terms with his friends and collaborators overseas. Fans surely remember several of Giggs’ standout performances on More Life, a project that drew heavy inspiration from the British rap scene. He also previously connected with Dave Santan on “Wanna Know,” a track that played a major role in bringing North American eyes to the talented young lyricist’s work.

Shelley Debuts A New Song In His Return To NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts

In his return to Tiny Desk Concerts, the newly rechristened and slimmed-down Shelley invites viewers into a softly-lit study for a simmering performance of songs from his upcoming album, Shelley FKA DRAM. Thanks to Tiny Desk’s “(At-Home)” designation, the Virginia native gets extra comfy, donning a set of food-patterned PJs that works just as well as an eye-popping suit, packing his band into the smaller confines, and delivering soulful renditions of songs like “Exposure,” “The Lay Down,” “Cooking With Grease,” and the debut of “Rich & Famous.”

The last time Shelley played Tiny Desk — way back in 2017 — he was promoting the lighthearted, melodic hip-hop debut album Big Baby DRAM. He makes note of the change during his return performance, reintroducing himself as Shelley — his government name — and calls the moment “a new beginning. Full circle.”

Shelley first showed glimpses of the shift in 2018 with his That’s A Girl’s Name EP, shifting to groovy but still swaggering R&B. Then, in 2019, he shared “The Lay Down” with HER (who’s now an Oscar and Grammy winner), presaging the new, grown-and-sexy direction he’s adopted for his next project, which releases April 29 in honor of his mom’s birthday.
