Derek Chauvin Pleads The Fifth, Says He Will Not Testify In George Floyd Trial

Derek Chauvin decided not to testify, as is his protected right under the Fifth Amendment, in the final phase of the trial resulting from George Floyd’s death. The defense rested its case on Thursday, and closing arguments are set to be given Monday, after which the jury will deliberate privately.

According to Chauvin, he made the decision not to testify completely on his own, which he announced in court before the jury was present. After questioning from his attorney Eric Nelson, it suggested there was some sort of debate regarding the issue.

Nelson asked, “I have advised you, and (to say that) we have gone back and forth on the matter would be kind of an understatement, wouldn’t it?” Chauvin responded, “Yes it is,” agreeing with Nelson’s claim.

Because Chauvin chose to invoke his Fifth Amendment right, prosecutors will not be able to cross-examine him

The prosecution called 38 witnesses over the course of 11 days, and rested its case on Tuesday morning. Their main goal was to prove that Chauvin used excessive and unreasonable force when kneeling on Floyd’s back and neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds last May. The team relied on video’s of Chauvin’s actions, experts in law enforcement criticizing Chauvin’s actions, and testimony from medical officials confirming Floyd died due to the excessive restraint.

The former police officer has pleaded not guilty to second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges.

Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Signs R&B Singer Maeta

A new report from Variety announces that Jay-Z has officially added some new talent to the Roc Nation roster, signing rising r&b singer Maeta to his label. Roc Nation Co-President Omar Grant praised her talents in a press release announcing the deal.

“Maeta has one of those rare natural voices that will stop you in your tracks,” states Grant. “When I heard her sing live for the first time, she already had the poise, presence, and instincts of a much more established artist. I’m so glad she is beginning her career at Roc Nation.”

The report also features a few words from Maeta, who was unsurprisingly thrilled to join the esteemed label. “I can’t believe I’m officially part of the Roc Nation family!” she writes. “I am so thankful to Omar, Shari, and the rest of the team for embracing me and believing in my dream.” She also addressed the deal in a recent Instagram post, captioning “your girl is signed!!! thank you @rocnation for welcoming me.”

It would appear that Maeta will be hitting the ground running on her new label, with a new EP called Habits already in the cards for an April 30th release. The singer has already shared a taste of what’s to come, having recently dropped off her single “Toxic” with BEAM, produced by Skrillex — look for that one to line the Habits tracklist when it drops in a few weeks time.

LISTEN: Maeta – Toxic ft BEAM

Maeta is managed by Jeff Robinson (the manager of H.E.R.) and Jason Hobdy of MBK Entertainment; she has collaborated with artists like Buddy and Kaytranada. We’d like to Congratulate Maeta on her new Roc Nation deal, and we look forward to seeing what this new development has in store for the Indianapolis singer.

Michael Jordan To Induct Kobe Bryant Into Hall Of Fame

Kobe Bryant will be heading to the Hall Of Fame this year after perhaps one of the greatest NBA careers of all time. With five NBA titles and numerous records to his name, there is no denying that Kobe belongs in the Hall. Unfortunately, Kobe won’t be here to see himself get inducted, but we’re sure the honor will be massive for his family, who are expected to be in attendance. The ceremony is going down on May 15th, and today, it was revealed who would have the honor of inducting Kobe into the Hall.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Michael Jordan will be the one to present Kobe into one of basketball’s greatest institutions. Jordan was a huge influence on Kobe and during Bryant’s funeral, Jordan gave a moving speech that had many tearing up. With this in mind, MJ is the perfect person to be bestowing this honor onto Kobe.

Kobe will also be inducted alongside incredible names like Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan, who were all huge giants of that era. Kobe had his run-ins with those players, and it only makes sense that they would go into the Hall of Fame together.

Needless to say, we will be watching come May 15th.

Irv Gotti Reflects On DMX, Ja Rule, & Jay-Z’s Fearsome Battling Skills

To this day, the fabled supergroup consisting of Jay-Z, Ja Rule, and DMX, remains one of hip-hop’s oft-pondered what-ifs. Originally imagined by Murder Inc leader Irv Gotti, circumstances ultimately fell through as it proved immensely difficult to gather all three emcees in a singular space.

Ja Rule recently reflected on the difficulties of uniting Jay-Z and DMX — “Jay and X, you couldn’t get them in the same room together,” he told HipHopDX — though they did ultimately manage to deliver the standout posse cut “It’s Murda” and Streets Is Watching highlight “Murdergram.” Alas, that was the extent of their collaborative history, though many have since wondered how the game might have changed under different circumstances.

LISTEN: Jay-Z, Ja Rule, & DMX – Murdergram

In a recent interview with Audacy, Irv Gotti actually opened up about the failed supergroup, providing further insight behind his motivation to unite the three New York lyricists. “When you talk about X, Jay, and Ja,” begins Irv. “The same feeling I had with X, I had with Jay when I heard him rhyme. It’s the same feeling I had with Ja when I heard him rhyme. These three guys that are all my brothers, imagine selfishly how I felt. I was like ‘yo, I got the best three dudes in the world yo!’ And this was before any of them got on.”

“The revolution that happened, the takeover with all three of them reaching the pinnacle, I knew it was going to happen,” he continues. “Cause they all get busy, and get busy at a high level. I watched all three of these guys battle other people. They would shut people up, dudes who rhyme wouldn’t rhyme around them. They was that nasty, it was a different level with all three of them.”

“So we was in the studio, I wanted that Murder Inc album so badly,” he admits. “I didn’t even care about the money. I loved Hip Hop so much, I knew if those three dudes go in the studio and make an album, it’s gonna be the illest Hip Hop album ever. Why? They’re all gonna battle each other really. Any record that you’ve ever heard with them on it together, they tryna outshine each other.”

“The first one was ‘Murdergram,’ and Jay set that off,” continues Gotti. “He only spit sixteen bars. But Rule and X spit twenty-four, thirty. They were going at it! When we did ‘It’s Murda,’ did you hear Jay’s verse?! That’s because of ‘Murdergram!’ These dudes ain’t playing!” He laughs as he remembers how all three used to drag him into the conversation, eagerly looking to be crowned the best by their longtime production collaborator.

Vince Staples Announces 2 New Albums & A Netflix Show

Vince Staples is one of the most talented and outspoken rappers out right now. In addition to being one of the West Coast rappers who has built an amazing career without a Dr. Dre co-sign, the Long Beach artist has dropped critically acclaimed albums back-to-back, with his last full-length FM! arriving near the end of 2018. In 2019, Vince also got into his acting bag with the incredible, and sadly short-lived, Atlanta-esque Youtube series The Vince Staples Show. But as of late, Hip-Hop fans haven’t heard much from Vince Staples, gotten any new episodes of The Vince StaplesShow, or received any new music from him since his 2019 single “Hell Bound (Ad 01).”

Well, now fans of the Long Beach rapper can get excited once again because Vince Staples is back. In a recent Q&A for GQ, Vince opened up about his personal life and career challenges in an interview with Desus & Mero‘s Desus Nice, and at the beginning of the piece, it is revealed that the FM! artist has several projects on the way.

During the intro to Vince Staple’s interview, it is announced that the Big Fish Theory artist will be releasing two albums and a Netflix show in the near future. The first album is revealed to be a self-titled effort that will drop later this summer, and although there is no hint at when the second album will be dropping, its title will be Ramona Park Broke My Heart. Lastly, the GQ article also revealed that a “Netflix show bearing his name” will be released in the near future, leaving one to speculate that The Vince Staples may be making a return afterall.

Which project are you looking forward to the most: the self-titled album dropping this summer, Ramona Park Broke My Heart, or his forthcoming Netflix show?

Russ Navigates A Bad Breakup In His Melancholy ‘Bankrupt’ Video

In the melancholy video for his new single “Bankrupt,” it looks like Russ could use some relationship counseling — or at least, learn some new coping methods. The video opens with the New Jersey rapper dipping out on a bad date, leaving his girl hanging at a diner. Then, he drives to a nearby motel and proceeds to mope a bit before using the payphone outside to call his ex — a conversation that looks unproductive, at best. Finally, he sets fire to his car, presumably to keep himself from backsliding, although it looks like he’s now stranded in the desert instead.

All jokes aside, it appears that the outspoken advocate for artistic independence has found his groove in recent months, dropping a string of artistic videos ranging from the celebratory “Ugly” to the moody “Misunderstood” and “Hard For Me.” He also recently launched his own strain of cannabis products named for his well-received 2020 EP Chomp. Despite his apparent relationship issues — three breakup videos in a row implies some emotional baggage, for sure — his career has turned out to be “pandemic proof” and his esteem among fans has grown ever since he gained some distance from past social media faux pas. Judging from his revenue from streaming, merch, and other business ventures, he’s far from going bankrupt for the time being.

Chris Brown Flies In “Go Crazy (Remix)” Video With Lil Durk, Mulatto, & Future

Chris Brown has some of the best music videos in the game. He manages to up the score every time he released a new visual and he successfully did it again with the video for “Go Crazy (Remix)” featuring Future, Lil Durk, and Mulatto.

The remix was released following the tremendous yearlong surge of the original record, which was a collaboration with Young Thug from their Slime & B album. The track quickly became one of Breezy’s most long-lasting successes, impacting the charts for many months. Giving the song its final push, CB has released the official music video for the remix, which sees the superstar artist taking flight from an airplane. Skydiving with the model seated next to him, Chris passed the baton to Lil Durk, who appears during a meeting with his therapist. The rapper eventually realizes that the trained professional is actually a robot when the scene cuts to Mulatto, who’s moving in a bubble room with two dancers. The three women crawl all over the walls before Future is introduced, hanging from a cliff with one arm. Young Thug also makes a short cameo in the video.

Watch the creative new music video for “Go Crazy (Remix)” above and let us know who has your favorite scene. Was it Chris Brown, Mulatto, Future, or Lil Durk?

Who Is Foogiano? Everything To Know

Foogiano has been slowly making his name ring bells across the internet, burrowing his hole within the hip-hop genre. At the same time, he’s still seemingly learning how to leave his street life behind him. Apart from his records giving his name viral status, many of the first times we heard about Foogiano was by way of an arrest, or run-in with the law. Nonetheless, even with his rap career thoroughly entangled in his legal problems– he’s currently locked up for attempting to evade authorities when he took off his ankle monitor– he seems to be destined for success. With his streaming numbers and his clout climbing, which recently led to an online spat with Trey Songz, we decided to break down everything to know about him.

Early Life

Kwame Khalil Brown, best known as Foogiano, was born on July 4th, 1993. He grew up in Greensboro, Georgia, a small town with a population of under 4,000 people. Brown lived in a house with his mother, five brothers, and four sisters. “I jumped in the streets and they didn’t,” Brown said when pointing out the difference between himself and his siblings. Running the streets came to a halt, though, when Foogiano was first arrested at the age of 14, on charges of robbery. He spent a little over a year in a juvenile detention center.

At the age of 15 he was released, and he moved in with his grandmother shortly after, which is when (and where) he started writing his first poems. In between playing basketball and getting in trouble, he used poetry as a way to process what he was going through. At the same time, his older brother urged him to turn his poems into raps, clearly impressed with the skill of his penmanship.

When Foogiano wound up in prison for three years on burglary and robbery charges at the age of 20, instead of feeling defeated and giving up, Foogiano decided to sharpen his mind while he was behind bars. Not only did he spend countless hours rapping and writing, but he also read everything he could get his hands-on. His favorite books to read were The Cartel series by Ashley JaQuavis.

Jumping Into Rap

When Foogiano was released after serving those three years, his family and friends all pushed him to focus on music. With their support, as well as using them directly for motivation, not to mention all the effort he put in refining his craft while he was locked up– Foogiano began turning his poems into rhymes.

After dropping a few mixtapes Foogiano decided to blindly enter the Authentic Empire Music Group Rap Competition with a possible $10,000 prize and a record deal for the winner. Foogiano ultimately won the grand prize, and quickly signed with Atlantic Records. As the story goes, the same day he inked the deal with Atlantic, Foogiano was simultaneously approached by Gucci Mane to be a part of his newly-relaunched 1017 label. Foogiano accepted Gucci’s offer as the first artist to be signed to 1017, which did not pose an issue to Atlantic considering 1017 is distributed by the major label.

“Gutta Baby” & Viral Success

In April 2020, Foogiano released “Molly” and “Trapper” which were his first singles under Gucci Mane’s 1017 imprint. Both singles were on the top 50 of the Apple Music charts for the first two weeks after being released, and both music videos went viral on YouTube. Foogiano rode the wave of online success and dropped his album Gutta Baby in November of 2020. The album included his trademark hard-hitting records, including the “Molly” remix featuring DaBaby, “Trapper” remix featuring Lil Baby, “Yano,” and “Menace” featuring his 1017 label mate Pooh Sheisty.

In the first week Gutta Baby shot up to the top 20 on the Apple Music Charts. Foogiano has also had major success with his contributing bars to the New 1017 compilations Gucci Mane Presents: So Icy Summer and So Icy Gang, Vol. 1. His last release is a song that advocates for his release, “Free Foo,” released at the beginning of April.

Recent Arrest & Probation Violation

The first time Foogiano got into trouble with the law was when he was only 14 years old, and this of course, resulted in a stint at a juvenile detention center. Foogiano went back to prison again at the age of 20 for home invasion and robbery, and this time he served a little over three years, and was released in 2017, directly preceding the rise in his rap career.

Recently, however, Foogiano has found himself back in trouble with the law, and behind bars once again. The rapper was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Barrow County, GA in December, 2020. The arrest was a violation of his probation stemming from the prior burglary conviction. Therefore, Foogiano was given an ankle monitor and ordered to stay in his home state of Georgia. Weeks later the authorities found the ankle bracelet on the side of a highway in Barrow County, GA– it appeared to be burned off. After months of being on the run from the authorities, Foogiano was eventually found and taken into custody in Memphis, Tennessee in March, 2021. He is currently in custody in Greene County, Georgia and has yet to be sentenced.

Renni Rucci Relationship

Foogiano and Renni Rucci have maintained a low-key relationship for awhile, but the two were recently thrust into the spotlight due to unsuspecting drama with Trey Songz (more on that below). Renni recently spoke with us on connecting with Foogiano via DM, revealing that she was the one who sent out the first DM, asking to hop on the “Molly” remix– little did she know, Foogiano had already recorded one with DaBaby. After a lapse in communication, the two picked back up with flirtatious vibes when Foogiano apparently would not stop commenting under Renni’s photos. Once the rapper made it publicly known that he was interested in the South Carolina native, the two finally connected with each other directly over the phone, and their relationship quickly evolved from online to IRL.

Trey Songz Beef

The jailed rapper had some unfriendly words for Trey Songz after the singer posted a photo of Foogiano’s girlfriend, Renni Rucci, on his Instagram Story the other week. The post, which occurred without clear motivation, led many to believe that Trey was simply attempting to shoot his shot with Renni. Foogiano caught wind of the “Mr. Steal Your Girl” singer’s post and, inevitably, wasn’t too fond of it. While the jailed rapper currently does not have direct access to social media, his team managed to shar a message on his behalf. Through his Instagram Story, Foogiano was able to deliver a public threat to Trey Songz, including telling him that he’s going to “slap the f*ck outta” him.

“Slap the sh*t out you when I get out @treysongz. From The Mayor,” Foogiano warned Trey. Then, in a follow-up to the text message, there was a video that was posted by Foogiano’s team: “Trey, you a b*tch. I’m gonna slap the f*ck outta you when I catch you, boy,” Foogiano said through a jail phone. “You better have a lot of security with you … I’ll slap the f*ck out them, too, with yo old a**. Sangin a** n***a, you ain’t gonna sing when I catch your b*tch a**, boy.”

Ultimately, the beef pretty much petered out right there, as Trey Songz did not exactly reply, although some speculated that a few laughing emojis and a “picture that” response shared shortly after Foogiano’s post could be construed as such.

Are you a fan of Foogiano? Let us know in the comments.
