French Montana, the acclaimed musician and philanthropist, has donated 500 canoes to the impoverished community of Makoko in Yaba, Lagos Mainland. Makoko recently served as the backdrop for Montana’s latest music video, “Wish U Well,” released last Friday. Montana’s generous gesture not only aids the community but also stimulates the local economy by involving local craftsmen in the production of the canoes.
This act of kindness continues Montana’s mission to give back to communities in need, rooted in his genuine connection with the people and culture of the regions he visits. Six years ago, during filming “Unforgettable” in Uganda with Swae Lee, Montana initiated the Suubi Health Center project, improving maternal healthcare for underserved mothers and children across 55 remote villages.
The “Wish U Well” video captures the vibrant culture and resilience of Makoko, reflecting Montana’s deep appreciation for the community. Yet, it also marks the launch of a groundbreaking philanthropic effort. Montana, along with Swae Lee, gamma., and SALXCO, plans to donate 500 wooden canoe boats to Makoko’s 200,000 residents, who face recurring flooding threats.
Makoko has grappled with pollution, sewage issues, and insufficient sanitation systems. This initiative aims to revitalize the community and enhance its resilience to climate change impacts. The plan involves a large financial contribution to fund the production of the 500 boats, with an estimated delivery by December, just in time for Christmas. French Montana’s dedication to driving positive change continues to make a meaningful impact on communities worldwide.
“I witnessed firsthand how water is both a lifeline and an obstacle in Makoko. These boats are essential tools transporting the residents of Makoko and goods and services,” said Montana. “As an immigrant from Morocco, giving back to communities in Africa, the place that raised me is so important. When I was filming, I met local leaders who talked about the daily struggles and aspirations of the wider community. I was moved by their spirit and positivity, which inspired me to get involved and to help impact change.”
