Though he has not released an album in some time, Ferg has kept busy with singles and features. The former A$AP Mob member is seemingly on a mission to prove that he can still be a viable artist on his own, and “Thought I Was Dead” is a direct response to his detractors. The track, co-produced by Lex Luger, Mike WiLL Made-It, and a handful of other names, is a banger. It sounds like something straight out of the mid-2010s, with a big bass and energetic 808s. Ferg flows over the production with a similar energy.
Ferg is lyrically on point as well, delivering brash and boastful lines in a way that fans have come to expect from Harlem rappers. He takes aim at his haters, talks about losing friends, and even takes a moment to call on Sony to begin renegotiating his record deal. The second verse is completely flex-laden, with the bulk of his criticism going to “broke” people before talking about his grind to get to where he is today. Ferg’s last single, the Future-assisted “Allure,” briefly made headlines after fans theorized that Future was taking some subtle digs at Gunna. “Thought I Was Dead” has no such controversial lines, but it is still worth your time. No album has been announced yet, but based on Ferg’s increased output, it is probably not too far away. Stream the new single below.
