SOURCE SPORTS: Jets Trade Zach Wilson to Broncos

The Denver Broncos have added a quarterback just days before the NFL Draft. Zach Wilson is being traded from the New York Jets to the Broncos, ending a stint in The Big Apple where he was drafted No. 2 overall in 2021.

In exchange, the Broncos will send their 2024 sixth-round selection at No. 203. Coming over with Wilson will be a seventh-round pick, No. 256. The Broncos and Jets will split Wilson’s $5.5 million salary.

The Jets will enter this season with Tyrod Taylor backing up Aaron Rodgers. Wilson will join Jarret Stidham in the quarterback room in Denver. The team is also expected to draft a quarterback this weekend.

Zach Wilson Traded By The Jets To The Denver Broncos Days Before NFL Draft

The Jets have decided to cut ties with Zach Wilson. Wilson was the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The Jets selected him because they believed he would become their franchise quarterback. Now, he is being shipped to the Denver Broncos days before the 2024 NFL Draft. The deal includes late-round draft picks and swaps for the teams. The move might allow a fresh start for Wilson, who will be looking to turn his career around in Denver.

Wilson shot up draft boards during his senior season at BYU. The hype around him made him the number two overall pick in his draft class. Wilson went into a situation that needed him to be great, and for whatever reason, he never really caught on in the league. He has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in his career, putting up some of the worst statistics of any quarterback in the league. Wilson was probably hoping to get out of New York and from under Aaron Rogers.

The Zach Wilson Era In New York Is Over

Zach Wilson was traded to the Broncos for a late-round pick swap. Last season, the Jets traded for Aaron Rogers in an attempt to upgrade their quarterback position and go for the playoffs. Unfortunately, rogers tore his Achilles tendon in the first game of the season. Wilson was thrown back onto the field, and the results were less than ideal. Wilson played better than ever, but better than ever for Wilson is still pretty subpar. It is a shame because the Jet’s defense continued to be one of the best units in the league. Both parties are probably happy to move on from one another.

Aaron Rogers is set to make his return to the football field for the Jets. Last season, after being injured, Aaron Rogers kept teasing fans with an early return that never materialized. Since then, Rogers has been talking about new conspiracy theories every other week. He teased a campaign for United States Vice President, which the Jets and NFL weren’t fond of. Aaron Rogers is talented, and it’s telling that the Jets would rather deal with his off-the-field peculiarities than Wilson.

Jets Grant Zach Wilson Permission To Seek Trade

The Zach Wilson era appears to be over in New York. The Jets have granted the embattled QB permission to seek a trade. It’s a move that has been expected since the team owner said that the team “didn’t have a backup quarterback” last season. The team will work closely with Wilson’s agent to try and move the former second-overall pick. It is widely expected that Wilson, who has never settled in the NFL, will garner a late-round pick at most.

However, the Jets are eager to find a quality backup for Aaron Rodgers. “We’re still really early in the offseason, especially when it comes to the veteran backup landscape and market. We’ve had good meetings and good evaluations with the guys that are available, and I think we’re ready to take the next step and see where the market is exactly with these backup quarterbacks,” GM Joe Douglas said this week.

Aaron Rodgers Blasts Jets For “Chicken Sh*t” Locker Room Leaks

All this comes at the end of a tense year for the Jets. In December, Aaron Rodgers publicly criticized the New York Jets for a number of locker room leaks that appeared to villainize benched quarterback Zach Wilson. “That’s a problem with the organization. We need to get to the bottom of whatever this is coming from and put a stop to it privately, because there’s no place in a winning culture where — and this isn’t the only time. There’s been a bunch of other leaks,” Rodgers told The Pat McAfee Show.

The leaks in question stemmed from an article published by The Athletic. Anonymous locker room sources had told the outlet that Wilson appeared “reluctant” to resume QB1 duties with the Jets all but eliminated from playoff contention. These sources speculated that, much like a college player sitting out a bowl game, Wilson is wary of getting injured before he likely joins a new team next season. Rodgers questioned why someone within the Jets organization would want to “assassinate someone’s character like that report does for Zach”. Furthermore, Rodgers called the rumors “chicken sh-t at its core”.

Zach Wilson Named Jets Starter Despite Locker Room Leaks

The Jets have named Zach Wilson their starter for this weekend’s game against Houston. “Zach gives us the best chance to win,” head coach Robert Salah told reporters on Wednesday. However, the choice to reinstate Wilson as starter comes amidst speculation about the young QB’s mindset. A recent report by The Athletic revealed that Wilson was reportedly “reluctant” to play late-season games if the Jets weren’t still in the playoff hunt. While the 4-8 Jets can mathematically qualify, their window is quickly closing. They have lost their last five games and have been consistently unable to find the endzone in that stretch.

In naming Wilson starter, as opposed to Trevor Siemian or Brett Rypien, Salah avoided having the Jets become the first Jets team since 1989 to start four quarterbacks. However, given how dire the situation is for the Jets, Wilson will likely be given a short lease. The Texans are surging, having won four of their last five games. Sunday is an absolute must-win game for New York.

Aaron Rodgers Still Considering Return For Jets

Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers is still optimistic that he can return this season. The veteran QB recently argued that he could return earlier than Christmas Eve if his recovery continues to go well. “Anything is possible. It feels great to be on the practice field, but I’m not anywhere near ready to play,” Rodgers told reporters last week. The veteran QB was cleared for limited practice last Wednesday, giving the Jets 21 days to activate him from injured reserve. This week could see Rodgers practicing on back-to-back days if he feels capable of doing so.

However, Rodgers reiterated that his return depends on whether the Jets can still make the playoffs. “I don’t think that would make a ton of sense. A comeback this year before the four-month mark would mean I’m not 100 percent healthy, so it’d be a risk for myself. For the team to sign off on if we’re out of it, I’d be surprised if they would OK that to come back,” Rodgers noted. Per ESPN, the 4-8 Jets have a less than 1% chance to make the playoffs.

Jets Eye Another QB Change With Elimination Looming

The Athletic report stemmed from the fact that the Jets cut Tim Boyle, their starter of the past two games, this week. Signing Brett Rypien from the Seahawks practice squad, the team could be in line to start their fourth quarterback of the season this weekend. Wilson, benched two weeks ago, is back in consideration for another start. However, the team also has veteran options with Rypien and the previous week’s QB2, Trevor Siemian.

At 4-8, the Jets have now lost their last five games, completely squandering their surprising 4-3 start to the season. While they cannot be completely eliminated from playoff contention this week, falling to 4-9 would all but end their season. Furthermore, they must overcome a surging Houston Texans team that has won four of their last five games. After starting 2-3, the Texans are now jostling for position in the playoff race. Jets head coach Robert Salah is expected to announce the team’s starting QB later today.

Zach Wilson Responds To Jets Fans

Zach Wilson and the New York Jets have not been the match made in heaven they were hoping for. The 2021 second-overall pick has been abysmal as of late. Overall, he could be in for a rude awakening in the offseason as the Jets could easily go and get someone better.

Last night, the Jets played the Jacksonville Jaguars and they were hoping to get above .500. Instead, the Jaguars beat them by a score of 19-3. Wilson ended up getting pulled as he went 9-18, 92 yards, and one interception. Needless to say, Wilson was just awful.

Zach Wilson Reacts

With Wilson playing awful football, the Jets fanbase let him have it. There were numerous occasions in which you could hear the fans booing him. This is certainly bad news for any quarterback. However, Wilson told the media that he completely understands their frustration.

“We don’t blame them. We have a very passionate fanbase and they’re here to watch us score touchdowns and we’re not scoring touchdowns,” Wilson said. “We’re not getting first downs, we’re not moving the ball. We obviously can’t throw the ball. So, of course they’re going to be frustrated.”

Head coach Robert Saleh believes Wilson can still have a career in New York. Although it’s nice to say that for Wilson’s confidence, he appears to be another QB draft bust that just can’t play at the highest level.
