Lil Peep’s Wrongful Death Lawsuit Reaches Settlement

Lil Peep‘s mother, Liza Womack, and the late rapper’s former label, First Access Entertainment, have reached a settlement regarding the multi-year legal battle surrounding his passing. Womack’s lawyer, Paul A. Matiasic, confirmed to Pitchfork that the terms of the settlement are confidential. Peep died at the age of 21 years old in 2017 as a result of an accidental overdose of fentanyl and Xanax. He also tested positive for cannabis, cocaine, and the painkiller Tramadol. He was found on a tour bus while wrapping up his Come Over When You’re Sober Tour.

“Today, Gus’s music came home. From this day forward, his music will be in the care of his mother and brother, and no one else. It is a solemn moment for us as we reflect on the struggles of the past five-plus years. We are grateful to all of the fans, friends, professionals, and family who stood by us,” Womack announced on Instagram, with a photo of Peep. She continued: “We were all permanently changed by Gus’s death. We know he should be here in the world with all of us, creating — making whatever he was inspired to make. But he is not.” Womack concluded: “We will protect his music with all of our strength.”

Womack’s Post

Womack filed the lawsuit in October 2019. She alleged wrongful death, negligence, and breach of contract against First Access Entertainment, manager Bryant Ortega, and tour manager Belinda Mercer. Womack’s lawyers argued that the state of the tour was “dysfunctional” and “ultimately lethal.” If the two parties didn’t reach a settlement, a trial would have begun on March 8.

Peep released just one studio album during his lifetime, Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1. His estate released the sequel, Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 2, posthumously. Womack has also been re-releasing some of Peep’s independently released material, including his mixtapes Live ForeverCrybaby, and Hellboy. She says that she intends to release more of Peep’s music following the recent settlement. Peep’s music is often credited for helping popularize the mid to late 2010s emo rap scene, for which he blended rap and rock music.

Kyle Rittenhouse Solicits Donations For Legal Fees After Judge OKs Wrongful Death Lawsuit

Kyle Rittenhouse dodged convictions after fatally shooting two men and injuring another during civil unrest in Kenosha, WI in 2020. Rittenhouse quickly became a controversial figure as many condemned his actions while others, typically on the far-right, championed him. Though he roams freely, even appearing on podcasts to discuss the incident, he still faces a wrongful death lawsuit.

A judge gave the green light for a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Rittenhouse to move forward. John Huber, the father of one of the victims, Anthony Huber, accused the officers of violating his son’s constitutional rights. Huber said they allowed a dangerous situation that ultimately led Rittenhouse to shoot Anthony to death. Additionally, he claimed that Rittenhouse and law enforcement conspired to harm protesters.

KENOSHA, WISCONSIN – NOVEMBER 10: Kyle Rittenhouse starts to get emotional a second time as he is on the witness stand during his traill at the Kenosha County Courthouse on November 10, 2021 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse is accused of shooting three demonstrators, killing two of them, during a night of unrest that erupted in Kenosha after a police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back while being arrested in August 2020. Rittenhouse, from Antioch, Illinois, was 17 at the time of the shooting and armed with an assault rifle. He faces counts of felony homicide and felony attempted homicide. Rittenhouse later filed a motion to dismiss the civil rights lawsuits but his efforts fell short of successful. He claimed that Huber served the lawsuit at his sister’s home, rather than his own. Still, the judge said Rittenhouse “is almost certainly evading service.” This was based on Huber’s claim that he spent 100 hours trying to locate his house, going through seven states before finding Rittenhouse’s Florida home.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman ruled that the case should move forward since Huber’s death “could plausibly be regarded as having been proximately caused by the actions of the governmental defendants.” “Rittenhouse has been deliberately cagey about his whereabouts,” Adelman wrote. “Although he denies living in Florida, he does not identify the place that he deems to be his residence.”

“We still have a long fight ahead of us this ruling was disappointing but expected,” Rittenhouse wrote after the judge dismissed his motion. “I respect the judges decision. but hope that as this lawsuit against me continues that truth will be brought to light. I am hopeful and thankful for all of your continuous support as I face this.” He later shared a link to a GiveShareGo page where he’s collecting donations for his legal fees.

Aqib Talib Sued Over Fatal Shooting At Football Game

Back in August, a tragic shooting took place at a youth football game coached by former NFL star Aqib Talib. According to TMZ, Talib was coaching against a man named Michael Hickmon. Things were getting testy, and subsequently, a player on Hickmon’s team scored after Talib’s squad got hit with a taunting call.

Consequently, Talib was upset and ended the game prematurely. When Hickmon went to get the game ball, he was allegedly punched by Talib. From there, Talib’s brother Yaqub reportedly got involved and shot five times. Hickmon was hit multiple times and eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Aqib Talib Lawsuit

Following the shooting, Yaqub Talib was hit with a murder charge. According to TMZ, Aqib Talib is now being sued for wrongful death. For now, it remains unknown what kind of monetary damage the family is looking for. However, it is clear that they are devastated by such a senseless death.

Previously, Talib had issued a statement on the matter through his attorney. “Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life,” the attorney said. “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”

Overall, this is an incredibly unfortunate situation. No one should be losing their life over a football game. Not to mention, there are plenty of kids who witnessed this game who will be scarred from what they saw. Hopefully, Hickmon’s family is able to find peace.
