SOURCE SPORTS: Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Smart to Memphis in Three-Team Deal

Kristaps Porzingis is once again on the move, becoming the newest member of the Boston Celtics. The addition of Porzingis is part of a three-team trade bringing Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies and Tyus Jones to the Washington Wizards.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal includes the first-round pick in the draft from Memphis to Boston and the Golden State Warriors first-round pick in 2024. That pick is top-five protected. Also moving are Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala from Boston to Washington.

The deal comes after a previous one set that would send Malcolm Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers fell through.

The Wizards brought in Chris Paul and Landry Shamet days before after sending out Bradley Beal.

On June 22, it was revealed that the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards were working on a deal to send center Kristaps Porziņģis to Boston. It was the second major trade of the offseason, and also the second featuring the Wizards. On June 18, they sent Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, and a package of picks. Porziņģis has been a key contributor for the Wizards. Joining the team via a trade in 2022, Porziņģis had a career-high 23.2 points per game. Furthermore, he had a career-high shooting percentage of 49.8%. Acquiring Porziņģis would earn the Celtics a definite upgrade at center. Porziņģis is a decade younger than current standing center Al Horford and had a much stronger 2022-23 season.

The Porziņģis trade was meant to be a three-team deal also featuring the LA Clippers. The Wizards would receive Marcus Morris, Amir Coffey, the 30th pick in the 2023 Draft from the Clippers, and Danilo Gallinari from Boston. Meanwhile, Boston would receive Kristaps Porziņģis. Finally, the Clippers would get Malcolm Brogdon from the Celtics. However, around 90 minutes after the news was broken, the deal had reportedly fallen apart. With the Clippers pulling out, the Wizards and Celtics were left scrambling to complete the deal before the deadline on Porziņģis’ player option passed.

Grizzlies Join Porziņģis Deal

Per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Porziņģis deal was saved by the intervention of the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies, who have been linked with trades elsewhere, took the place of the Clippers in the deal. The Celtics receive Porziņģis, Memphis’ 2023 first-round draft pick, and Golden State’s 2024 top-four protected first-round draft pick. Meanwhile, Washington receives Tyus Jones from the Grizzlies, and Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and a 2023 second-round pick from Boston. Finally, Memphis receives Marcus Smart from the Celtics.

It’s a complicated trade with a lot of moving parts. However, Boston gets a new franchise center and two first-round picks to play with. The Grizzlies get a workhorse veteran who could also help with their locker room atmosphere. While they have retained the star tandem of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics are eager to put together a roster to find them a championship.

Meanwhile, the Washington Wizards are at the other end of the contention spectrum. In recent days, they decided to finally trigger a full rebuild, trading Bradley Beal to the Suns. However, the return package was definitely less than expected, only netting them Chris Paul, Landrey Shamet, and some second-round picks. Perhaps because of this, recent reports suggest the Wizards aren’t done dealing.

Celtics Want Sign-And-Trade For Porziņģis

Per Shams Charania, the Boston Celtics are in talks with the Washington Wizards to acquire center and former fourth-overall pick Kristaps Porziņģis. Porziņģis is a Lativan star drafted in 2015 after beginning his pro career with Sevilla. He has been a key contributor for the Wizards. Joining the team via a trade in 2022, Porziņģis had a career-high 23.2 points per game. Furthermore, he had a career-high shooting percentage of 49.8%. 2023-24 represents a player option year for Porziņģis, who stands to make $36 million if he opts in. Bradley Beal Trade Roasted By NBA Twitter

Bradley Beal and the Washington Wizards weren’t exactly a match that was working out. Although Beal was able to secure the bag from the Wizards, the team was never able to surround him with solid assets. Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma are not going to help you contend for a championship. Furthermore, they couldn’t even get this team to contend for a playoff spot. Overall, it became clear that Beal was not going to be with the team for long. After all, when you’re scoring over 25 points per game, it’s difficult to want to stay with a team that is going nowhere.

Throughout the past couple of days, there had been rumblings that Bradley Beal would be traded to either the Phoenix Suns or the Miami Heat. In the end, however, it was the Suns who came out on top. They ended up trading Chris Paul and some other minor pieces to get him, which for a guy like Beal, is a pretty small price. In fact, the Wizards couldn’t even get a first-round pick, which is a huge indictment of the Washington front office.

In exchange for Beal, the Suns are expected to send Chris Paul, Landry Shermet, a number of second-round picks, and some additional pick swaps to Washington. Reportedly, Miami had offered Kyle Lowry, Duncan Robinson, and “multiple first-round picks” in exchange for Beal.

Speaking to ESPN, Beal’s agent Mark Bartelstein opened up about the process that lead to the trade. “This was an extremely complicated process with so many different hurdles to get through, and Ted Leonsis and Michael Winger were unbelievable partners in making this happen.” The deal is expected to be finalized and officially announced later this week. Miami’s deal reportedly pairs Kyle Lowery and Duncan Robinson with “multiple first-round picks.” Between now and 2030, the Heat currently own all but two of their first-round picks. The Thunder have the right to swap first-round picks with the Heat in 2025, as long as the Heat do not pick within the top-14. If they do, the Thunder retain the right to swap picks in 2026.

Meanwhile, the Suns’ package centers around star center DeAndre Ayton. The deal would additionally include “additional cap filler or future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul and Landry Shamet.” However, The Athletic report makes no mention of the Suns including picks in the deal.
