Washington Commanders Searching For New Stadium Sponsor

FedEx has canceled its naming rights deal with the Washington Commanders two years before the deal expired. Not only does that mean the Commanders miss out on $15 million of expected revenue, but it comes a day after the Commanders announced a $75-million stadium renovation plan. The move caught the team by surprise, according to sources who spoke with ESPN. However, these sources noted that the team had begun the process of finding a new sponsor in the past months.

Furthermore, the new ownership group of the Commanders has also been considering a brand-new stadium for the team. While they can extend their agreement with Prince George’s County past 2027, the team is also considering opening a new stadium in 2030. Sites in Virginia, DC, and Maryland are all being considered. “We have already started the process of identifying our next stadium naming rights partner – a partner who will play a crucial role in ushering in the next era of not only Commanders football, but also a robust slate of top live events and concerts,” a statement from the team read.

Washington Commanders Sale Could Trigger Another Name Change

However, is the stadium name the only thing going to change? The Commanders could not be the Commanders for much longer. “I would not be surprised at all if we see a name change and a complete rebranding,” ESPN‘s Don Van Natta Jr. said on The Rich Eisen Show. While it would be the team’s fourth name since 2019, a complete rebrand to really mark the start of a new era for the team. This may already be more than a rumor, as sharp-eyed social media users noted that an alumni gifting included swag that appeared to omit the Commanders moniker. Online, fans appeared split over the possibility of a new name. While some embraced the idea of removing the overly-generic “Commanders” name, others were more focused on achieving on-field results instead.

If the team were to change their name, it would need to be something bold and memorable. For example, George Washington University recently announced they would be changing their athletic nickname from the Colonials to the Revolutionaries. While thematically appropriate, it was chosen in place of the much cooler “Blue Fog”. Personally, the team should forgo the tradition of choosing something fierce or militaristic and instead choose something that embodies the city, like Harris’ other teams. If they wanted to go really out there with the name, how about the Washington/DC Half-Smokes? What do you think? Should Washington change their name? And if so, what should they change it to? Let us know in the comments.

Five NFL Players Suspended For Betting Offenses

The NFL has always had a somewhat awkward relationship with sports betting. As more and more states have legalized the practice, the NFL has cautiously opened itself up to the lucrative industry. In 2021, the league announced agreements with four sportsbook operators. However, the NFL has been careful not to officially endorse any one operator through an official partnership. Sports betting revenue hit $7.5 billion in 2022.

However, an area where the NFL has held firm is betting on the part of its players. Like most professional sports leagues in the US, the NFL forbids players from betting in any capacity. The most notable casualty of this is Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who was suspended for the 2022 season for betting on games during the 2021 season. That suspension led to Ridley’s release from the Falcons, as well as criticisms that the NFL was harsher on gambling than issues such as sexual assault.

Four Lions, One Commander Handed Suspensions

On April 21, the NFL officially suspended five players for betting-related offenses. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, both of the Lions, and defensive end Shaka Toney of the Commanders received indefinite suspensions for betting on NFL games. Wide receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill, also both of the Lions, were suspended for six games each for placing bets not related to the NFL. The Lions have since reported that Cephus and Moore have been released from the team. Toney remains on the Commanders at the time of writing.

Williams is the biggest name of the five who were suspended. The twelfth overall pick in the 2022 Draft, Williams spent most of the season rehabbing from an ACL tear sustained in the 2022 College National Championship game. However, he was expected to be a major part of the Lions’ offense this season. Of the other Lions suspended, Cephus was a 2020 fifth-rounder who has played in 22 games over the last three seasons. Moore went undrafted in 2019 but has made 48 tackles in 56 games for the Lions. Berryhill went undrafted in 2022 and made four appearances for the team last year. Shaka Toney was a 2021 seventh-rounder who appeared in 26 games for the Commanders.

Washington Commanders Officially Sold

The Washington Commanders have been officially sold by Dan Snyder. The deal was made official on Thursday. The agreement was made official on Thursday, with Commanders fans rejoicing. The deal is reportedly for $6 billion, with the new ownership group consisting of the co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and Magic Johnson. The sale has been a long time coming for Commanders fans. Snyder has been the focal point of numerous scandals throughout the years. Now the painful nightmare is over for the Commanders faithful.

It has been no secret that the Commanders have not been one of the most well-run organizations in sports. During the season, videos were shared showing the stadium basically falling apart. However, it seemed to fans that ownership didn’t care about their experience at the stadium. Ownership had no reason to care as long as tickets were still being sold. Finally, it felt like the frustration of the city had reached a fever pitch. Snyder’s days as the owner of the Commanders were numbered. Finally, a fan base drenched in misery can celebrate something positive happening.

Washington Commanders Find New Ownership

Six billion dollars is a hefty price. However, the value of NFL franchises will only go up with the dominating success of the sport. The NFL has become the most popular sport in the United States. The league continues to see betting wars to have their games on certain networks. Recently, YouTube paid a steep price for the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. A subscription service that had long found DirecTV as its home. Now Sunday Ticket and the league will embark on a new venture with a popular streaming service.

NFL ownership is a billionaire’s playground. However, Dan Snyder seemingly ran a once great franchise in the Washington Commanders straight to the dirt. But brighter days seem to be ahead for the organization and its fans. The Commanders finished in last place of a stacked NFC East last season. However, the change in ownership could begin a positive trajectory for the franchise. For the latest news regarding all things NFL, keep it right here with HNHH.

Jeff Bezos Won’t Join Commaders Bidding War

There has been much speculation over the next owners of the Washington Commanders. After long-time owner Dan Synder officially put the team up for sale, a number of parties have expressed their interest. Official bids have been submitted by Sixers owner Josh Harris, whose ownership group includes Magic Johnson, as well as Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos. Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta has also submitted a $5.6 billion bid, which would be lower than the reported $6 billion offered by other groups.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has long been linked to the sale of the Commanders. The third-richest man in the world has long resided in Washington and owns the legacy newspaper, The Washington Post. He has long been considered a potential bidder. However, drama emerged last month when sources claimed the Synders had blocked Bezos from bidding. The Synders have denied this claim. It is known that a third, anonymous group toured the Commanders’ facilities along with Harris and Apostolopoulos. But whether that was Bezos, or another ownership group, is unknown.

Bezos Out According To Sources

First reported by Teddy Schleifer at Puck, Bezos is officially out of the running for the Commanders ownership. Bezos had been seriously considering making an offer, going as far as to hire Allen & Co. to explore the feasibility of making a bid. At one point in the proceedings, Jay-Z was reportedly part of Bezos’ group. Despite the heavy circulation of the rumor, that was later proven false. However, according to Schleifer’s sources, Bezos will not be submitting a formal bid. A reason for why Bezos is pulling out was not given.

That leaves the bids by Harris and Apostolopoulos as the two front-runners. Both bids are said to be of equal value, meaning it will be down to the Synders to decide the organization’s future. It is unlikely that the sale of the team will occur before the 2023 NFL season. Furthermore, the sale will likely be delayed until the 2024 off-season to minimize the impact on the team. The sale will end a tumultuous ownership saga for Synder, who has consistently drawn negative headlines during his tenure. Most recently, Synder faced the wrath of his fellow NFL owners after it was revealed he had been cooking the Commanders books to withhold money from the NFL’s revenue-sharing scheme. On the field, the Commanders are looking to rebuild after failing to post a winning record for the sixth consecutive season in 2022.

Magic Johnson Reacts To Recent Commanders Bid

Magic Johnson is someone with incredible business acumen. Overall, this is especially true when it comes to the world of sports ownership. Johnson is part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and even Los Angeles FC in the MLS. However, there is one sport he is still trying to get into, and that’s football. The NFL is one of the best organizations in the world, and everyone would love to own one of its 32 teams. Unfortunately, teams only come up for sale every few years.

Although, the Washington Commanders are currently being sold by Dan Snyder. Snyder is not very well-liked in NFL circles, and with potential scandals on the horizon, he is looking to get out of dodge. This has subsequently led to a bidding war for the team. Everyone wants to get in on this, including Magic Johnson. As we reported recently, he was part of a group that just bid $6 billion on the team. They do have competition, however, as a Canadian billionaire put in a very similar offer.

Magic Johnson Remains Hopeful

While appearing on The Today Show, Magic Johnson was asked about his recent bid and how he feels about it all. Of course, Johnson is very excited about the prospect of owning the Commanders. However, he is very attuned to the fact that it is beyond his control. Although, he did note that he is hopeful that Dan Snyder will choose his ownership group. After all, it’s better for a team to be in the hands of many than just one person. Snyder has certainly taught us a lesson in that.

If Johnson does become part-owner of the team, then it will be a historic moment. Across sports, there are very few black owners. While he would have a minority stake, his participation is still extremely significant. Hopefully, Snyder makes the right decision and brings the legend on board. Let us know what you think about the sale of the Commanders, in the comments below. Additionally, stay tuned to HNHH for more news from the sports world. We will always keep you informed.

Magic Johnson Part Of Group Seeking To Buy Commanders For Record-Breaking Price

Magic Johnson is someone with incredible business acumen. Overall, he has made a whole lot of money throughout his career. However, most of it has come off of the court. In fact, Johnson was able to purchase a stake in the Los Angeles Dodgers a few years ago. When he did that, Johnson made it very clear that he is interested in sports ownership opportunities. Subsequently, there have been all sorts of rumblings about him potentially wanting to own a bit of an NFL team.

Last year, there was a solid opportunity with the Denver Broncos. However, Magic Johnson missed the boat as another group ended up with the team. At the time, the team sold for a whopping $4.65 billion which was an NFL record. Now, the Washington Commanders are for sale as Dan Snyder is jumping ship. There is a ton of interest in this team, and according to TMZ he has joined a massive group that is looking to buy the team. The group includes Sixers owner Josh Harris, as well as Mitchell Rales who is a billionaire. As it turns out, the group just put in a $6 billion bid for the Commanders.

Magic Johnson To The NFL?

This would be the largest sale in the history of the National Football League. However, Johnson, Harris, and Rales will all have some competition. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, a Canadian billionaire by the name of Steve Apostolopoulos also put in a $6 billion bid. No matter what, it looks like Snyder is in for a massive payday. Whether or not it is deserved, is up to the Commanders fans to decide.

It would be amazing to have Johnson in the NFL as an owner. However, it will ultimately be up to Snyder as to which group he wants to go with. Owning an NFL franchise comes with a ton of responsibility, and it will simply come down to which side has more money, resources, and time. Stay tuned to HNHH for more news from the sports world.

Carson Wentz Released By Commanders, Twitter Reacts

Carson Wentz had a phenomenal season back in 2017. Overall, he was an MVP-caliber player who showcased he could lead the Philadelphia Eagles to victory. However, he eventually got injured and it was Nick Foles who won the Super Bowl that year. Since that time, Wentz has been on the decline. He cannot seem to get a steady job in the league, and fans are worried about his future. His time in Indianapolis was not good at all, and he wasn’t much better in Washington.

Subsequently, with Eric Bieniemy coming in as the Offensive Coordinator, there were various questions as to whether or not Wentz would have a future in Washington. After all, most coaches like to bring in their own guys. Furthermore, Bieniemy is used to someone like Patrick Mahomes, and Wentz isn’t exactly there in terms of skill. That said, the Commanders did, in fact, decide to make a difficult decision as it pertains to Wentz. According to Adam Schefter, he was officially released by the Commanders, making him a free agent.

Carson Wentz Gets Bad News

Now, Wentz will be able to go wherever he is welcomed. However, his future is not exactly set in stone. There are very few teams out there who would probably want to take him on as a starter. Overall, he has not shown starter potential over these past few seasons. He would definitely make for a great backup, however, there is no telling whether or not he actually wants that for himself. At the end of the day, it is an embarrassing fall from grace for a player who many thought could be the next great quarterback in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes Sets The Record Straight On Eric Bieniemy

Patrick Mahomes is currently on top of the world right now. Overall, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for the second time in four seasons. Consequently, Mahomes is being looked at on the same level as legendary quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Joe Montana. He still has a lot of work to do before he gets to Tom Brady, however, he is most definitely on the right track. Heading into next year, the Chiefs are the favorites, and with Mahomes at the helm, it is impossible to deny their strength.

Although, the Chiefs will now have to go into next season with a new Offensive Coordinator. Eric Bieniemy has been passed up for numerous head coaching jobs, and some believe it is because of Andy Reid. As a result, Bieniemy decided to leave the Chiefs to pursue the Offensive Coordinator role in Washington. Subsequently, Bieniemy got to face the media yesterday, where he was asked all sorts of questions. For instance, he was asked about LeSean McCoy who had some bad things to say about the OC.

Patrick Mahomes Speaks

Bieniemy handled the question with class and showcased how he plans to take the high road on these matters. Patrick Mahomes was impressed with Bieniemy’s response and took to Twitter to demonstrate just how great his former OC truly is. “There should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bienemy is,” Mahomes wrote. “His leadership has a direct impact on the player/person i am today! 10+ years learning under one of the greatest coaches of all time.. and i cannot wait for him to continue to prove doubters wrong!” With Mahomes giving Bieniemy the stamp of approval, it is clear that McCoy is just salty.

Now, Bieniemy will get to prove himself with an offensive core that definitely needs work. There is no telling what the Commanders can accomplish next season. However, the NFC East is wide open and there for the taking. If he can elevate those players to just a fraction of what the Chiefs are, then we are looking at something special. Stay tuned to HNHH for more news and updates from around the sports world.

Stephen A. Has Words For Snyder

“As it pertains to Daniel Snyder, I don’t know him very well,” Smith said. “I’ve met him on several occasions, I’ve always been fond of talking with him. This is really bad and there is no question he should no longer be an owner of a National Football League team. He has to go.

“The Washington Football Team has won three playoff games in 30 years. The last time they won a playoff game was in 2005. They’ve only been to the playoffs three times since 2005. It has been an embarrassment.”
