Police in the Dominican Republic have arrested disgraced Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco today (November 11) after an altercation that involved firearms being drawn.

A report from ESPN confirmed that authorities in the DR were questioning the 23-year-old baseball player and an unnamed woman in the parking lot of an apartment complex about a altercation the day prior “in which guns were drawn”. Meregirdo Espinosa, A DR police spokesperson, said one of the guns presumably belonged to Franco, who was allegedly fighting with another man over the woman’s attention.

MLB placed Franco on indefinite administrative leave in August 2023 following an arrest connected to the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl. According to his bail agreement, Franco is not allowed to leave the Dominican Republic but is free to travel within the country as he awaits trial in December. Franco faces up to 20 years in prison for charges of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking.

Franco, who signed an 11-year, $182m contract extension with the Rays in November 2021, was just 70 games into his major league career and selected for the All-Star Game when he was arrested for the sexual abuse allegations. He boasted a .282 BA with 30 HRs, 130 RBIs and 40 swiped bags in 265 games in just two seasons. He was placed on Major League baseball’s restricted list back in July. He is also under an MLB investigation under its domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy until the case is resolved.

Authorities in the Dominican Republic officially charged Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco yesterday(July 9) with sexual and psychological abuse of a 14-year-old girl.

Prosecutors decided to press charges four days after the initial July 5th deadline expired, six months after a judge ordered that Franco be investigated in connection with sexual abuse of a minor.

Attorney General Office spokesperson Nairobi Viloria confirmed that prosecutors confirmed presented the final accusations to a judge, but she did not provide any further details about the charges. Prosecutors allege that the minor’s mother, who is currently on house arrest, was paid thousands of dollars to consent to the relationship, which lasted four months.

The 23-year-old is currently on administrative leave from Major League Baseball until July 14.

Franco’s lawyer Jay Reisinger said he could not comment because Franco had not received formal notification of any charges. Tampa Bay’s All-Star shortstop has not played since Aug. 12 while MLB continues its investigation into the charges.

Several reports have confirmed that All-Star shortstop Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave until further notice due to allegations of the 22-year-old having a romantic relationship with a minor.

In an agreement between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, Franco and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to his placement on the restricted list on August 14, which was extended on Monday while police in the Dominican Republic are investigating social media posts that suggest that the Rays star was involved with someone that was underage.

Today(August 22), MLB issued a statement per Franco’s situation, stating, “Per an agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, Wander Franco has been placed on Administrative Leave until further notice as MLB continues its ongoing investigation. The administrative leave, effective immediately, is not disciplinary under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. We will comment further at the appropriate time.”

The Rays put out their own statement following the MLB statement, which said, “We support Major League Baseball’s decision to place Wander Franco on administrative leave. The Tampa Bay Rays are dedicated to upholding high standards of integrity both on and off the field. We appreciate the understanding and patience of our fans and supporters as this process unfolds. We will have no further statements on this matter until MLB completes its process.”

Under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy collectively bargained by MLB and the MLBPA, players on administrative leave continue to receive their salary and Major League service time. The club continued to pay Franco his $2 million salary while he was on the restricted list the past week, part of the 11-year, $182 million guaranteed extension he signed following the 2021 season.

Franco totally denied the allegations in an IG Live video made in the Rays’ clubhouse before their August 13 game at Tropicana Field, but the last game Franco played was on August 12. He has not spoken publicly on the matter since then. He has reportedly hired an attorney in the United States and in the Dominican Republic.
