Rising global star Tyla adds to her stellar breakout season by releasing the deluxe edition of her debut album, TYLA, now titled TYLA +. The refreshed album features three new tracks and guest appearances from rising South African artists Tony Duardo, Optimist, and Maestro, further solidifying Tyla’s mission to amplify Amapiano on the global stage.

The deluxe edition opens with “Shake Ah,” where DJ/producer Tony Duardo and singers Optimist and Maestro join Tyla. The album continues with “Push 2 Start” and “Back To You,” where Tyla blends R&B and pop into her Amapiano sound, a fusion she discussed in Elle magazine. “I always wanted to mix Amapiano with styles like R&B and pop—and make it my own,” she shared.

Following the success of her chart-topping hit “Water,” Tyla became the highest-charting African female soloist on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200. With TYLA +, she continues to expand her global reach.

Tyla Adds Three New Songs To Her Self-Titled Debut Album, Including The Yearning ‘Push 2 Start’

Seven months from the release of her breakout self-titled debut album, Tyla has delivered on her promise of an expanded deluxe edition with three new songs to extend the Afrobeats party offered on the original.

The one currently drawing the most attention is the yearning “Push 2 Start,” which you can play above. With production from Ari PenSmith, Mocha Bands, Rayo, and Sammy Soso, the songs finds the South African siren imploring the object of her affection to “tell me where we goin’, pick a destination / Gas me up, give me motivation.”

Meanwhile, on “Back To You,” Tyla relaxes into a laid-back R&B vibe, promising a lover, “But every time, I’ll always come back to you / No matter where you go, no matter what you do.” You can check it out below.

Finally, “Shake Ah” returns to the native Amapiano sounds the Johannesburg native grew up on, with appearances from fellow SA performers Ez Maestro, Optimist Music ZA, and Tony Duardo, who join her in reciting the lyrics in Zulu, one of the 12 official languages of South Africa out of the thirty-five languages spoken in the country. Tyla is, of course, of partial Zulu ancestry, along with Indian, Irish, and Mauritian descent.

Tyla had a major hit last summer with “Water,” and her self-titled debut album did well, too, peaking in the top 25 on the Billboard 200 chart. (Uproxx also named it one of the best albums of 2024’s first half.) Tyla dropped back in March, but she’s not done with the project yet: Today (October 7), she announced a deluxe edition of the album.

New to the tracklist are “Shake Ah” featuring Tony Duardo, Optimist, and Maestro, as well as “Push 2 Start” and “Back To You.” Aside from that, it also features new album artwork.

Meanwhile, Tyla has kept busy since dropping the album: She performed a body-paint-enhanced rendition of “Jump” at the BET Awards and teamed up with Spinall and Omah for “One Call.”

Joe Budden Receives Barrage Of Backlash For Take On Tyla & Her Behavior At The VMAs

One of the most controversial talking heads in all of hip-hop is back at it again. Over the weekend, Joe Budden and the crew got to discussing the MTV VMAs that went down last Wednesday. The main focus during that portion of the podcast had to do with Tyla. Overall, there are some that feel she was acting snobby and standoffish throughout the entire program. For example, some were critiquing her for the way she was asking Lil Nas X and Halle Bailey to help her hold her award onstage.

This led to Armon Wiggins, a pretty big multi-media personality, to call out Tyla on social media. “Hey, I don’t think I like TYLA’s personality. I think someone needs to check her ’cause she doesn’t understand American culture AT ALL. She almost gives off entitled or uppity African vibes. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s very off-putting, and it’s almost like she expects people to just fall at her feet”.

Joe Budden Felt Tyla Curved USHER In A Stuck-Up Manner

This quote sparked debate on Joe Budden’s show as he was in complete agreement, according to IOL. Apparently, he’s been feeling this way about the “Water” hitmaker, citing an incident at one of USHER’s past shows being the catalyst. In the resurfaced clip above, USHER appears to try and get Tyla to dance on him, but she subtly dodges that advance of assumed showmanship. Joe felt she should have done it out of respect because the R&B legend was trying to show her love by doing this all while dancing to “Water”. However, his panel of co-hosts was in total disagreement, mentioning that she’s in a relationship and didn’t want to disrespect her man. That really set him off, but also the rest of the internet as they were in complete disagreement. You can see those reactions above and below.

More Reactions

What are your thoughts on Joe Budden unleashing on Tyla for her how she “dubbed” USHER at the VMAs? Do you agree that his take was too ridiculous, why or why not? Will Tyla or USHER have anything to say? We would like to hear what you have to say, so leave your thoughts in the comments. Additionally, always keep it locked in with HNHH for all of the latest news surrounding Joe Budden, Tyla, and USHER. Finally, stay with us for everything else going on in the music world.

Tyla Shut Down An Online Controversy Over Her VMAs Request With An Astute Observation

These days, it seems like folks on the internet can turn just about anything into a controversy. Case in point: During Tyla’s acceptance speech at last night’s MTV VMAs, she made a simple, relatable request that commenters on Twitter (never calling it “X”) twisted into a case of… bullying(?) one of the two presenters, fellow singer Halle Bailey. While being presented the moon person for Best Afrobeats, she expressed surprise at the weight of the statuette, joking, “I’m not strong enough!”

Offering the moon person to Lil Nas X, who was presenting alongside Halle, Tyla asked, “Can you hold it for me?” Twitter promptly lit up with accusations that she wanted Halle to hold it for her (although Nas was the one who ended up taking it). “Halle said baby I am NOT the help,” wrote one commentewrote one commenter Hold your own award boo. Tyla tried it.” Another added, “Halle tried handing her the cards & she brushed her off but expected her to hold her award.”

Tyla herself, though, wasn’t having any of it, shutting down such speculation with an astute observation: “Y’all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls.” She also offered those detractors some friendly advice: “STFU I WON A VMAAAA.”

Ever since her single “Water” became a ubiquitous hit, Tyla has become something of a lightning rod for manufactured controversy. In a recent interview with the Breakfast Club, she was asked a question about her coloured identity — which she had specifically asked them not to do — and before that, she was criticized for taking a photo with Representative Nancy Pelosi by fans who disagreed with Pelosi’s policies (if they even know what those polices are).

For all these folks, here’s some more advice, free of charge: Seek therapy.

Tyla Drops Captivating "Breathe Me" Music Video

GRAMMY-winning global superstar Tyla has released the highly anticipated music video for “Breathe Me,” the latest single from her record-setting debut album, TYLA. Directed by Nabil, the “Breathe Me” video is the fourth visual release from her self-titled LP, following the success of “Water,” “Art,” and “Truth or Dare.”

The video picks up right where “Truth or Dare” left off, transporting viewers to a serene and romantic setting in Osaka, Japan. Here, Tyla and her love interest embark on an adventurous date night, disconnecting from their phones and immersing themselves in the moment’s magic—an almost dream-like escape from reality.

“Breathe Me” is the newest addition to Tyla’s impressive music video lineup that has taken the world by storm. Her previous videos, including “Art” and “Jump,” have collectively garnered 75 million YouTube views, further solidifying her status as a rising star. Her hit single “Water” is also up for ‘Best R&B Video’ at this year’s MTV VMAs.

Tyla’s meteoric rise has been marked by a string of achievements, including her debut on the Billboard 200, where she became the highest-charting African female soloist in the chart’s history. Omah Lay & Tyla Are Only “One Call” Away On SPINALL-Produced Single

SPINALL, aka DJ Spinall, is here with “One Call” featuring Tyla and Omah Lay, a single that figures to dominate late-night summer bashes. This is an all-African collaboration, between the Nigerian producer and fellow singer, as well as the “pretty girl from Joburg” (Johannesburg, South Africa). All three respective artists have done a lot for their culture, putting out some of the biggest Afrobeats/Afro-fusion records as of late. While Omah Lay did make some not-so-great headlines for contributing to a break-up at one of his concerts, his feature game has been top-tier. Just ask the likes of Kehlani, Luciano, and Libianca how much he has helped with their streaming numbers. As for Tyla, her self-titled debut has been doing extremely well since its release this past March.

Songs like “Jump”, “Water”, “Truth or Dare”, and “ART”, continue to rake in millions of streams. Finally, SPINALL has been riding off the success of his 2023 record TOP BOY. Hopefully, with singles like “One Call”, “Psalm 23”, and “Loju”, we get a new record before the end of the summer. As we said, this latest song is perfect for this time of year. The danceable rhythm is quite undeniable from the start and its lowkey vibe make it that perfect song to snuggle up to with your boo. You can stream “One Call” with the lyric video provided below.

Tyla Teams Up With Spinall And Omah Lay For The Mellow ‘One Call’

Three of African music’s hottest rising stars team up on “One Call,” the new single from Nigerian producer/DJ Spinall (pronounced spin-all), featuring Nigerian singer Omah Lay and South African breakout Tyla. Featuring a mellow and hypnotic Afrobeats instrumental, the song finds Omah and Tyla lyrically pining for a potential fling, telling them that they’ll only be “one call” away. With its reassuring chorus and cool blend of African sounds, it’s a slick party starter for a laid-back summer vibe.

“One Call” continues Tyla’s US takeover, which began last year with the arrival of her inescapable bop, “Water,” and rolled right into 2024 with the release of her self-titled debut album. In the months since, Tyla graced the Met Gala, signed on for special shows at Lollapalooza, and released her inner tiger at the 2024 BET Awards. And although she had to cancel her upcoming tour for medical reasons, moments like her Gap campaign with new song “Linen Moves,” Becky G collaboration “On My Body,” “Jump” video with Gunna and Skillibeng, and now, “One Call,” will likely keep her in the spotlight and building momentum until she recovers.

Meanwhile, Omah Lay continues to payoff the prediction made by Uproxx’s Wongo Okon in 2022, contributing to Afrobeats’ expansion in the US public eye.

Tyla Embraced Her Inner Lioness (NSFW Body Paint And All) At The 2024 BET Awards With A Performance Of ‘Jump’

Tyla’s self-titled debut album has received raved reviews, from fans and Uproxx alike. Unfortunately, supporters weren’t album to enjoy any of the songs from the project after she was forced to cancel her supporting tour.

But tonight (June 30), supporters from around the world were able to witness what could’ve been. Alongside her collaborators, Gunna and Skillibeng, Tyla performed her single, “Jump.” To pay homage to her South African heritage (as shown in the track’s official video), the set was filled with nods to the motherland.

There was no water to be found, but there was plenty of nature element. Surrounded by a mock safari display, Tyla’s background dancers even assumed the role of lioness trapped in a cage with NSFW body art. But even the box couldn’t hold Tyla’s slithery dance moves.

Tyla found viral success thanks to her liquid and booty jump combination seen in the official video for “Water.” But she has much more than one-legged twerking in her choreography bag. She can wine, twerk, but most importantly sing live. As the budding amapiano pop crossover princess, Tyla’s vocal ability can’t be ignored. Earlier in the evening, Tyla took home the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act, so it certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
